4. DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY
4.1 Principles of method
The magnetic particle examination method may be applied to detect cracks and other
discontinuities on/or near the surfaces of ferromagnetic materials.
Typical types of discontinuities that can be detected by this method are cracks, laps, seams, cold
shuts and laminations.
2
This method involves magnetising the area to be examined, and applying ferromagnetic particles
(the examination medium) to the surface. The particles will form patterns on the surface where Page |
cracks and other discontinuities cause distortions in the normal magnetic field. These patterns are 6
usually characteristic of the type of discontinuity that is detected.
Whichever technique is used to produce the magnetic flux in the part, maximum sensitivity will
be to linear discontinuities, oriented perpendicular to the lines of flux. For optimum effectiveness
in detecting all types of discontinuities, each area should be examined at least twice, with the lines
of flux during one examination approximately perpendicular to the lines of flux during the other.
The best results are obtained when the magnetic field is perpendicular to the length of existing
indications joints between metals of dissimilar magnetic characteristics create magnetic
discontinuities that may produce indications.
A dr. Berthold field indicator or magnetic flux indicator shall be used to verify the adequacy of
the magnetising field.
4.2 Time and extent of examination
The project Typical Inspection Plan shall be followed.
Examination shall be performed as welded
Examination shall be performed on areas where local repair excavations have been made.
Examination shall be performed where local arc strikes on material surface have been ground off.

4.4 Application
4.4.1 Surface preparation
a) Satisfactory results are normally obtained in the finished conditions.
Surface preparation by grinding is necessary when surface irregularities might mask the
indications of unacceptable discontinuities, or otherwise interfere with the effectiveness of
the examination.
Rough surfaces might decrease the sensitivity and tend to distort the magnetic field. In this
case light grinding may be used to smooth rough surfaces.
b) Prior to magnetic particle examination, the surface to be examined shall be dry and free
of all dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding flux and spatter, oil, or other extraneous matter that
could interfere with the examination.
c) Cleaning if necessary, shall be performed with a wire brush, or by grinding.
4.4.2 Magnetisation
a) An AC electromagnetic yoke shall be used the capacity of the yoke to lift ten pound
weight shall have been demonstrated in the last six months. The ten pound weight used for
the lift test shall show evidence of certification in the past three years.
b) The field shall be applied for a minimum of 4 seconds to allow for effective particle
migration. Magnetic particle sprinkling will be carried out during magnetisation. A
supplementary impulsion should be realised after sprinkling is complete in order to fix the
magnetic spectrum of discontinuities as revealed.
c) Direction of magnetisation : see fig.1
At least two separate examinations shall be performed on each area. During the second
examination, the magnetic lines of force shall be approximately perpendicular to those
used during the first examination.
d) Examination coverage :
All examination shall be conducted with sufficient overlap to assure 100% coverage at the
required sensitivity.
e) The field strength of the yoke shall be determined in accordance with paragraph 5.9 of
this procedure.

Max '
A/2
4.4.3 Examination medium
a) wet magnetic particles :
Particles shall be suspended in a suitable liquid medium, generally in a low viscosity oil or
conditioned water.
The recommended settling particle volume is from 1,2 to 2,4 ml per 100 ml of liquid medium
unless otherwise specified by the particle manufacturer. Continuous agitation of the
solution is necessary to prevent the indicating particles from settling out.
The temperature of the wet particle suspension and the surface of the part shall not exceed 57°
C.
If the suspension medium is mixed at site it must be checked each morning for quantity of
particles in suspension by means of a Sutherland flack or similar.
b) A white background spray on the examination area shall be applied before examination,
for contrast.
.
4.4.4 Evaluation of Indications
Indications will be revealed by retention of magnetic particles. All such indications are not
necessarily imperfections, however, since excessive surface roughness, magnetic permeability variations
(such as the edge of heat affected zones) etc..., may produce similar indications
An indication is the evidence of a mechanical imperfection. Only indications which have any
dimension greater than 1.59 mm shall be considered relevant.
A linear indication is one having a length greater than three times the width.

times its width.
Equipment Products
Other equivalent equipment and/or products may be used, providing product certification and client
approval has been given.
4.8 Calibration of inspection equipment
The magnetising force of yokes shall be verified at least once a year, or immediately after a yoke has been
damaged.
If a yoke has not been in use for a year or more, a check shall be made immediately prior to its first
use.
The magnetisation force of the yokes will be verified before each shift by means of a suitable field
indicator, and a daily record endorsed by the NDE-operator.
Each alternating current electromagnetic yoke shall have a lifting power of at least 4,5 Kg at the
maximum pole spacing to be used.
