Learning a musical instrument is quite interesting. One can improve skills within a short amount of time while
others can struggle even mastering the basic skills. You may wonder, what creates such difference? What is the
importance of talent in learning music? According to recent studies, kids who have parents or grandparents with
musical background tend to be more fast-learners when it comes to musical subjects. However, talent doesn’t
determine your fullest potential solely. In fact, what determines your success in music mostly is your work ethic
and discipline. Talent is only a starting point. It is probably genetic but is highly affected by environmental
factors. It can show up in totally random moments, especially in early childhood.
How to know if you have a special talent for music? It has its own methods to be proven, of course. Talent tests
can be taken at any age. However, taking these tests at an early age makes more sense. We know every kid is
special and talented in their unique ways but musical talent is a bit more complex than it seems to be and it is
wiser to ask
help from professionals specialized in such topic. Musical talent by itself is not enough to achieve stuff. Even
the most talented musician needs to put skills into work and give an effort to make progress. Such blessing
should also be backed up by the right instructors and the right choice of musical instrument.
Question 1. Which of the following best serves the title of the passage?
A. Talent versus Hard Work B. Special Talent for Music
C. Kids and Musical Talent D. Talent Tests Would Help
Question 2. What does the word ‘stuff’ in the second paragraph mostly refer to?

B. Kids who have work ethic and discipline
C. Kids whose talent is not affected by environmental factors
D. Kids who are helped by the right instructors and the right choice of musical instrument
Question 4. The phrase ‘make progress’ in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.
A. begin B. develop C. practise D. carry out
Question 5. We can learn from the passage that ______.
A. work ethic and discipline cannot determine success
B. talent is more important than environmental factors
C. talent cannot be tested
D. we can succeed in music by hard work
Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.
Teenagers love music. They, specifically, attach meaning to and take aspects of their identity from
music. This is not surprising that music holds so much meaning for today’s teens.
Music creates a much needed sense of belonging in the lives of teenagers. Teenagers are known for
feeling isolated from society and friends. Music, as an art form, can help them express the feelings of
frustration that come with feeling isolated. Listening to music can also give teens the chance to feel connected
to musicians and other fans of specific musicians.
Music is a well-known tool for stress relief. Many people actively turn to music as a coping strategy
when processing stress or sadness, because it helps shut out the noise of the world and the noise inside our
heads. Furthermore, music is increasingly being used as a form of therapy, and music therapy has existed for
centuries. Teenagers, especially those going through puberty, conflicts with friends, or the college process, are
under a high amount of stress. Listening to music has been seen to help teens process or release difficult
emotions in a healthy way.
Experiences tend to be very different depending on race or ethnicity. Music provides the opportunity for
teens of all races and ethnicities to share a common bond and learn about each other’s cultures and
backgrounds. For instance, much of the Rap and R&B genres originated in Black culture, and many of the
prominent performers and names in those genres are Black. Music is also usually very personal to the
experience of the artist, so through those things, music can be used as an educational tool for teenagers to learn
about backgrounds differing from theirs.
Music can also provide teenagers with a skill or hobby that is special to them, which can help further
build identity and give teens something to be proud of during a period of life that is often characterized by low
self-confidence. Music is an incredibly powerful tool that can be accessed and appreciated by people of all ages
and backgrounds.

THE STORY OF COCA-COLA
Coca-Cola was invented in 1886 by John Pemberton, a druggist living in Atlanta. The original drink was a type
of syrup, using coca leaves, sugar and cola nuts, plus a few other secret ingredients! Pemberton sold it as a
medicine; and with its coca (the source of cocaine), it must have made people feel good!
Nevertheless, Pemberton’s medicine was not very successful, so he sold his secret formula to another druggist,
Asa Candler. Candler was interested, because he had another idea that Pemberton’s “medicine” would be much
better if it was mixed with soda. Candler was thus the man who really invented the drink Coca-Cola. Candler
also advertised his new drink, and soon people were going to drugstores just to get a drink of Coca-Cola.
Before long, other people became interested in the product, including a couple of businessmen who wanted to
sell it in bottles. Candler sold them a licence to bottle the drink, and very quickly the men became millionaires.
The famous bottle, with its very distinctive shape, was designed in 1916. And the famous Coca-Cola logo is
the most famous logo in the world. Unlike any other famous commercial logos, it has not changed in 100 years!
During the First World War, American soldiers in Europe began asking for Coca-Cola, so the Coca-Cola
company began to export to Europe. It was so popular with soldiers that they then had to start bottling the drink
in Europe.
Today, Coca-Cola is made in countries all over the world, including Russia and China; it is the world’s most
popular drink.
As for the famous formula, it is probably the world’s most valuable secret! The exact ingredients for making
Coca-Cola are only known to a handful of people. And as for the “coca” that was in the original drink, that was
eliminated in 1903. It was a drug, and too dangerous. Today’s Coca-Cola contains caffeine, but not cocaine!

Volunteering, especially when it’s done on a regular basis, can help you make new acquaintances.
Whether you volunteer for an organisation on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, over time you will develop
strong relationships, typically with other volunteers and staff members.
Regular volunteers may get these benefits to a greater degree than people who volunteer infrequently.
Consider this: Handing out water at a fundraising run in April and then helping in an orphanage in November is
surely easier to squeeze into a activities aren’t as likely to help you build relationships over time.
There are benefits and drawbacks to every type of volunteering. For example, volunteering once in a
while is often easy to schedule and is something families or busy schedule than volunteering regularly in an
office. But those more convenient friends can do together. However, volunteers who take part in occasionally
may not feel very connected to the mission of the nonprofits they support or get to know many other volunteers.
Regularly volunteering, on the other hand, makes it more likely that you will develop a deep
relationship to the cause and to other staff and volunteers. However, this kind of volunteering requires a longer-
term and bigger time commitment. It can also become frustrating if the volunteer’s duties aren’t a good fit for
them.
Still, if people are willing to work toward finding the right fit and making time in their schedules,
volunteering on a regular basis can help them get more out of their efforts, including new friends and
acquaintances.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Firstly, the most common reason for not volunteering is lack of free time (about half of Americans cite
this as the main reason), and is that the volunteer schedules and commitments are too inflexible. Therefore, a
possible solution is to make volunteering more accessible and automatic. If working parents are volunteering, it
is most likely at their kids’ schools, which is a location they are already familiar with. Employers could
encourage volunteerism on-site or in a proximate location. Organisations could be more flexible in the way
they use volunteer work, including work that could be done at home, or during evening or weekend hours.
Secondly, another very common reason is that people don’t have information about where to volunteer,
or if they do, the jobs are not meaningful or purposeful. While motivation to volunteer can vary by age, with
younger volunteers more motivated by future preparation (such as increasing skills, knowledge, and advancing
careers) and older volunteers more likely to cite social values as a reason for volunteering, most people are
motivated to volunteer by personal gratification and having a meaningful experience. A solution would be for
organisations who use volunteers to make sure they are matching the skills and experience of their volunteers to
the roles they have available. Making copies and coffee are certainly not meaningful to most. Some
organisations have a short interview process where they discuss the background of the potential volunteer to
closely match it to the needs they have.

From retail goods to food, 3D printing technology promises to change the way we think about everyday
things. It’s difficult to predict what impact it will have on manufacturing but, whatever the exact effects, they
are likely to be deep and long- lasting.
Also known as “additive manufacturing”, 3D printing refers to processes where an object is put together
by layering materials under programmed commands. Objects an be of almost any shape and are produced from
digital model data or other electronic data sources, such as an Additive Manufacturing File.
The invention of 3D printing opens the way for manufacturers to significantly reduce the production
cost of their goods by eliminating many steps in the manufacturing process and the complete production
process, with 3D printing, what would have initially been a series of stages of production could be cut down to
a designer at one end, and the printer or “manufacturer” at the other.
Such reductions in the manufacturing process could affect both regional and international production
networks, possibly resulting in reduced capital requirements, warehousing and other logistics and transportation
needs. This change in production systems could potentially alter the very idea of nations’ economic security. It
could; for instance, destroy countries’ carefully laid development plans for creating employment and
investment in logistics and warehousing, regardless of economic development level. What might happen to
global production networks under such an influential technology?

networks?
A. It could result in reduced international trade.
B. It could lead to a decline in the use of digital model data.
C. It might encourage countries to invest more in logistics and warehousing.
D. It might have negative effects on the existing production networks.
Question 33: What can be inferred about the potential effects of 3D printing on manufacturing?
A. The impacts of 3D printing on manufacturing are uncertain and unserious.
B. 3D printing has the potential to greatly reduce production costs.
C. 3D printing will not affect the traditional stages of production in manufacturing.
D. 3D printing is primarily used for producing digital model data.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
We all suffer from too little sleep from time to time, some more than others. There are many possible
reasons, depending on our age, genes and sleep habits; but another possible culprit is using technology before
going to sleep.
A 2011 survey found nine in ten people use some form of electronics in the hour before bed. This ranges
from playing video games and watching television, to using light-emitting e-readers, tablets and smartphones.
While these devices, especially light-emitting e-readers, seem harmless enough, the light they emit may affect
our sleep patterns and leave us feeling tired the next day. Light exposure can directly influence sleep and the
timing of sleep by acting on our body clock.
One way light exposure may impact sleep and our body clock is by affecting the production of
melatonin during the night. Melatonin is a “sleep” hormone produced in the brain. Melatonin levels begin to
increase around two hours before bed (around 9 p.m. for someone who usually goes to bed around 11 p.m.) to
help to sleep. Exposure to light during the evening hours can inhibit the production of melatonin, so that
melatonin production happens later in the night. Using the example above, melatonin levels may only start to
increase around 10 p.m., which may delay your sleep until around midnight.
The most obvious thing to do is to reduce the use of light-emitting electronic devices prior to bedtime,
or at least within the hour before sleep. For adolescents and adults who are less willing to stop using electronic
devices, there are some applications that can change the amount of blue light that is emitted. It’s probably not a
good idea to rely on these applications too heavily. My advice would be to buy a book or choose an e-reader
that doesn’t emit light. Try to reduce the amount of light you are exposed to in the evenings. Who knows, you
may even find it more relaxing!
