AGRICULTURE 1,2 & 3 definitions

1) Agriculture- man’s management of the environment to


produce food.
2) Irrigation – providing water for agriculture.
3) Kharif crop- crops sown in june and harvested in the
beginning of November.
4) Rabi crop – crops sown by end of October or beginning of
November and harvested by March.
5) Zaid crop- crop grown during march to may with the help
of irrigation,
6) Subsistence farming-farmer produces only for his family,
no surplus for sale
7) Threshing- process of separating the grain from the
spike/stalk.
8) Winnowing – process of separating the grains from the
husk.
9) Milling- the process where the grains are ground into flour.
10)Leguminous plants- plants that fix atmospheric nitrogen
into
soil and increase soil fertility.
11) bolls-cotton pods
12)ginning – process of separating the cotton fibre from the
raw
Material.
13) retting- microbiological process which helps in loosening
the bark
of the jute plant and facilitates the removal of the fibre.
14) oil cake- residue that is left behind after the oilseed is
crushed
and the oil is extracted.
15)sett- sugarcane pieces that is cut along the joints.
16) sett method of cultivation- pieces of sugarcane are cut
along the
joints. Each piece is then planted into furrows and proper
manure
and irrigation is provided. New plants grown from each of
these
setts is called as the sett method of cultivation.
17) Ratooning- the process of cultivating sugarcane where
the first
crop is cut leaving a part of the stem and root intact in
the soil.
Proper fertilizers and irrigation is provided and a new
stem begins
to grow again. This method is called ratoon method of
cultivation.
18) Ratoon crop- every successive crop that is harvested
from the
root and stem that is left intact after the harvest of the
first
sugarcane crop is called as a ratoon crop.
19) transplantation in tea- method where seeds are sown in
germination beds in nurseries and after 9 months the
saplings are
transplanted into the tea gardens.
20) clone planting- a method of propagation of tea where
cuttings
are taken from a good high yielding mother plant and are
planted
in nurseries. After sometime they are transplanted to the
tea
gardens. This process is very popular as the clones have
all the
qualities of the mother plant.
21) Pruning- removal of the central stem of the tea plant to
encourage lateral branching.
22) fine plucking- picking of two leaves and a bud of a tea
plant. The
bud is an unopened leaf.
