1. Introduction
The Internet is a global network of computers linked together over large distances.
It was created by the American Military as a means of communication and has
been in existence since the 1950’s. Up until the mid to late eighties commercial
organizations and educational institutions mainly used the Internet. The rapid
development of technology has seen improvement in communication links and a
lowering of costs. The implication of this is that the Internet is now more widely
available to more people.

The Internet is a valuable source of information for students looking for ideas for
new information and related tasks. There are millions web sites on the net the
chances are any information however obscure can be found. The only tools
required to find this information would be some patience and a decent search
engine. It also serves as a useful tool for lecturers in helping to prepare lesson
plans as there are a number of sites, especially, dedicated to providing educational
material.

It also serves as a forum to promote group discussion, which is time and distance
independent. There are many forms this group discussion can take. These include
video conferencing, where by the use of a small video camera and microphone
members of the group can actually see and hear each other. Also group discussion
can take the form of chat rooms where everyone comes together in a host area and
communicates with each other via the keyboard.

Although there may be many advantages to be gained from using the Internet as an
educational tool there are also many drawbacks. For first time Internet users can be

1
a very unfriendly environment but with frequent use users can get familiar with
pretty quickly.

The amount of information available on the net means that user tend to be side-
tracked with a lot of unnecessary useless information. As the Internet is not owned
by any one there are no checks or censorship of information available. The upside
to this is that information is freely available to everyone without restriction but the
downside to this is that information can be placed into the wrong hands. Also as
there are no checks on the information on the net this may lead to inaccuracies and
misleading information being published.

The Internet is heavily dependent on hardware which can be expensive especially

as the Internet is constantly evolving. This means to take full advantage of this
evolving technology; upgrades in hardware and software are required.

1.1 Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of Internet access on students’
academic performance in Wachemo university for Department of Information
Technology.

Currently internet is use by many People to increase their knowledge and academic
performance, but Students are addicted to the social Medias rather than browsing
internet for educational purpose. University students are considered as Victims of
the social media that especially with face book site more than any group of people.
Regard to our research information technology student of Wachemo university
devote almost all their times with Facebook and movies not remember the course
Materials they originally planned to look for. Students prefer to use Facebook and

2
other media when they enter in to the computer lab rather than their academic
issues. Most of the department students have an account to use Facebook rather
than create emails and sharing of files from the internet.
As a result they:
 Do not try to use internet browse to related course.
 Prefer using Facebook rather than doing their assignment.
 Spent their time by watching movies its causes for failure to their academic
performance..
 Not only in the lab class but also in their dorm almost all students may not
use their computers for educational purpose.
 Slow internet connection is the cause for students those use internet for
educational aim.

1.2 Objectives of study

The Objectives of this study of will be conduct to identify the intensity of internet
usage by student who belongs to Wachemo university specifically for Department
of Information Technology. The purpose of our studies is to evaluate weather is
there any relationship between the usage of internet and students academics
performance. To better understand the relationship how the Internet affects
university students learning, the following questions should be answered. What are
the benefits of using the Internet as part of a university education? What are the
main factors affecting such use? What is the impact of such use on student
learning? What does it take to encourage positive attitudes in students toward
Internet use? This study will tries to answer these questions by exploring the
antecedents to, and the impacts of, Internet use in university education.

3
1.2.1 General Objective:
The main objective of these research proposals to determine the impact of internet
browsing on student Academic performance.

1.2.2. Specific Objectives:

The specific objective of this study includes:

 To identify negative positive impact of Internet Browsing on student

Academic Performance.
 To identify for what reasons students to use Internet Browsing.
 To find out an average time students spend with the site.
 To determine the degree of students dependent on Internet.
 To know for what purpose Students are going to use the Internet like
education or Entertainment.

1.3 Research Hypothesis/Question

Question

We prepare our hypothesis to test whether its meat the truth or not.
What is the impact of internet usage on the academic performance of students?

1.3.1 Hypotheses

H0: “There is no significant difference in the academic performance of students

with Internet access and those without Internet access (Browsing).

4
1.4 Literature Review
Technology, in various forms, has always held forth the promise of improving
education (Wenger, 1998). This is true whether one speaks of scholastic education
or its cousins, corporate and commercial training programs. Computer-Assisted
Instruction (CAI), instructional television (ITV), and programmed instruction (PI)
can be counted as early examples of the application of information technology to
education. The most recent and perhaps most visible cases are Web-based training
programs and degree-granting programs from fully accredited intuitions offered via
what is known as ”distance learning”.

Internet use in higher education requires many changes among faculty, student, and
administrative roles and functions; it keeps most existing institutional structures
and faculty roles interact (Baer, 1999).

1.5 Methods/Procedures of the study

1.5.1. Research Design

This research work was Experimental in nature. The study made use of two groups
of students. One group (test group) was exposed to Internet Browsing access with
aim of acquiring additional knowledge, while the other group (control group) was
they only depend on course material of the academic those given by their
Instructors in other words they only depends their self only on the teachers and
their course materials no need to use Internet browsing as a means getting further
knowledge. Internet dependent students will form the test group, while Not Internet
dependent students will be the control group without access to the Internet. Not
Internet dependent they have not uses Internet browsing as means of introducing
themselves with the Internet Browsing.

1.5.2 Data collection procedure
The survey method was used to collect primary data in this research paper. A pilot
test was conducted by distributing questionnaire forms to 20 students from Fresh
students and some senior student of information Technology in Wachemo
university questionnaires were used to collect data from students by acting on their
feedback and the data collection procedure depending on their some Academic
grades achievements what we get from the students.

We personally went Department of Information Technology and collected data by

interacting with students. Before hand over questionnaire form to students, we
approached to desire discipline students and make sure that they are not from
1styear 1 st
semester and had Examine whether they are familiar with the
department information technology lab class especially with Internet Browsing
result which is use full for working our research proposal.

1.5.3 Direct observation

Personal observation is the other primary source of data. Our group members
observed that some students are reading academic material then after the library
they are going to information technology lab class of the department to browse
internet and to referee the topic and spent much time on the internet browsing.
Since researcher understood that using Internet browsing have advantage but it will
have greater negative impact on the academic performance of the student if they
have been using for other purpose that is what our group members considered
during observation. The researcher also have awareness to say losing much time
with using Internet browsing for other purpose such as facebook and other
entertainments rather than the aim of education purpose will have greater impacts

7
on the decreasing of the academic performance of the student from the experience
of the students.

1.5.4 Questionnaires
The researcher use open ended question to get the information to the study area of
the research from Wachemo university IT department students with different year.
By preparing the question relate to the research area the researcher collects the data
from one respondent to the other respondent. Through this a researcher able to
know students how many students use internet browsing, the negative and positive
impact of using internet browsing related to academic performance and other
information relate the question what prepared.

1.5.5 Interview
Primary data gathering tools have advantage to collect the necessary data for the
study.Unstructured interview was used as a primary data gathering tool.
unstructured interview is an open situation, having greater flexibility and freedom.

1.6 Analysis of the Study

After the Data collected from the students, the numbers should be converted into
statements. We find a way to choose among hypotheses the one closest to the truth.

The results from this experimental study show that there is a significant difference
in the academic performance of students with Internet access and those without.
This proves the null hypothesis wrong. The post test results for the test group after
Internet access was significantly better than that of the control group.

Communication will still rank first on students use of the Internet, but with
lecturers using it as a supplement to classroom teaching and as an information

8
source, the students will utilize the Internet more for information retrieval on
academic and professional issues.

The Internet can be used to advantage for knowledge acquisition purposes by

serving as an alternative to scarce and outdated books. Instructors or Lecturers
should refer students to educational websites for more information.

Internet access should be made available at all hours because of the varied time
students prefer to browse. This will ensure that students do not miss lectures due to
the need to browse the Internet.

1.7 Scope of the study

It is better to conduct the research to all departments of Wachemo university, but
due to time constraint and different aspects, the research focuses only the impact of
the usage of internet browsing on academic achievement to department of IT
student in Wachemo university.
Because of IT students have knowledge and more experience to use internet than
other department students, the presence of available service in the department leads
to use internet and looking the other student’s motivation to use the internet
connection are the main goals of the study to select Information Technology
Department to gain additional knowledge for academic performance and their
future life.

1.8 Significance of the study

At the end of the research it announces the positive impact of internet browse for
the academic performance to the student. The output of the research creates
awareness on the internet usage for the students. More specifically, it requires the

9
responsibility of the student for their seek of academic performance rather than
using Facebook site and other entertainments such as movies.
Provision of Internet access to students creates a large revenue base for the
academic performance and improves their knowledge.
The student can achieve their dream if they spend much time to their academic
purpose.
Thus, this study seeks to provide information on the impact of the Internet as a
knowledge acquisition tool for students and its effect on student’s academic
performance. If the Internet is seen to positive impact on academic performance in
students most Departments would be encouraged to investment in the Facilitating
of Internet Connection and Related Resources technology.
