What is Engineering Mechanics

Engineering Mechanics is the study of forces and their effects on objects, defined as 3-dimensional bodies with mass. Forces are classified into external and internal types, with internal forces including normal force, shear force, bending moment, and torque. Stress measures the material's response to applied forces, with specific types like bearing stress and shear stress describing different interactions between forces and materials.

What is Engineering Mechanics?

 It is the study of forces and it’s resultant effect on a body/object.

What is a body/object?

 A body is an individual 3-dimensional object that has mass and that is distinguishable from other objects

Matter

 is anything that takes up space and can be weighed. In other words, matter has volume and mass.

What is a Force?

• Vector Quantity

• It is an unseen influence

• In ordinary sense, it is a push or pull exerted on a body

Two Main Classification of a Force

 External Force
o A force which it either causes the body to remain at rest or to be in motion.
 Internal Force
o A force that is produced by the external forces which causes the body to be stressed and deform.

Different Types of Internal Forces

 Normal Force
o A normal force is a type of force applied PERPENDICULAR to a cross-sectional area of the body.
o EXAMPLE: tension and compression
 Shear Force
o A shear force is a type of force applied PARALLEL to a cross-sectional area of the body.
 Bending Moment
o A force which tends to bend the body.
 Torque
o A force which tends to twist the body.

STRESS

 Stress is the measure of what the material feels from the externally applied forces.
 Stress is the force applied to a material, divided by the material's cross-sectional area
Actual Stress/ Force or sometimes called Computed Stress/ Force

 are derived from the effects of externally applied loads acting on the body being analyzed, meaning, they were
computed using the equations of equilibrium, σ Fx, σ Fy, and σ M0.

Working/Allowable/Maximum Forces-Stresses

 These are stresses computed from the structural properties of the member/body. These quantities speak of the
prescribed capacity or limit stress that a certain object can withstand.

BEARING STRESS

 Bearing stress is the contact pressure between the separate bodies. It differs from compressive stress, as it is an
internal stress caused by compressive forces.

SHEAR STRESS

 Forces parallel to the area resisting the force cause shearing stress. It differs to tensile and compressive stresses,
which are caused by forces perpendicular to the area on which they act. Shearing stress is also known as
tangential stress.
 V is the resultant shearing force which passes through the centroid of the area A being sheared.
