Condensed Silica Fume (CSF)
1. Introduction
Condensed silica fume (CSF), a highly reactive pozzolanic material, has gained attention for its
ability to improve concrete’s performance. This product is excellent for use as a Portland cement
supplement.
Physical Properties
CSF consists of extremely fine spheroidal, particles with an average size of 0.1µm, which is
about two orders of magnitude finer than particles of Ordinary Portland Cement. This fineness
allows CSF to fill micro voids in the cement matrix, enhancing concrete’s density.
Chemical Composition
CSF, which contains more than 80–85% (Si O₂) in amorphous form, is suitable for use in the
cement and concrete industries. CSF exhibits excellent pozzolanic characteristics. Minor
constituents include iron oxide, alumina, and alkalis.
Workability
While CSF improves concrete's cohesion, its high fineness can reduce workability, necessitating
the use of superplasticizers.
Time of set
The addition of silica fume in small amounts (10% by weight of cement) to ordinary concrete
mixtures (250 to 300 kg/m3 cement content) either has no significant effect or alters the time of
set of reference concrete only slightly.
Drying shrinkage
The data from drying shrinkage tests by different researchers show that the long-term shrinkage
of concrete is not affected significantly by the addition of CSF, especially when the water
content of
Strength
Due to very high pozzolanic reactivity of CSF, as a substitute for normal Portland cement in
concrete the compressive strength improving ability of CSF is 2 to 3 times that of a equivalent
mass of the Portland cement replaced, provided the addition of CSF is combined with the use of
a plasticizing admixture.
Durability
1. Ready-mixed concrete
2. A very high-strength concrete
