EN123 INTRODUCTION

TO CIRCUITS AND
ELECTRONICS
Lecture 3: Pre – Laboratory Lecture
EN123 Semester 2, 2021
S. Tirones (Mr.)
Objectives
• Laboratory Rules
• Electrical Safety
• Measuring Instruments
• General Measurement System
• Laboratory One
• Electrical Measurement Instruments
Laboratory Rules
• 1. Safety boots needs to be worn at all times when entering
the laboratory

• 2. No shorts are allowed; only long trousers are advised

• 3. No touching of equipment, except as per advised by the

instructors

• 4. Equipment and device must be supervised by the

instructors

• 5. Before powering up a connected circuit, make sure it is

verified and approved by the instructors
Laboratory Rules
• 6. No playing, eating, sleeping, and etc. inside the laboratory

• 7. No removal of laboratory equipment, except approved by

instructors

• 8. Always return equipment, instruments, and components to

their designated storage or where you collect the items

• 9. No moving unnecessary inside the laboratory

• 10. Follow all instructions given by the instructors

Electrical Safety
• 1. The use of extension cord is prohibited

• 2. all equipment must be properly grounded

• 3. Never operate electrical equipment will fluid spillage or

with wet hands

• 4. Never use plugs with exposed wires or that is labeled

faulty or bad

• 5. If there are sparks, smoke or any usual events

occurring, shut down the main supply immediately.
Electrical Safety
• 6. Electrical equipment that are not working properly
should not be used.

• 7. If a person is shocked by electricity, shut off the current

or break contact with the live wire. Do not touch the
person while he/she is in contact with the source of
current unless you are completely insulated against
shock.

• 8. Always identify the safety measures and equipment like

the exit door or fire extinguisher in the laboratory to
prepare for unexpected.
Measuring Instruments
• There are many measuring instruments capable of
measuring the magnitude or quantity of certain variables.

• Measuring instruments enables engineers to verify the

unseen variables and occurring in nature and to
understand the process involves in the system

• Different instruments are used for different purposes.

Example is the calculators that are used to add numbers,
a watch to read and give time stamp of hour, minutes and
seconds, and etc.
Measurement System
• There are 4 element in a measurement system

• 1. Sensing element
• 2. Signal conditioning element
• 3. Signal processing element
• 4. Data presentation element
Electrical Measuring Instruments
• Laboratory 1 covers the following types of measuring
instruments

• 1. Constant DC Power Supply

• supply constant 5V and 12V DC power respectively

Electrical Measuring Instruments
• 2. Digital Multi-meter

• General purpose instrument that measures voltage,

current, resistance, frequency, continuity, and etc.
Electrical Measuring Instruments
• 3. Function Generator

• Provides different signal generation such as sine wave,

square wave, and etc. for testing purposes. Also known
as signal generator
Electrical Measuring Instruments
• 4. Oscilloscope

• There are two types of oscilloscope

a) Analog oscilloscope b) Digital Oscilloscope

• Measure and displays waveform of signals, allows

measurement of frequency, timing, offset and etc.
Electrical Measuring Instruments
• Other electrical measuring instruments are as follows:

a) Ammeter – an instrument that measures the flow of current in

a circuit

b) Ohmmeter – an instrument that measures the resistance of a

component

c) Tachometer – a device that measures the speed of a motor

d) Spectrum analyzer – an instrument that measures and

displays the frequency spectrum of a signal
Electrical Measuring Instruments
e) Transistor tester – a device that measure the transistor

f) Wattmeter – an instrument that measures the power in a

circuit

g) Distortion meter – an instrument that measures the

distortion (unwanted signal) added to a circuit

h) Electricity meter – a device that measures the amount of

energy dissipated or amount of electricity used.

i) Many more with variety of applications.
