Assignment 2: Residential Construction

• Due Day 2, Unit 6
• Evaluation: 10%

Description
This assignment focuses on the design of a simple residence applying the various construction
methods. Students are given a base floor plan and are required to add appropriate details it
with construction details for the floors, roofs, beams, joists, and foundations including
sections, details and legends. The results of this assignment will be the foundation for
Assignment 3.

Required Materials
• BID Supply kit
• Weekly lectures and readings
• Ontario Building Code, Part 9
• AutoCAD or Revit

Handout

Instructions
1. Using the CAD file and SketchUp model provided, as well as the span tables in Part 9 of the
OBC, calculate and indicate all structural elements on the floor plan and then the cross
section using the proper professional notations including the following:
a. Label all 4 steel beams in basement supported on exterior foundation walls and
interior steel columns. Use OBC Table 9.23.4.3. Remember the supported length is the
length of the wood joists on each side of the beam added together and then divided by
2. If your number is in between one and another joist length, you must go up to the
next joist length number.

f. Ensure all notations indicating material type and size are properly indicated. Use the
existing labels and type over the text with the proper size of the supporting member.
Double click on the label and type over the text indicated with the size of the member
(i.e., 38x140 @ 400mm O.C.).
g. Use professional drafting techniques including line weights, scale, and text sizes. Use
the ID-CADD.ctb file from Assignment 1 and the Layers provided to ensure proper
lineweights.
2. Using the cross section provided and the indicated section line demonstrate knowledge of
structural components and attachments. Complete the section by adding all beams, posts,
joists, and notations detailing the various materials and structure of the plan:
a. Complete roof assembly including the joists within the structure, cladding notation,
and ventilation
b. Floor joists and their sizes
c. Beam sizes and materials
d. Post sizes and materials. Refer to 9.17.3.1 and 9.17.4.1 of the OBC for reference
e. Foundations and footings. The foundation can be either 8” block or 8” poured concrete
f. Drainage and damproofing notations on the foundation wall and around the footing
3. Fill out the title blocks accordingly with your name, date, class. Your final package should
include these completed sheets:
a. Sheet ID001 – Ground Floor Plan
b. Sheet ID002 – Basement Floor Plan
c. Sheet ID003 – Roof Plan
d. Sheet ID004 – Cross Section
