CHAPTER I
Introduction
Fertilizers are a substance that is added to soil to increase its fertility. They are essential
for the growth and production of plants for the world’s increasing inhabitants. There are two types
of fertilizers: organic and chemical, both of which have different effects towards the growth of
plants. With this, the researchers then wanted to know which of these two fertilizers produces the
best results towards the growth of mung beans. The researchers decided to use mung beans since
they are very easy to plant, and they start to grow really fast in just a matter of 2-3 days.
A part of the legume family are the mung beans (Vigna radiata). They are beans that are
small, green, and sometimes brown in color. They taste kind of sweet, and like sprouts or dried
beans, they are sold fresh. They have a high nutritive value and they are believed to help cure a lot
of ailments. Recent studies show that mung beans have properties which may lower LDL
cholesterol (Raman, 2018). “Moreover, a review of 26 studies found that eating one daily serving
of legumes such as beans significantly lowered LDL cholesterol levels.” (Jennings, 2016). A study
done in 2008 by the Institute of Crop Sciences at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences
found that when mung bean supplements were given to rats, they experienced lowered blood
glucose, plasma C-peptide, glucagon, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. At the same time,

increased insulin responsiveness and glucose tolerance of the rats were improved. Therefore, the
on the growth of mung beans. The importance of this study is to determine if the growth of mung
beans would be effective on either fertilizers. Through this research, the researchers would be
helping those people would know which fertilizer to use best when and if they plan to plant
mung beans.
General Problem: To determine which fertilizer produces the best results on the growth of mung
beans.
Specific Problem:
3.) What are the differences between Organic and Chemical fertilizers?
4.) Which among the two fertilizers produces the best results in terms of the growth of mung
beans?

Hypotheses:
This study is only limited to mung beans and chemical and organic fertilizers. The issues
are to see which fertilizer is the most effective to use towards the growth of mung beans. In this
research, we limited our time observing the growth of mung beans to only 15 days. We also
limited our organic fertilizer to goat manure since it was most accessible.

A. Mungbean
Mung beans (Vigna radiata (L.) are also known as green gram, golden gram, and chap suey
bean (Oplinger, et al., 1997). They are a legume that are in the same family as beans and lentils
(Slayton, 2018). In the ancient holistic medicine practice, they are considered to be one of the most
cherished foods (Andreeva, 2018). Mung beans are an important crop that has been grown in India
since ancient times. In Southeast Asia, Africa, South America and Australia, this plant is still
widely grown in. Mung beans are mainly grown for human consumption and can also be used as
green manure crop for livestock (Oplinger, et al., 1997). Also, because of its high nutritive value,
digestibility, and non-flatulent behavior, it stands out over other pulses. It is grown principally for
its protein rich edible seeds (Haq, 1989). They are erect with branches and they have carrying pods
in clusters near the top of the plant. A pod contains 8-15 seed grains. And the grains are green or
brown in color with globose in shape with a flat hilum. Unlike others, during the early stages of
development, mung beans cannot withstand waterlogging (Singh & Singh, 2011). During flooding
or waterlogging, oxygen concentration around the roots of the submerged plants, get restricted or
is reduced. Therefore, mung beans aren’t ideal plants to grow for wet tropical places (Fernandez
& Shanmugasundaram, 1998). However, compared to any other environmental factor, crop yield
of mung bean depends much more on an adequate supply of water (Kramer & Boyer, 1997).

B. Organic Fertilizer
According to Kozai and Niu (2015), organic fertilizer is an important element for the
development of microorganisms in the soil and is decomposed into inorganic fertilizers by the
microorganisms. Recently, the use of organic materials as fertilizers for crop production has
received attention for sustainable crop productivity (Tejada et al., 2009). Organic materials hold
great promise as a source of multiple nutrients and ability to improve soil characteristics (Moller,
2009). The major advantage in using organic fertilizer is that they work slowly. So, for the
fertilizer’s nutrients to be released, soil organisms need to break them down and this takes time.
Since they work slowly, nothing is wasted. Organic material that’s been added to fertilized soil is
easier to work with because more air gets into the plant roots. Organic material also allows soil to
hold water longer. Therefore, increasing bacterial and fungal activity in the soil. So, organic garden
fertilizer doesn’t only help the plants, but improves the soil as well (Vinje, 2018).
C. Chemical Fertilizer
Tuliano, 2018 stated that, “Synthetic substances such as chemical fertilizers, provide the
important nutrients for plant development and growth. Chemical fertilizers combine synthetic
forms of the primary macronutrients for plants such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, as
well as a variety of micronutrients and additives. Synthetically developed fertilizers provide the
benefit of having more nutrients per pound than organic fertilizers, thus reducing costs. Chemical
fertilizers have many uses for the average gardener and homeowner, as well as for commercial

use. The nutrients in chemical fertilizers help plants achieve lush, green growth. The nitrogen in
fertilizer promotes cell division and leafy vegetation, phosphorus helps plants with photosynthesis
and respiration and potassium helps plants absorb the other nutrients, according to NASA.
Chemical fertilizers contain a higher concentration of macro- and micronutrients than organic
fertilizers, which allows gardeners to spread less of a concentration for the same results. Depending
on brand, chemical-based fertilizers provide varying levels of additives, which help grow plants
with chemical-based fertilizers, can cause poor growth and even plant death. University or private
labs can test soil samples to determine the recommended amount of fertilizer to apply for specific

The researchers decided to have a month as our time frame. Every 5th day, the researchers
will measure if there is any difference(s) on their height. The height will be measured in
centimeters (cm).
