New York has Central Park; London has Hyde Park while Kuala Lumpur has its own piece of green belt amidst
the hustle and bustle of city life. It's an ideal place for a leisurely stroll in a tranquil setting, all without
having to leave the city. The Lake Gardens was created by Sir Alfred Venning, who persuaded the ruling
government to allow him to turn a swamp land into rambling trails with man-made lakes, spanning 60
hectares. However, as the city expanded, the Lake Gardens reduced in size. However, it is still a sizeable area
and boasts of more than just grass and water within its grounds.
For example, the gardens incorporate the National Monument, Bird Park, Hibiscus Garden as well as Malaysia's
Parliament House.
Additionally, Carcosa Seri Negara is on a hilltop overlooking the Lake Gardens. Today, the nineteenth-century
British colonial mansion has been converted into an exclusive hotel.
1. According to the passage, what do New York, London and Kuala Lumpur have in common?

Lots of people become good at something when they are young. And quite a lot of children know what career
they want to follow when they are older. But not everyone opens their own company. This is exactly what
Isabella Rose Taylor has done. She started designing clothes when she was eight years old.
At the time, she was a keen painter. She used a lot of reds, blues and yellows, and these colours helped her
to think of new clothes which she could make.
When she started designing and making clothes, Isabella just made clothes for fun. But people liked her
designs, so soon she started selling them online. Now she has a business and takes part in fashion shows.
She runs her business from the family home, where she has made one room into an office, and another into
a studio where the clothes are made.
Isabella has also found time to finish school and get a college degree. She’s intelligent, and she has thousands
of followers online who love her stuff. It’s brilliant that she already has people who work for her. Above all,
she really knows what is needed to succeed in the world of fashion. And I am sure that she will.
‘The way I see it is I get to follow my dream and be a teenager at the same time. I think I’m pretty lucky,’
she says.
1. What does the writer say is unusual about Isabella Rose Taylor?
A. She planned her future career when she was very young.
B. She started her own business when she was very young.
B. The colours in her paintings gave her ideas for clothes to make.

Passage 4.
Food Firsts
How much do you know about the history of some of your favorite foods? Do you know when peoplein
England started cooking curry dishes? Do you know in which country pizzas or hamburgers were first
Many people think the English found out about curry from people in India in the 1600s. In reality, wealthy
English people were eating dishes made with curry spices hundreds of years before British ships traveled to
India. Cooks of wealthy English families during the time of King Richard I were making curry dishes, and in
fact, the word “curry” can be found in an English language cookbook as far back as 1377.
As for pizza, this dish was probably first made in Persia (what is now Iran). The Persians were eating round,
flat bread with cheese in the 500s. That was nearly 1,000 years before pizza became popular in Naples,
Italy!
Finally, let’s look at the truth behind hamburgers. Many people think hamburgers are an American food.
However, according to some stories, hamburgers came from Hamburg, Germany. A German named Otto
Kuasw created the first hamburger in 1891. Four years later, German sailors introduced hamburgers to
Americans.
Where foods come from isn’t nearly as important as how they taste; as long as they are delicious! So, go
get some of your favorite food and dig in.
Question 2: According to paragraph 2, which is probably true about British curry dishes in the 1400s?
A. The dishes did not have meat. B. The spices cost a lot.
C. People ate curry on special days. D. British sailors first made curry.

Passage 5.
Our happiness does not depend only on what we have, say scientists. What we realize we have is just as
important. This is why the rich often seem to be sad, but people with very little can be much happier with
their lives. It is surprising that we do not usually think about how lucky we are. Most of us have good health,
homes, and friends. We don't notice how good life normally is until we're feeling sad about something. But
we don't have to wait for something negative to happen. Instead, we should be thankful all the time for the
good things in our lives. We can do this by writing down five of them every night such as something that we
own, or the people we are fond of. By repeating this every day for a month, it will become a habit. People
who do this are healthier, more successful, and more satisfied with their own lives.
Question 2: According to paragraph 1, which of the following is NOT mentioned as something most of us
have?
Question 4: According to paragraph 2, what will happen when we feel thankful for the good things in our
lives?
A. We will feel dissatisfied with our lives. B. More people will be fond of us.
C. We will be healthier and more successful. D. We will be happy every day for a month.
Passage 6.
In my view, there is usually one necessary subject missing from most school timetables. Very few students
are taught how to organize their learning and how to make the best use of their time. Let's have some

the information the English dictionary contains? Can you take notes quickly, and can you understand them

afterwards? For some reason, many schools give learners no help with these matters. Teachers ask students
to memorize pages from books, or tell them to write ten pages, or have them discuss in groups, but do not
explain how to do it. Learning by heart can be useful for many students, but it is important to have a real
understanding of a subject. You can waste a lot of time memorizing books, without catching on to anything
about the subject.
Question 4. In the sentence “Teachers ask students to memorize pages from books”, what is closest in
meaning to “memorize”?
Passage 7.
Most people would say they know what stress is. But for scientists who study stress, it has been
surprisingly hard to define. This is because there are so many ways of looking at stress. Some researchers
have studied how our bodies react to stress. You know how your heart beats faster, you sweat more heavily,
and 3 your words do not come out right when you are placed in a stressful situation. But knowing how we
feel when we experience stress does not explain it; nor does it tell us what causes it.
Other scientists have looked at stressors: events or situations that produce stress. A deadline, a poor
test performance, or annoying noises all may be thought of as stressors. Even pleasant events can be
stressors. Planning a party or starting a new job can be just as stressful as being called to the headteacher’s
48

office. Stress, then, can be caused by both negative and positive events, or stressors. Of course, whether an
event is thought of as positive or negative is, in some ways, a matter of personal choice.
In sum, it is the way people interpret an event that makes it stressful or not stressful. This process is
the judgement of the value, performance or nature of the event. Depending on how people examine, or judge
they may or may not consider them stressful.
Question 5: According to paragraph 3, which of the following can make an event stressful or not?
Learning a new language is always an excellent idea. It provides you incredible benefits that come with the
backing of science! One of the most useful languages to learn is English. Learning a second language is one
of the best ways to keep your brain active and challenged. Learning another language offers
important cognitive benefits at any age, helping to keep the mind active and even reducing the risk of mental
disease and slowing mental decline later in life. When learning English as a second language, you approach
new ways to think and express yourself through written and spoken words. Learning multiple languages can
help you communicate more clearly in any language as you learn more about how language itself works and
how to use it to promote ideas and reach out to others in a variety of social and work situations. The world
may not have a global language, but English is the default option for countless forms of communication across
the globe. That’s why one of the benefits of learning English is that it significantly boosts your hiring potential.
In addition, it can offer you educational opportunities. If you desire access to some of the best schools like
Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge or MIT, then knowing English provides you an incredible edge. It’s
expected that around 2 billion people around the world will learn English over the next decade.
A. you learn more about how to promote your ideas and make contact with others
4.What does the word “edge" used in the third paragraph mean?
5. All the following sentences are the benefits of learning English except _____________.
Passage 8.
Most of the people who like films are only interested in the leading actor or actress when they enjoy a film. It
seems to them that only the actors or actresses have made the film successful. They always pay attention to
their appearance, performance, and fashion. There are many film viewers who have no awareness of other
people’s work to make a film. A finished film is, actually, the result of the collaboration of many people, and
the most important among them are the scriptwriter, the cinematographer, the film editor, the actor, and the
director. Especially, in some thrilling scenes, the roles of stuntmen are very important. They are always in

danger when they are acting; some of them are even badly hurt or dead. But what a pity, many film viewers
rarely appreciate their work.
Passage 9.
Worldwide, cities gain a million people a week. This kind of growth brings problems, and today of the world's
largest cities face similar challenges: high housing costs, pollution and crime. What are some urban planners
doing to fix these problems and improve people's lives?
To improve residents' lives, Hyderabad is planting trees and parks. The city is even creating "greener" buildings
that use less water and less electricity for power. Adding green to a city has a number of advantages. For
example, trees remove pollution from the air and make it cleaner. In Hyderabad, streets were gray and ugly
a few years ago. Today, they are filled with trees and flowers, making the city cleaner and more colorful.
Green areas also give people places to relax or exercise and walk. A study in the U.S. showed something else
interesting: the greener a neighborhood is, the less crime there is against people and property.
Many people work in the center of Sao Paulo, but they don't live there. They've spread out to neighborhoods
outside the city, where housing is cheaper. Every day, these people travel into the city, and traffic is very
heavy. Urban planners are using different strategies to address this issue. First, they are building better
subways. Another goal is to make it cheaper for people to live in the downtown area. Doing this will shorten
the distance people travel for work and x reduce traffic and pollution in the city.

The streets are crowded with traffic. Taxis are bringing tired people from the airport and the train stations to
the hotels. They hope to sleep a few hours before their busy day in the big city. Trucks are bringing fresh
fruits and vegetables into the city. Ships loading with food and fuel are tied up at the dock. Towards morning
the streets are quieter. But they are never deserted in the big city.
By eight o’clock the streets in the morning are filled again with people. Millions of people live in the big city.
And millions of people who work in the big city live in the suburbs, the commuters, are hurrying out of the
train stations, subways, buses, and apartment blocks. Everyone is in a hurry. Some stop only to drink a quick
cup of coffee. There is no time for breakfast, others stop to buy the morning paper. They read the headlines
before they hurry to the office buildings where they work.
The noise of traffic grows louder. Trucks are loading and unloading. The policemen blow their whistles to stop
the traffic and hurry it along. Elevated trains are roaring overhead. Subways are rumbling below the ground.

It is sometimes very difficult to decide which career to choose when you leave school. British students are
helped by careers teachers, who inform them about different careers, the qualifications needed and try to
help them make up their minds. Mr Hemmings, a careers teacher as well as a History teacher, talks about his
experience.
‘I've been a careers teacher for around five years and, on the whole, I've found it a rewarding experience.
Our students have careers lessons once a week for the fourth and the fifth years (15 and 16 years old). My
task consists of explaining as accurately as possible the qualifications required for each job, as well as the
type of work and personal skills involved.
Advising teenagers can be rather difficult – some youngsters have no idea at all of what they want to do, or
of what the real world outside school really is. They come to me and say ‘I don't like routine nine-to-five jobs…
I'd like something exciting that pays well…' What can I say? That we're running out of exciting jobs? But they
usually end up facing reality and come down to their senses after a while…
Anyway here in school we only give them a piece of advice according to what we know about their favourite
and weakest subjects, pastimes and personality. But if you ask me, things are happening so quickly around
here, with our economy in the dumps that sometimes you just don't know what to say. A few days ago I
asked a fifteen-year-old boy what job he had in mind and he replied ‘I haven't any plans… You see, Sir, I don't
know what new jobs will replace today's'. What could I say?

The Eiffel Tower is one of the world's most famous sights. The 324-metre-tall iron tower attracts millions of
tourists to Paris every year. It has been an iconic part of Paris' skyline for 133 years. However, it is showing
its age. Engineers recently conducted a survey of the monument. They found that its metal is full of rust. They
said it is “in a poor state”. They added that if its designer Gustave Eiffel was alive today and saw his creation,
“he would have a heart attack”. Engineers say there are many cracks in the iron. The tower needs many
repairs. A 2016 report on the tower stated there were 698 faults on the tower. These were serious enough to
put the tower's long-term future in doubt.
Construction of the Eiffel Tower started in January 1887. It opened to the public on the 31stof Marches? It
was built to celebrate the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Builders needed 10,100 tons of iron to make the tower.

after 20 years. However, the French government changed Its mind and kept it in place. The tower is currently
being repainted ahead of the 2024 Olympics. Engineers say painting the metal will not make the rust problem
go away. They say the existing paint needs to be completely removed first. However, this will take too long
