AP Calc Notes - Sec 10.3 area p3

This document covers the concept of finding areas enclosed within polar curves in AP Calculus, utilizing Riemann sums and definite integrals. It reviews various types of polar graphs, including limacons, cardiods, rose curves, and circles, providing examples and formulas for each. The document also includes exercises to calculate specific areas related to these curves.

AP Calculus Section 103: Area Enclosed within Polar Curves

To find the area enclosed within a polar curve we will use the same infinite summation
concept that we have been using to find the area under or between curves.

Riemann Sum
Definite Integral
(utilizing rectangle areas)

Remember that the definite integral gives the same result as the Riemann Sum. In order
to find the area enclosed within a polar curve we will use the same idea but with the area
of sectors instead of rectangles.

Polar Graphs Review

Limacons/Cardiods Examples

r = a ± bsin(θ)
r = a ± bcos(θ)
notes:
a/b < 1 Limacon w/
r = 1  sin(θ) r = 2 + 2cos(θ)
inner loop
a/b = 1 Cardiod
1 < a/b < 2 Dimpled
Limacon r = 1 + 2cos(θ)
a/b ≥ 2 Convex

Polar Graphs Review

Rose Curves notes:

1. a > 0 and n is a positive integer
r = asin(nθ)
2. if n is odd there are n equally spaced petals of radius a
r = acos(nθ)
3. if n is even there are 2n equally spaced petals of radius a
4. a rose with an even number of petals will be traced
completely once from 0 to 2π
5. a rose with an odd number of petals will be traced
completely once from 0 to π

Examples

r = 3sin(2θ) r = 2cos(3θ) r = 2sin(4θ)
