Reported speech is when we tell someone what

another person said. To do this, we can use direct

speech or indirect speech.
There are 2 types of
reported speech
direct speech
indirect speech
Direct Speech
Direct speech repeats or quotes,
the exact words spoken.
When we use direct speech in Examples
writing, we place the words “i like ice cream” Maria said
“i visited Spain” he said
spoken between quotation
marks (" ") and there is no
change in these words.
Indirect Speech
indirect speech is usually used to talk about the
past, so we normally change the tense of the
words spoken. We use reporting verbs like 'say',
'tell', and we may use the word 'that' to introduce
the reported words. Inverted commas are not
used.
Examples:
Present Simple to Past Simple Present Continuos to Past continuous
Direct Speech Direct Speech
She said, "I love traveling." He said, "I am studying."
Indirect Speech Indirect Speech
She said that she loved traveling. He said that he was studying.

Past Simple to Past Perfect Will to Would

Direct Speech Direct Speech
She said, "I saw him." He said, "I will call you"
Indirect Speech Indirect Speech
She said that she had seen him. He said that he would call me.
"Say" and "tell"
Use 'say' when there is no indirect object:
He said that he was tired.
Always use 'tell' when you say who was
being spoken to (i.e. with an indirect
object):
He told me that he was tired.
Conclusion
Reported Speech helps us tell what someone said in a different way.

Direct Speech: We use the exact words and quotation marks.

Example: He said, "I am happy."

Indirect Speech: We change some words and verb tenses.

Example: He said that he was happy.

Learning Reported Speech helps us speak and write clearly in English!
