STATPRO_Module 2_Lesson 2B

This document outlines the process of finding the area under the normal curve, emphasizing that the total area is 1 and the curve is symmetrical about the mean. It provides a five-step method for determining probabilities associated with z-values using a z-table. Several examples are included to illustrate the application of this process.

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

MODULE 2 | TOPIC B | LESSON 2

Sub Lesson B
Finding the Area Under the
Normal Curve
Reminders:
1. The total area under the normal curve is 1 or 100%.
2. Since the normal curve is symmetrical about the mean, then half
the normal curve has an area of 0.5.
3. The table you will use gives only the area to the right of the mean.
4. The given area in the table is the area from z = 0 to + z.
5. Area is always + but z can be + or -
6. Finding the areas under the normal curve is the same as finding
the probability.
Five-step process of finding the area / probability under
the Standard Normal Curve given a z-value
1. Sketch the normal distribution and indicate the mean.
(The mean coincides with z = 0.)
2. Identify the region under the curve by drawing a vertical line through
each z-value.
(Use the z-table to determine areas associated with the given z-values.)
3. Shade the required region/area.
4. Find the areas of z-values in the z-table. (See next slide.)
5. Compute the proportion of the required area and express the result
as a probability. [P (a < z < b )]
Process of finding the area/probability
of z-values in the z-Table

Step 1: Express the given z – value into three-digit form.

Step 2: Using the z – table, find the first two digits on the left column.
Step 3: Match the third digit with the appropriate column on the right.
Step 4: Read the area (or probability) at the intersection of the row and
the column. This is the required area.

Example 1: Find the area that corresponds from z = 0 to z = 1.
a. Express the given into three-digit form z = 1.00
b. In the table, find the row z = 1.0, then find the
column with the heading .00
c. Read the area ( or probability) at the intersection
of row 1.0 and the column .00.
