BASIC ASSUMPTIONS OF ART

1. Art has been created by all people at all times.

2. Art involves experiences.

3. Art is not nature; nature is not art. Art is made by man.

4. Art is everywhere.

5. Art is man‘s oldest means of expression.


6. Art is an expression and communication.

ART FORMS/WAYS OF EXPRESSING ONESELF THROUGH ART


1. VISUAL ARTS – Those that appeal to the sense of sight.

2. FILM – The art of putting together successions of frames or images in order to create an
illusion of movement.

3. PERFORMING ARTS – Live art and the artist‘s medium is mainly the human body which he
or she uses to perform.

4. LITERARY ARTS – Artists who practice literary arts use words to express themselves and
communicate emotions to the readers.

5. ARCHITECTURE – The art of making beautiful buildings.

6. DANCE – performance art wherein series of movements that follows the rhythm of the music
accompaniment.

7. POETRY PERFORMANCE – Form of art wherein both literary art and performing art
combine through poems being performed in front of an audience.

8. THEATER – Uses live performers to present accounts or imaginary events before a live
audience and on a stage or drama space.

9. APPLIED ARTS – Artists in this field bring beauty, charm, and comfort into many things that
are useful in everyday life.

ART – comes from the Aryan word “Ar” which means “to put together” and Latin “Ars” which
means “Skills”. It encompasses visual, literary, musical, and performance arts.

KINDS OF ARTS
1. FINE ARTS AESTHETIC ARTS (MAJOR ARTS)- focused on aesthetic values. (sight,
hearing, touch, smell, taste)
2. UTILITARIAN ARTS OF PRACTICAL ARTS (MINOR ARTS)– intended to be used in
practical settings but they must also possess artistic qualities.

3. FUNCTIONAL ARTS – arts that we use in our daily lives such as tools, architectural
structures, roads, bridges, buildings, furniture. Also kitchen utensils, coins, bills, dress, weapons,
etc.

4. INDIRECTLY FUNCTIONAL ART – arts that are perceived through the senses.
FUNCTIONS OF ART

1. PERSONAL FUNCTION – personal interests of artists.

2. PHYSICAL FUNCTION – to satisfy man’s physical needs.

3. SOCIAL FUNCTION – particular collective interest or makes people aware of the social
issues around them.

4. AESTHETIC FUNCTION – artworks that function aesthetically when it becomes instrumental


for a man to be cognizant of the beauty of nature.
5. CULTURAL FUNCTION – arts that serves an aperture towards skill, knowledge, attitudes,
customs, and traditions of different group of people.

6. POLITICAL FUNCTION – aid to a campaign about politics or a political agents.


7. RELIGIOUS FUNCTION – created and used for/in religious activities that fulfills their
religious function.

8. ECONOMIC FUNCTION – art is consumable for the masses and it helps the economic gains
of artists.

SUBJECT AND CONTENT

SUBJECT – the visual focus or the image that maybe extracted from examining the artwork; the
“what”
CONTENT – the meaning that is communicated by the artists or the artwork; the “why”

FORM – the development and configuration of the artwork – how the elements and the medium
or material are put together; the “how”

TYPES OF SUBJECT

1. REPRESENTATIONAL ART – arts have subjects that refer to objects or events occurring in
the real world.
2. NON-REPRESENTATIONAL ART – art forms that do not make a reference to the real world.

3. ABSTRACTION – filtering/distilling certain characteristics to be left with what is integral.

CONTENT IN ART – the meaning or message that is expressed or communicated by the
artwork.

THREE LEVELS OF MEANING

1. FACTUAL MEANING – most rudimentary, what can be extracted from the identifiable.

2. CONVENTIONAL MEANING – pertains to acknowledge interpretation of the artwork.

3. SUBJECTIVE MEANING – varied different meanings an individual can derive to his


personal nature, background, etc.
ARTISTS AND ARTISAN

ARTIST – person who performs all forms of creative arts.

ARTISAN – worker who practices a trade or a craft.


GUILDS – were a type of social fellowship, an association structured with rules, customs, rights,
and responsibilities.

ARTIST VS. ARTISAN

An ARTIST is dedicated only to the creative side, making visually pleasing work only for the
enjoyment and appreciation of the viewer, but with no functional value.

An ARTISAN is essentially a manual worker who makes items with his or her hands. They
create great beauty of artwork as well as being functional.

MANAGERS, CURATORS, AND ART DEALERS

MANAGER – a gallery owner or manager chooses and present art for sale.

CURATOR – in charge of a collection of exhibits in a museum or gallery and is responsible for


assembling, cataloguing, managing, presenting and displaying artworks.

ART DEALERS – a person or company that buys and sells works of art with the aim of making
profits.

ART PRODUCTION PROCESS

1. PRE-PRODUCTION – process of preparing all the elements involved in the creation of an


artwork.

2. PRODUCTION PROCESS – the artist is now ready to manipulate his/her medium and the
elements that come with it to be able to execute an artwork.

3. POST PRODUCTION – happens when the artwork has been completed.
