CAPSTONE-PROJECT

The capstone project involves conducting an energy audit of a selected school building at ASSCAT and designing a renewable energy system to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources. Students will analyze current energy consumption, identify efficiency improvements, and calculate the necessary system size and costs. The project aims to provide insights into energy consumption, propose a feasible renewable energy solution, and contribute to a more sustainable campus.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

IN
ABE 101 - RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR AB APPLICATION

Project Title: Sustainable Power: Energy Audit and [Renewable Energy] System Design for
[Building Name] in ASSCAT, Bunawan Agusan del Sur.

Project Overview:
Students will conduct an energy audit for a selected building within the school campus to
analyze its current energy consumption. Based on the findings, they will design a renewable
energy system that could potentially power the building, reducing its reliance on conventional
energy sources.

Project Objectives:
1. Perform an energy audit of a selected school building (e.g., library, laboratory, classroom,
gymnasium).
2. Determine viable options to reduce that electrical usage and increase efficiency.
3. Calculate the new daily and annual electrical load.
4. Design a renewable energy system that meets the building’s energy demands.
5. Estimate costs and return on investment (ROI).
6. Present findings and propose an implementation plan.

Review Criteria:
The capstone project is chunked into three parts:
1. Site description (25 points)
2. Calculating electrical load and reducing the load through efficiency improvements (35
points)
3. Designing a system to meet the building's annual electrical needs with cost estimate. (40
points)

Project Phases:
1. Site Description
Describe your site and its usage, being sure to include relevant details needed to design a
Renewable energy system for a specific situation. These details include whether the building is
residential or commercial, patterns of usage (single family home, multiple family home, 24/7
manufacturing plant, office park building that generally is only open during weekdays from 7
AM to 6 PM, shopping mall open for business daily from 8 AM to 9:30 PM), overall size (how
many floors, rooms, overall square footage), and footprint of the building.

2. Energy Audit (Data Collection & Analysis)

 Choose a specific school building for the energy audit.
 Conduct a load inventory:
o In a spreadsheet or a table, quantify all of the major electrical devices in the
building, either based on the actual appliances (if known), or estimates for such
appliances (wholesalesolar.com, lbl.gov, energy.gov).
o Include the power consumption for the appliance, the number of each appliance,
an estimate of hours used each day and per month.
o Describe any assumptions being used in your calculations.
o For example, an electric space heater is used 6 hours daily, but only during 4
months of the year; a window AC unit is used only on days above 27 °C (90 °F),
which on average is 13 days per year at this location.
o Calculate the average monthly electrical energy usage for each item and the total
annual energy usage for each item in kWh.
o Based on these values, calculate the total average monthly electrical usage for the
building and total annual energy usage.
Table 1. Energy Audit
Number of hours Average Monthly Total Annual
Power Rating

(kW)
(hr) (kW-hr) (kW-hr)

Bulb 1 22 days per
month)
Fluorescent
0.05 176 8.8 105.6
Bulb 2
Total 17.6 211.2

 Identify energy efficiency opportunities (e.g., LED lighting, smart switches).

o Next, identify any areas where efficiencies could be introduced to reduce the total
load (for example: changing all incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs, replacing a
washing machine with a high efficiency unit, ).
o Copy the first table and create a new table in the same document labeled
“efficiency improvements.” For the areas where you've identified efficiency
improvements, input the new power consumption for any new efficient appliances
within the existing rows, along with any changes in the quantity of items, and/or
new estimated usage times.
o Calculate the new monthly and annual electrical usage for those rows, and then
recalculate the building’s new potential average daily electrical energy usage and
total annual electrical usage in kWh.

3. Renewable Energy System Design

 Calculate the size of the system needed to cover a percentage (e.g., 50%-100%) of the
building’s energy needs.
 Select appropriate solar panels, wind turbines, or other energy sources.
 Design an energy storage system (batteries) and backup system.
 Include cost estimation and payback period calculations.

4. Report & Presentation

 Compile findings into a detailed report with:
o Energy audit results
o Proposed renewable energy solution
o Cost-benefit analysis
o Environmental impact
 Create a presentation and propose the system during the scheduled date.

Expected Outcomes:
1. Energy consumption insights for a school building.
2. A feasible renewable energy system design tailored to campus needs.
3. Cost and energy savings projections.
4. A step toward a more sustainable school campus.
