Each year, Americans throw away about 250 million tons of garbage. That's about
two kilos per person per day, most of which ends up in a …………………….. . All kinds
of trash can be found in these places, from broken toys to unwanted CDs, and a lot of
items that could be recycled.
Apart from being an eyesore, these piles of garbage create environmental damage
and …………………….. harmful gases, which definitely contribute to climate change.
This issue has made San Francisco determined to aim for a once-unthinkable goal:
zero waste.
Last year, San Francisco local council made it easier for families to recycle by
collecting materials from their houses. It gave families two different bins; one for
biodegradable items and another for recyclable goods. …………………….., the city
residents were able to separate their rubbish for recycling.
Recently, the local council has decided to go even further in order to be make Los
Angeles the …………………….. of the cities. It has put computer chips inside the
rubbish bins that are given to families in the area. The chips measure the amount of
…………………….. in the bin and also give information about the kind of materials in
the bin: paper, glass, metal etc. In other words, if the family throws away these
materials …………………….. recycling them, the council finds out. And when this
happens, a letter will be sent to the family asking them to be …………………….. about
recycling.
2- Put the bracketed words in the correct tense or form.

An animal or plant species is classified rare when it is at the risk of becoming extinct
from the planet. Most of these species are considered to be (danger)
…………………….. as they are at the risk of becoming extinct with only a few
individuals surviving. This decrease in their population can be attributed to numerous
factors such as over-hunting, the (lose) …………………….. of habitats or a change in
the environmental conditions.
While thousands of animals are considered rare or critically rare, today only 10
percent of these species - the tiger and the panda being the (good) ……………………..
examples of the same - are identified as threatened and given legal protection. At this
particular moment, approximately, 20 percent of animal species (to fight)
…………………….. for their very existence on the planet.
But why do we even have to save these rare species? Well, we should know that all
the members of kingdom Animalia come together to form a complicated ecological
network, and extinction on any member of this network might (to cause)
…………………….. serious imbalance in the overall ecosystem.
There is no doubt that rare animals are protected through various laws and
organizations, however, more public (aware) …………………….. programs should be
implemented to gain public notice. This way, we can protect animals from extinction
and conserve the biodiversity of nature.
3- Circle the correct alternative.

The ozone layer protects living beings on earth from the ultraviolet rays of the Sun.
This layer is becoming thinner day by day (lead / due / result) to pollutants like
nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. There are major holes in the
ozone layer above the Antarctica skyline which are now (logging / poaching /
threatening) the continent badly. Let's take a look at some of the ways in which we
can prevent the current situation from getting (bad / worse / worst).
Each one of us has a role to play to avoid any catastrophic outcomes as we are
expected to keep a check on the emissions of harmful gases (into / on / under) the
air in order to protect the ozone layer. We should first replace old refrigerators and
air-conditioners as they are the major contributors of CFCs in the atmosphere.
Electronic appliances emit CFCs even (when / where / which) they are not in use.
So always unplug the electronic instruments every time they are not needed. It is also
preferable to walk as far as possible. So avoid using vehicles. Simple measures like
using public transportation instead of your own private vehicle or carpooling will help
in the long run.
We have to buy energy-efficient appliances like (energy-saving / energy-saved /
energy-save) bulbs; they look funny but they use one quarter (1/4) of the electricity
compared to ordinary bulbs.
Last but not least, plant trees, as they absorb UVs and (however / thus / moreover)
protect the environment.

4- Complete the conversation below with utterances from the box. Be

careful! There’s one utterance in the box you don’t need.
(2 marks)

a- I think I'd rather focus on something more positive.

b- Well, we could look at the solutions rather than the problem.
c- I think asking Eva to do it would be better. She is a better artist
than us.
d- Oh, OK. Do you think we should mention recycling as well?
e- Well, I think it's because there's so much rubbish around the
- Laura: David, the school has asked us to come up with a poster about littering.
- David: Why?
- Laura: .........................................................................................................................
...........................................
- David: Oh, OK. So how about a picture with the problems litter causes: it costs
money to remove, it looks bad, it attracts more litter and it can harm people and
animals.
- Laura: .........................................................................................................................
...........................................
- David: Oh yes? Like what?
- Laura: .........................................................................................................................
...........................................
- David: Such as?
- Laura: We could encourage people to put rubbish in bins and not on the floor, take
rubbish home with them, and use a cloth bag rather than plastic bags.
- David: .........................................................................................................................
............................................
- Laura: Yes, good idea. The poster could have four corners: bin it, take it home,
don't use plastic, and recycle.
- David: That sounds brilliant!

1. Today, some types of animals are (danger) ………………………….. species.

This means there are very few animals of that kind left on Earth. The animals
could face (extinct) ……………………… . Extinction is when all the animals of
that kind die out. When a type of animal is extinct, it is gone forever.

2 One problem for animals is that their habitat is sometimes (destruction)

………………………….. by humans. As human populations increase, more and
more space is needed for people. Building areas for people to live pushed
animals out of their (nature) …………………… homes. Forest and swamp
habitats are the most threatened. Trees are cut down to make room for homes
and businesses. Swamps are filled in so that neighbourhoods can expand. The
habitat is destroyed. The animals have nowhere else to go. Without a habitat,
the number of animals begins to dwindle.

3. Humans must prevent the extinction of animals due to the (lose)

………………………….. of their habitat. We have to become more aware of
animal populations when considering building and expansion projects. Other
options may not be as convenient, but the (survive) …………………… of the
animals needs to be taken into consideration. Better planning and an
awareness of how human actions affect animals can make a difference. It is
still possible to maintain a diverse animal population for future generations to
enjoy.

4. Another major cause of endangerment of animals is overhunting by

humans. The practice of shooting animals as a sport can (quick)
………………………….. bring the animals to extinction. This is a worldwide
problem. The governments of countries around the world must unite to agree
on laws regarding animals. Some animals may have large enough populations
so hunting will not (danger) ………………………….. them. Others must be
protected. There is still hope for animals who are already on the endangered
species list. Some organizations are working hard to recreate habitats for
them. Breeding programs are helping animal populations increase. We all
have to be aware and think before we act. The things we do can affect more
than just ourselves.
