THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES OF STUDENTS IN ACCRA

TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY.

The advancement of internet technology has established the most effective channel for
communication. Accordingly, two-thirds of all internet users use social networking and blogging
websites, which serve as a platform for engagement and communication (Sivakumar) (2020). The use
of social media has increased substantially during the last several years. It is used by individuals who
are employed, but it is also more popular with students and those who work in the educational field.
Raut & Patil (2016). Students use social media for a range of activities. Making new friends, having
fun, keeping in touch with old friends, going to social events, and producing media are the top five
reasons people use social media. One Nyland (2007).
Given social media's widespread use, it should not be surprising that it has altered how people
connect and live. Facebook is one of the most recent examples of a communication medium that
students have largely accepted. As a result, it can facilitate student-professor collaboration and foster
relationships in the classroom. This chapter presents the methodology which was used for the study.
It explains the research design. It also gave details about the Research Design, Population of the
Study, Sample and Sampling Technique, Research Instrument, Method of Data Collection, and
Method of Data Analysis
RESEARCH DESIGN
The research design is the conceptual framework used to conduct the study, and it entails acquiring
and analyzing relevant data. The strategy specifies the approach and technique of research used to
gather precise and trustworthy data that satisfied the study's objectives and supplied the answers to
its open-ended questions. A descriptive research design was used by the researcher. Descriptive
research, in the words of Sekaran and Bougie, (2013), is a methodology used to address the what,
how, and why. Because it allowed for the collection of data using measurements of central tendency,
variance, and correlation, the descriptive design was acceptable for this investigation Shajahan,
(2008).The study makes use of quantitative research to better understand the results Sekaran and
Bougie, (2010). A quantitative research approach was utilized to gather and examine data.
Quantitative research is the umbrella term for research ideas and procedures that produce
numerical, According to Dawson (2009), the quantitative strategy contacts more respondents and
does so much more quickly than the qualitative approach, whose interactions with respondents
often continue a little longer.

POPULATION OF THE STUDY

A population is the entire set of relevant units or elements that a researcher tends to study. It is a
set of all cases of interest. It is a collection of all interesting cases. The population for this study were
all full-time students in the Accra Technical University across all levels.
SOURCES OF DATA
This study made use of primary data for the purposes of achieving the research objectives. Primary
data is data that is collected from an original source whereas secondary data is data that is collected
from an already existing source.
Primary Data
Primary data are data collected from sources and used for the purpose it was collected. It was
gathered in order to analyze the effects of social media on students' academic performances at Accra
Technical University with an objective and realistic end goal in mind.
Secondary Data
Secondary data is data that is collected from already existing sources. This type of data is available
effortlessly, rapidly, and inexpensively. Secondary data will be collected using journals, textbooks,
handbooks, and manuals, review articles and editorials, literature reviews, informal discussions with
experts, colleagues, seminars and conferences as well as published guides.
Sample Size and Sampling Techniques
A sample, is a subset of respondents chosen from the target population. Sampling is frequently
more practical than examining the full population. It fulfills the objective of obtaining a result that is
representative of the entire population being sampled without going to the expense of asking
everyone, even if no sample can be guaranteed to be truly representative Fisher and Buglear, (2010).
The sample size for this study was made up of 100 full-time students in the Accra Technical University
across all levels. The simple random sampling technique was used. In this technique, each member
of the population has an equal chance of being selected as a subject. The entire process of sampling
is done in a single step with each subject selected independently of the other members of the
population. simple random sampling is the ease of assembling the sample. It is also considered a fair
way of selecting a sample from a given population since every member is given equal opportunities
of being selected.
DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENT
Cooper and Schindler (2008) defined data collection as the systematic and intentional acquisition of
information based on research factors. Surveys will be used to collect primary data. According to
Sansoni, et al., (2014), a questionnaire is a tool used to collect organized and specific data from
respondents. As defined ‘A questionnaire is simply a list of mimeographed or printed questions that
are completed by offering a respondent to give his opinion. A questionnaire is the main means of
collecting quantitative primary data. A questionnaire enables quantitative data to be collected in a
standardized way so that the data are internally consistent and coherent for analysis The researchers
will provide the respondent’s copies of the questionnaire. As the information on the questionnaire is
all about topics related to their studies, all responders are expected to cooperate as much as
possible. Therefore, enough time will be given to show participants how to check or mark their
agreement with the items on the study questionnaire.
DATA ANALYSIS
Data analysis is the process of reducing amassed data to a more manageable and practical size so
that a researcher may begin to discover trends or patterns, use statistical tools, and provide a
summary of the data. This allows a researcher to start looking for trends or patterns, utilize statistical
methods, and present a summary of the data. Microsoft Excel was used in analyzing data collected
and presented in tabular, graphical, and narrative forms.
