Every Week You Can Easel Paint

E
very week you can easel paint! Using an easel, a variety of media, some caution, and the right ideas can provide great benefit to your class week after week. Benefits of Easel Painting Easel painting is a very useful tool in teaching children the basics. A young preschooler can learn to print letters and wordseven his nameon the easel. Bible phrases can be printed on a dry erase easel, and preschoolers can copy the letters and words. Painting at an easel can provide confidence for preschoolers who may not have had the opportunity to work on their own in the classroom before. For some children the easel can be a way to help them talk in front of friends. If a child is shy, begin by inviting her to tell a friend about her artwork. The next time she completes art, encourage her to tell two friends. Continue adding friends as she develops her ability to express herself to others. Preschoolers love to create! When they use the easel, they can be artists with less mess and more fun. As they use their creative muscles, they are also experiencing brain development. A young childs creativity is high in early childhood and should be encouraged at every opportunity. Plan opportunities for preschoolers to explore, experiment, and discover what they enjoy. Materials to Consider Many different kinds of easels are available. You want to make sure that the easel(s) for your classroom are the right size for your children. Some easels provide a dry erase marker board which can be used to add

to the fun. Easel paper can be purchased in rolls and sheets and clipped to the easel. If easel paper is not available, use 9-by-18-inch sheets of construction paper. You can buy inexpensive art supplies from any dollar store or from the same company who makes the easel. Check your Sunday School resource room for needed supplies. Save old shirts from home for painting smocks. In addition to artwork, you can use the easel for games or for teaching the Bible story. An easel can also be a place to utilize a felt board for teaching and for preschooler hands-on learning. A large variety of materials can be used with the easel. Make using the easel unique and fun each week by changing the materials and media. Some easel boards are magnetic, which means you can use magnets and have preschoolers create words or pictures with them. (If the easel is not magnetic, you can place a metal cookie sheet on the easel.) Guide the children to spell their names or words from the Bible story or Bible phrase. You can provide preschoolers with many options for creating artwork such as chalk drawing on black construction paper. Children also enjoy using markers, paint,

and crayons to create pictures and words. Provide different sizes of brushes for boys and girls to useeven large brushes and rollers. They will also enjoy using different types of brushes such as sponges, cotton swabs, potatoes, vegetables, bubble wrap, or sandpaper. You can provide different kinds of painttempera, watercolor, or poster paint. Preschoolers can paint glue on their paper, then sprinkle the glue with sand. Consider painting with flavored gelatin to help preschoolers use the sense of smell that God gave them. Occasionally, you will want to allow for finger painting. Using different media helps preschoolers see how different shapes and textures make different pictures. Minimize the Mess Keep the easel and painting contained to one area. That area could have a colorful drop cloth as a floor covering. This substitute carpet need not be expensive. Pick up several party tablecloths at the local dollar store, or cover the area with some used bedsheets that are still in good condition. Provide smocks or art shirts such as usable button-up shirts to cover preschoolers Sunday clothes. Use the tray on the easel to contain the paint. Make sure that preschoolers are being monitored With a little bit of planning and practice, you will discover the awesome experience of the classroom easel. Be ready for your preschoolers this week; bring out the easel and create!

Ways to Include the Easel Every Week Some preschoolers may want to use the easel to pretend they are in school. You can use this to reinforce the lesson focus or Bible phrase for the day, allowing the preschooler to teach part of the lesson. An easel can represent a store window as children pretend to be community helpers in the grocery store. Consider picking up a used frame from a rummage sale and each week putting the artwork of the easel artist in the frame. Make sure each preschoolers art is displayed in the frame at some point during the year. An easel can also be used as a prop for story time, representing a building, a wall, or even a tent (by placing a tablecloth or sheet over the easel). This can be a great illustration while teaching about some of the Bible people who lived in tents in Bible times.

as they create their masterpieces. Always keep a sponge and other cleaning materials nearby to help with spills and accidents. If possible, allow the children to assist in cleaning up (even though it might take longer); this will help instill in them the value of cooperation and responsibility.

A Strong Foundation for Easter

R. Scott Wiley

S
everal children stacked and arranged blocks to create a road. Jessie pointed to a picture lying nearby. Thats Jesus, she said. Jesus loved and helped His friends, I said. Jessie began to sing Jesus Loves Me. A few other children joined in as they continued to build. Jessie and her friends have heard stories and sung songs about Jesus each time they came to church. They are developing concepts about who Jesus is and what He did. Teaching preschoolers is like constructing a building. We must create a strong base, a strong foundation, for future understanding. As we help boys and girls begin to understand more about God and Jesus, they establish a strong base on which others can build for future understanding. We must guide young children to understand fully the basic concepts before moving to more complex ideas and truths. At Easter, we can build foundations about Jesus and His love, guiding preschoolers to have a secure foundation for further understandings of the message of Easter. To form an understanding of who Jesus is, preschoolers explore Bible stories that tell about things Jesus did and ways Jesus showed His love. Threes, 4s, and pre-kindergartners can talk about what they know about Jesus. They can recall Bible stories about Jesus and explain what Jesus did. They can grow in their understanding that Jesus showed love in different ways and that Jesus loves all people. As they repeat Bible phrases and sing songs about Jesus love, boys and girls can develop a deeper understanding that Jesus loves them. Teachers and parents can use Easter as a time to focus on the love of Jesus, especially that Jesus loves each child individually and specifically.

This leader guide has two teaching plans for Easter. Jesus Is Alive, the resurrection story, begins on page 32. Jesus Washed His Helpers Feet, the story of Jesus serving His disciples, begins on page 36. Which session should you choose? Think about the children in your class. Older 4s and pre-kindergartners, especially those who have attended Sunday School consistently throughout their preschool years, usually have a broader understanding of Jesus. These preschoolers may have a good foundation for the resurrection story; teachers can build on previous understanding and guide them to learn more about Jesus. Threes and younger 4s, as well as children who have begun attending church recently, may not yet have as strong a foundational understanding of Jesus. The story of Jesus and His disciples would help them develop more concepts about Jesus and His love, strengthening their spiritual foundations. As you build spiritual foundations, remember that each child is an individual. Each child develops in his own way and at his own rate. Let the child be your guide as you teach. Encourage him to ask questions. Give brief answers and allow him to ask for more as he chooses. Knowing each child allows you to help develop his individual spiritual growth. Whichever session you choose, you can help preschoolers think about Jesus, talk about His love, and connect Jesus with Easter. What an exciting opportunity to strengthen a childs foundational understanding of Jesus!

God Made Day and Night

(Genesis 1:1-8,14-19)

Bible Truth

God made daytime and nighttime.

Life Application

I will learn that God made the sun for daytime and the moon and stars for nighttime.

As you prepare to tell the Bible story, ask the boys and girls whether they have seen a starry night. Some preschoolers may not have seen a star-studded sky. Ask them who made the stars. Share enthusiastically that God created the daytime and nighttime. Before there was anything else in the world, there was God. Darkness was everywhere. God had a wonderful plan to make the world. God said, Let there be light. Suddenly there was light! God called the light day. He called the darkness night. God made the bright, warm sun to shine in the daytime. God made the moon and many twinkling stars to shine in the nighttime sky. God looked at what He had made. He thought it was all very good.

Repeat the Bible phrase God made the sun, moon, and stars. Genesis 1:16. Say it again and add these actions: sun (raise arms over your head, forming a circle), moon (clasp hands together to form a ball), and stars (open and close hands, making twinkling stars). Invite preschoolers to repeat it with you.

Say a Bible Phrase

D. Create stars with play dough. Make stars with play dough, using cookie cutters if available. Preschoolers may prefer to roll out the play dough and draw stars using a craft stick. Ask them to share experiences of looking at the stars or the moon. Ask: Who made the moon and stars? Pause for their answers.

Say: We can thank God for making the daytime and nighttime. Ask for volunteers to pray.

Invite preschoolers to choose a Bible-learning activity and then move to other activities as their interests change. As they work, remind them that God made the sun for the day and the moon and stars for night. A. Make a day and night picture. Provide crayons and a paper plate for each preschooler. Invite him to draw something he sees or does during the day or night. The front of the plate could be a day scene with the back being a night picture. Tape a 4-inch yarn loop to the plate, forming a hanger. B. Play a daytime and nighttime game. Tape four pieces of construction paper to the floor, using two black pieces (night) and two yellow pieces (day). Invite preschoolers to take turns jumping onto one piece of paper. Say: God made the daytime (or nighttime). What do you like to do during the day (or at night)? C. Dress the dolls. Dress the dolls for either daytime or nighttime activities. Preschoolers may choose to sing a song or tell a story as they role-play.

Play in Bible-Learning Activities

Say: Lets sing a song about the stars God made. Open and close your hands like twinkling stars. Sing (tune Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star): Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder who made you. God Made Land and Plants

(Genesis 1:9-13)

Bible Truth

God made the land and all kinds of plants.

Life Application

I will hear that God made land and all the plants and trees that grow.

Bible Phrase

Tell preschoolers that God had a special plan when He created the world. Every detail was important! Remind them that some food comes from plants. Ask: What is your favorite fruit or vegetable? Invite the boys and girls to listen for other kinds of plants in the Bible story. God was making a beautiful world. God had made daytime and nighttime. Water was everywhere. God said, Let there be dry ground. The water was put into lakes, rivers, and oceans. God called the dry ground land. God looked at the land and water He had made. God thought it was good. Then God said, Let all kinds of plants begin to grow on the land. And that is what happened. There were tiny plants like grass and big plants like trees. Plants with fruit, vegetables, and flowers began to grow. God made the plants with seed so that more plants could grow. God looked at the trees and plants He had made. God made every kind of fish, bird, and animal.

Life Application

I will learn that God made all the birds, fish, and animals.

Open your Bible to Genesis 1. Introduce the story by saying that God had created a beautiful world. He made the sun, moon, and stars, along with plants, trees, and flowers. The Bible also tells us that God made animals. Ask preschoolers to listen for different kinds of animals God created. God had made a beautiful world. He made the sun, moon, and stars, the water and dry land, and plants of all kinds. Then God made animals to live in the waterall kinds of fish, turtles, whales, frogs, and starfish. Next God made birds to fly in the skylittle birds and big birds, cardinals, robins, eagles, and hummingbirds. Then God made animals that walk or crawl on the landlions, monkeys, giraffes, zebras, lizards, horses, cows, dogs, and cats. Special Jesus
(Matthew 21:1-11,14-16)

Bible Truth

People knew Jesus was special.

Life Application

I will discover that I can thank God for Jesus.

Ask whether anyone has seen a parade. Say: Many children and grown-ups were excited that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. They knew Jesus was special. Listen for some of the things the people did. Jesus and His helpers were going to Jerusalem. Jesus sent two of His helpers to bring Him a young donkey and its mother. When the helpers brought the donkeys to Jesus, they spread their coats on the young donkeys back. Jesus rode the donkey into Jerusalem. Along the way, people spread their coats and palm branches across the road. The people knew Jesus was special. They shouted, Hosanna! Hosanna! Jesus rode the donkey to the church. There He made blind people see and sick people well. Children at the church were happy to see Jesus. They shouted, Hosanna! Hosanna. They thanked God for Jesus. C. Build a church (temple). Using blocks, build a church together. Talk about what Jesus did at the church (temple) and how the children thanked God for Jesus. Ask preschoolers to recall some of the things they did this morning to thank God for Jesus. D. Walk the Bible phrase. Divide the Bible phrase Thank You, God, for Jesus into three segments. Print each segment on a different color of construction paper. Securely tape each segment, in the correct order, to the floor, leaving a 3-foot gap between each segment. Read each segment as you step on the paper. Say each segment with each preschooler as she steps on it.

Invite the preschoolers to choose an activity. They can move among activities if they wish. As they work, watch for opportunities to mention that Jesus is special and we can thank God for Him. A. Play out the Bible story. Say the following, leading in the motions. Happy children lining the path, (Stand up.) Waiting to see Jesus pass. (Hand to forehead, look around.) There He comes, His helpers, too. (Point.) People laid down palm branches. So can you! (Move hands as if laying down a palm branch.) Shouting, Hosanna! (Shout: Hosanna!) Calling His name. (Say: Jesus!) Just like those children, we can do the same! (Shout: Hosanna.) B. Make a palm branch. Provide craft sticks, green construction paper, glue sticks, and child-size scissors. Ask preschoolers: What did the people cut and spread to show that Jesus was special? Invite them to make a small palm branch by cutting or tearing strips of paper and gluing them to the craft stick.

Jesus Is Alive!
(John 20:1-18)

Bible Truth

Jesus is alive.

Life Application Bible Phrase

As you share the Bible story, be sensitive to preschoolers life experiences, such as a relatives recent death. Focus on the resurrection. Ask: Can you think of good news that makes you happy? Why was Mary happy? Early in the morning, Mary walked sadly to the place where Jesus was buried. Jesus had died on a cross. When she arrived at the tomb, the big, heavy stone had been rolled away from the door. Jesus was not inside! Mary ran from the tomb. Mary brought Peter and John back to the tomb. They looked inside, but they did not see Jesus anywhere! Jesus was not there. The two men went home. Mary stayed near the tomb crying. Why are you crying? she heard someone ask. Mary did not know that the man speaking to her was Jesus. Then He spoke her name. Mary, He said. Mary knew that the man was Jesus! Jesus told Mary to go tell His helpers that she had seen Him. Mary rushed to tell Jesus helpers that Jesus was alive!

For most preschoolers, this has been a busy morning. Family traditions or conversations with other preschoolers may distract from the real Easter story. If necessary, acknowledge the fun they have had, and gently redirect conversations toward the good news that Jesus is alive. Be enthusiastic as you explain the activities they may choose. A. Make a megaphone. Gather crayons and large paper plates. Make one slit in each plate from the edge to the center. Lead preschoolers to decorate the plates. Show them how to roll a plate into a megaphone. Say: Sometimes people use a megaphone when talking to large crowds so that everyone can hear them. Invite them to listen for the difference when they say Jesus is alive through the megaphone and without it. B. Toss a beanbag. Ask preschoolers to form a circle. Stand in the middle of the group. As you gently toss the beanbag, say: Jesus is alive! Ask each preschooler to repeat the phrase before tossing the beanbag back to you. Continue until each preschooler has had a turn. C. Work puzzles. Bible Truth

Jesus loved His friends.

Life Application

Your actions, along with your words, will help communicate Gods love today. Ask: Can you think of someone who loves you? Allow volunteers to name a person who loves them. Say: Jesus loved His friends, and He loves you, too. Please listen for a way that Jesus showed love. Jesus was eating dinner with His helpers. He got up from the table, wrapped a towel around His waist, and poured water into a large bowl. Jesus knew His friends feet were tired and dusty from walking all day. He knew the cool water would feel good on their feet. Jesus began to wash His friends feet. He dried their feet with the towel. Peter did not understand why Jesus was washing feet, but he let Jesus wash his feet. After Jesus had washed each helpers feet, He said, When I washed your feet, I was showing that I love you. Older preschoolers may want to print the Bible phrase on their pictures and send them to friends. Allow them to help with the writing. Place the pictures in envelopes for their parents to mail. B. Whisper a message. Sitting in a circle, whisper Jesus loves you to the next person. Continue until all the preschoolers have heard and repeated the message. Repeat the game, whispering Jesus is my friend. C. Search for hearts. Cut out 12 hearts, or enough for each child to have one; print Jesus loves on each heart. Jesus Helped 10 Men

(Luke 17:11-19)

Bible Truth

Jesus made sick people well.

Life Application

For some preschoolers, achieving the impossible can only be done by fantasy superheroes. Emphasize that Jesus did things that only He could do. Ask: Who made the sick people well? What did Jesus do? One day Jesus was walking to Jerusalem. Along the way, He met 10 men who had sores all over their bodies. The sick men could not live near healthy people. They had to leave their families and move outside of town. When the 10 men saw Jesus, they called, Jesus! Please help us! Jesus told the sick men to go into town and show themselves to the church helpers. As the 10 sick men walked toward town, the sores on their bodies went away! Jesus had made them well! Only one man who saw that he was well came back to Jesus and thanked Him. Jesus had made 10 men well. But He was glad this one man had stopped to thank Him.

Repetition will help preschoolers learn todays phrase Jesus helped sick people (Luke 7:21). Say the phrase for them, asking them to join you. After they are familiar with it, ask for volunteers to help lead the group as you say it again. They might want to wave their hands (like music directors) back and forth for each word. Praise individuals as well as the group for learning the Bible phrase.

Say a Bible Phrase

C. Count with blocks. Help a preschooler count 10 blocks to stack together or line up. Ask him to select one block at a time and count blocks as he builds. As you reach 10, remind him that Jesus helped 10 sick men. Help him recall the Bible story. D. Take care of sick dolls. Gather homeliving items, such as baby dolls, baby bottles, baby clothes, and blankets. As preschoolers take care of sick dolls, talk about how Jesus made sick people well.

Allow volunteers to pray, but do not pressure any child to pray. Thank God for the things Jesus did.

Pray

Be ready to assist preschoolers with activities that may be difficult. Do not let these skills become your focus or take over the task. It is more important to continue Bible learning. Praise children for their efforts! A. Cut with scissors. Provide construction paper, blunt-tipped scissors, and glue sticks. Invite preschoolers to cut paper into 10 pieces of any shape. They may wish to glue the shapes onto another piece of paper to create a picture. Other preschoolers may simply want to continue cutting paper. Comment on what they can do. As they work, ask them to recall what Jesus did that only He could do. B. Tell the story with a finger play. Have fun as you lead the motions. Say: Ten men outside of town (Hold up 10 fingers.) Were sick and feeling down. (Look sad.) Then Jesus came their way. (Clap hands while saying these words.) And He made them well that day. (Hold up 10 fingers.) All 10 men hurried away. (Put hands behind back.) Only one returned to say, Thank You, Jesus! (Hold up one finger.)

Tell the story for newcomers, emphasizing that Jesus showed love to His friends. Peter, John, and some of their friends had fished all night. They had not caught any fish. In the morning, a man on the shore called to them, Friends, did you catch any fish? No, they answered. Throw your net on the right side of the boat, said the man. When the fishermen did that, they could not lift their fishing net because it was so full of fish! Then John shouted, That man is Jesus! Peter was excited. He jumped in the water and swam to shore. When the others came to the shore, they saw that Jesus had built a fire. Fish were cooking over the fire, and there was bread. Jesus said to the men, Come and have breakfast. Miriam Helped Her Family

(Exodus 2:1-10)

Bible Truth

Family members help one another.

Life Application

I will discover ways I can help my family members.

Ask: Who has a baby brother or sister? Do you help your parents take care of the baby? What are some of the things you do? After praising them for helping at home, say: Listen for ways that Moses family helped him. Miriams family had a new baby boy. Miriam helped her mother take care of the baby. The king did not want baby boys to live. So Miriams mother thought of a way to keep the baby safe. Miriams mother covered a basket with sticky tar. Gently she laid the baby in the basket and placed it in the tall grass near the river. Miriam stayed nearby to watch her baby brother. The kings daughter saw the basket. She opened it and saw the baby. Miriam asked the kings daughter, Do you want me to get someone to take care of the baby for you? Yes, answered the kings daughter. Miriam ran and got her mother. Take care of this baby for me, the kings daughter said. Miriams mother was happy to take care of her own baby. When he was older, the kings daughter named him Moses.

Encourage preschoolers to work together to copy that pattern or create a new one. Preschoolers may line up the blocks or stack them to create a new design. Steer conversation to ways family members help one another.

Pray, thanking God that family members can help one another.

Be sensitive to special family situations. If you are unsure about special needs, ask general questions and listen carefully for the answers. Use conversation about the Bible story to remind preschoolers that family members help one another. Encourage preschoolers to choose their activities; allow them to change activities according to their interests. A. Make helper coupons. Cut sheets of construction paper into quarters. Help preschoolers think of tasks they can do at home. Encourage them to draw pictures of ways they will help, using crayons or markers. Provide envelopes for them to decorate. Fold the coupons to fit inside the envelopes. Label the envelopes Helper Coupons. B. Make play dough cookies. Make pretend cookies with play dough. If available, use cookie cutters and rolling pins. Some preschoolers may prefer to pat out the play dough by hand. Listen to their stories about helping in the kitchen at home. Compliment them on helping their families. Abram Solved a Problem

(Genesis 13:1-12,14-18)

Bible Truth

Family members get along and work together.

Life Application

I will think about ways to get along with my family members.

Open your Bible to Genesis. Ask: How do you work together in your family? Listen carefully to responses. Say: In our Bible story, Abram and Lot had a problem. Listen to find out what the problem was and how Abram took care of it. Abram had a large family, many animals, and helpers to take care of his animals. Lot lived with his uncle Abram. Lot had a family, many animals, and helpers, too. Lots helpers argued with Abrams helpers because there was not enough grass and water for all the animals. Abram wanted everyone to get along with one another. So Abram talked with Lot about the problem. Abram and Lot stood on a hill to look at all the land around them. Abram told Lot to choose the land where he wanted to live. Lot moved his family, helpers, and animals to the grassy land by the river. Abram moved his family, helpers, and animals to another part of the land. Then they both had plenty of grass for their animals.

ETC Teacher: These two pages contain extra ideas to use during the month: finger plays, songs, active games, and quiet activities. They require little or no preparation. Use them as needed to fill transition times or when you need a quick change of pace.

Tip: Teaching Preschoolers That God Made the World

What you believe about how our world came to be influences every other decision you make. Knowing that you are made by God gives purpose and meaning to life. This month, you will have the opportunity to introduce to preschoolers the story of how God made the world. Throughout the sessions, affirm that God made the entire world, including man. Rejoice that God also planned for families. Open your Bible often to Genesis, pointing out the Scripture passages. Let your enthusiasm and thankfulness overflow.

by adding leaves, fruit, flowers, animals, and birds. Ask: Did you see trees on your way to church? God made the trees.

Sing About Gods World

Sing the following words (tune The Farmer in the Dell). Add stanzas as children suggest different things God made. When you reach the Heigh ho the derry-o line (line 3), children can make sounds and do motions to represent the things God made. God made the kitty cats. God made the kitty cats. Meow, meow, meow! God made the kitty cats. Sing about other things God made. For example God made the great lions. . . . (Make roaring sounds.) . . . God made the woodpeckers. . . . Peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck. . . .

Make Handprint Trees

Gather crayons, washable markers, construction paper, and a pencil for the teacher. Turn the paper vertically to allow for drawing a tree. Ask the preschooler to place his hand and wrist on the paper with his fingers spread apart, making tree branches. Draw around his hand and wrist. Preschoolers can complete the picture

Open the Bible to Genesis 1 and summarize the biblical account. Ask questions as you read: What are some of the things God made? On your way to church, what things did you see that God made?

Paint a Family Picture

Provide watercolors, paintbrushes, cups of water, and painting smocks or shirts. Print the preschoolers name on her paper before she begins. Ask: Who made people? Say: God made you and your family, too. Would you like to paint a picture of your family? Some preschoolers may prefer to paint their house or something that reminds them of their family. Ask them to tell you about their paintings.

Luke Elliot McLamb is 4 years old. He lives with his family in Lima, Peru, where his mom and dad are missionaries. Lukey loves his family and likes to do things with them. He likes to play soccer with his brothers. He also likes to play superheroes! But more than anything, he loves to give hugs and kisses to his mom, dad, and baby sister because he loves them. Lukey also likes to go to church where he can sing and play the xylophone. Playing music at church is fun! In Lima, Peru, Lukey McLamb helps his mom and dad tell people about God. Lukey says, I want to tell about God because I love Him!

Build Animals with Blocks

Gather wooden or interlocking blocks and the Read to Me Bible for Kids. Open the Bible to the picture God Made People in Genesis. Ask: Who made people? Who made the animals? What types of animals did God create? Invite preschoolers to build animals with their blocks. Instead of guessing what animal a child made, say: You did a good job. Please tell me about it. Never belittle a childs creation. If you must correct a factual error, do it gently!

Make Paper Plate Flowers or a Sun

Provide crayons, child-size scissors, small paper plates, glue, paintbrushes, and construction paper in a variety of colors. Pour a small amount of glue on a paper plate; use paintbrushes to apply the glue. Preschoolers may want to color the plate (flower center). Invite the children to cut colorful petals and glue them around edges of the plate. Preschoolers learn by doing things themselvesthe petals do not have to be uniform. Assist only if needed. As an alternative, make paper plate suns. Say: God made the sun for the daytime. He made the moon and stars for the nighttime. Invite preschoolers to color a small paper plate to look like the sun. Cut yellow construction paper strips for the sunrays. Help them glue the rays to the back of the plate.

Play I Spy
Look out a window or find a garden spot or aquarium in your church. Play I Spy, giving clues about things you see that God made. If you are not able to see nature, walk around the Sunday School room, giving clues about items in the room that are colors that God made. For example, God made the color red. I spy something in our room that is red and round and bounces.

Tell Me About Jesus:
What a privilege to tell preschoolers about things Jesus did! Some children will be hearing these Bible stories for the first time. Be enthusiastic. Hold your Bible open to the passage as you teach. Rejoice as you and they thank God for Jesus!

How to Use ETC

ETC Coordinator: Make copies of the front and back of this monthly page. Mail them to each ETC teacher along with the appropriate weekly session page(s). ETC Teacher: These two pages contain extra ideas to use during the month: finger plays, songs, active games, and quiet activities. They require little or no preparation. Use them as needed to fill transition times or when you need a quick change of pace.

Tip: Teach That Jesus Is Real

A preschoolers world often includes cartoon characters and imaginary friends. As you talk about Jesus, help boys and girls understand that He is real. Use age-appropriate words and concepts. As your church reaches out to your community, you will meet preschoolers without any biblical foundation. Intercede for each one, along with his family. Remember that your actions, along with your words, communicate Gods love. Your concern can make a difference in their lives and in their homes.

Make a Banner
Tape a large sheet of paper to the wall. Set crayons or washable markers on the floor nearby. Print Jesus Is Special in large letters in the center of the banner. Ask preschoolers to decorate around the words. Hang the banner in your room.

Play a Matching Game

Use 10 index cards to make a matching game. Make five pairs of cards. If possible, use a different color marker for each pair: two cards showing the number 10; two cards showing the word ten; two cards showing 10 triangles; two cards showing 10 circles; and two cards showing 10 stick men. Say: Ten men had sores on their bodies. They called out to Jesus. He made all 10 men well. Show the various representations of 10 on the pairs of cards. Ask: Would you like to play a matching game? Place the cards facedown for older preschoolers and faceup for younger children. Watch as the preschoolers take turns attempting to make matches.

Build a Block Tower

Print on a piece of paper or an index card each word of the Bible verse Jesus is alive! Matthew 28:7. Tape the words to the wall, in order, at different heights. Put wooden or interlocking blocks near the words. Invite preschoolers to build block towers until they reach each word. Interconnecting blocks may be easier for younger preschoolers to use. Read the verse aloud. Say: This good news made Mary and Jesus helpers happy. It makes me happy, too.

Search High and Low

Cut in half several sheets of different-colored construction paper. Using masking tape, tape a half sheet of each color high on the wall (within a preschoolers reach) and the other one low on the wall. Scatter the colors around the wall so matching colors are not close to each other. Say: When Jesus went to church, He saw a woman who could not stand tall and straight. She could not reach high. Jesus made the woman well. Ask: Can you bring me two pieces of paper that are the same color? You may have to reach high and reach low to get them. After all the colors have been found, ask preschoolers to tape them to the wall and play again.

What Do I Hear?
Gather a variety of rhythm instruments, if available. If you do not have rhythm instruments, improvise. Collect two plastic dishes, two blocks, and two pairs of childsize scissors to tap together; ruffle the pages of a thick book; plan to clap hands or use other body instruments. Say: Today, we will play a listening game. Listen carefully to each instrument. Play each instrument, making the sound several times. Then place it in front of you. Ask preschoolers to close their eyes as you play one instrument. Say: Now open your eyes. Which instrument did you hear? For older preschoolers, play a very simple rhythm and ask a preschooler to copy the pattern with the same instrument. Try a 4-beat rhythm and repeat it a couple of times.

Sid likes to go with his parents when they do ministry with South Asians. He likes to pray with them and play with the other children. When they have prayer with the people, they play Indian music. Even though he lives in California, Sid has visited relatives in England and India! In India, he saw children who did not have enough food or clothes. Sid wants us to pray that God will provide for those children. He also wants us to pray for his parents as they tell people about Jesus.

Play the Go, Stop Game

Tape a piece of red and a piece of green construction paper together, back-toback. Place two strips of masking tape on the floor for a start and finish line. Ask: When someone is driving, what should he do when he sees a red traffic light? What happens if the light is green? Listen to the responses. Say: If you see the green paper, start walking. If you see the red paper, stop. Allow preschoolers to take turns holding the sign and turning it from red to green.

Draw a Meal
Provide large paper plates, crayons, and markers. Say: The Bible tells us about some times when Jesus ate with His friends. Its fun to eat a meal with friends. Ask preschoolers to tell their favorite foods. Listen to their responses and invite them to draw food on their plate. Some children may want to make more than one food plate. Do not try to name the food they have drawn. Instead, ask them to tell you about it.

May 2012
My Family:
This month, preschoolers will learn about members of Bible families who loved and helped one another and worked together and helped others. They will think about ways their family members can relate to one another and live together happily.

Tip: Know Your Preschoolers

Remember that some of your preschoolers may come from nontraditional families. Some live with only one parent. Others are being reared by their grandparents. Be sensitive to those needs. Gently redirect childrens conversations when necessary. Seek to know each preschooler. Be aware of events happening in his life. Even a joyous occasion, such as the birth of a new baby, can create stress and changes in behavior. Be flexible. Praise often. Pray for each preschooler, along with his family.

Sing and Play Instruments

Gather rhythm instruments or two wooden blocks per child. Invite preschoolers to join you on the floor or at a table. Tell the children to practice playing the rhythm instruments as you singthey can clap blocks together or rub them back and forth in rhythm, or they can play body instruments, patting shoulders, knees, or hands. Point in a Bible to 1 John 4:7. Say: The Bible tells us to love one another. As they play their instruments, sing to the chorus of the song Jesus Loves Me: Love one another. Love one another. Love one another. The Bible tells us so.

Roll Play Dough Letters

Print the beginning letter of each preschoolers name on an index card. Make it large and blocky. Offer several different colors of play dough. Show the preschoolers how to roll the play dough into ropes of various lengths. Show them how to lay the rolled segments on top of the printed letter that begins their name. Older children may choose to flatten the play dough and use a craft stick to print their initials. Say: Your family gave you a special name.

Shop for Groceries

Cut rectangles from green construction paper to resemble money. Make a grocery store counter on a table using food items from the homeliving area. Say: The Bible says, Work together happily. Families can work together when they go grocery shopping. Ask: Do you go grocery shopping with your family? How do you help? Pretend to go grocery shopping. Preschoolers can take turns being the checkout clerk.

Create a Paper Plate Award

Cut 2-inch strips of red and blue construction paper, making a point at one end of each strip. Gather small paper plates, crayons, and glue sticks. Say: We give awards to people to thank them for doing things. You can make an award for someone in your family. Print on each plate a message such as You are special! or I love you! Give each preschooler time to decorate one or more plates. Glue two paper ribbons on the back of each plate. Mention the Bible phrase Love one another (1 John 4:7).

Work Puzzles Together

Gather family theme puzzles, avoiding those with fantasy characters. As preschoolers work the puzzles, talk about special family times. Ask: What do you enjoy doing with your family? Say a simple thank-you prayer: Thank You, God, for (childs name) family. For older preschoolers, put the pieces of two puzzles in a bag. Ask them to draw the pieces out one at a time and sort them by puzzle before working the puzzles. If this is too difficult, give clues about which puzzle the piece belongs with.

Kids and Missions

4-year-old Nathan Hodgins lives with his family in Asuncion, Paraguay, in South America. Paraguay is very hot most of the time, so Nathan enjoys going swimming to cool off. He also likes to ride his bike, play with play dough, and play cars and trains with his older siblings. Nathan attends Pre-K in Asuncion. On Sundays, Nathan attends two different churches. Both churches are small, and they have their church services under the trees! Nathans parents work with Deaf people (that means people who cannot hear), so at church they sign songs in Paraguayan Sign Language. Pray for Nathan and his family as they share the love of Jesus with the Deaf people of Paraguay.

Finger Play: God Gave Us Families

Ask each preschooler to think of a chore he can help with at home and which he can pantomime. Some families are large. (Extend armshands far apart.) Some families are small. (Clap hands together.) Some families are short. (Squat and measure a short distance from the floor with a hand.) Some families are tall. (Stand on tiptoe and reach high.) God gave us parents; we do what they say (Pantomime the chore he thought of.) Our own special families to love every day. (Hug yourself.)

Make a Family Chain

Provide crayons, tape or glue sticks, and 2-inch wide strips of various colors of construction paper. Help preschoolers print the name of a family member on each strip. Use the given name for siblings and words such as mother, daddy, granddaddy, or grandmother for older relatives. Some preschoolers may prefer to draw pictures. After completing the strips, help preschoolers form a chain by looping each piece through the previous link and taping or gluing the ends together. Continue until all the links are connected. Say: Im glad God planned for families.
