Introduction
I have overall 10 years’ experience in HSE field in Oil and Gas Drilling industry. In my whole career I have only
work with two organizations; My current employer is CCDC and the previous organization where I served is
Pakistan Oil Fields POL.
PASS – Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep – It is a device which tell you Air Pressure is, if man don’t move then alarm starts
First Aid 3Ps – Preserve Life, Prevent Deterioration, Promote Recovery
Crane, Forklift, Man Riding Basket (Man Lift - Basket height is 3 to 4 feet)
Fire Triangle = Oxygen + Fuel + Heat
Oxygen PPM = 19 % to 23.5 % . Nitrogen PPM = 69 %
Fire Extinguishers = Gas CO2 (for Electrical), DCP (Combustion material like wood, paper), Fume (Water 97%+ AFFF fume
3% – Fuel like Oil, Diesel, Petrol fire)
Fire Extinguishers parts = Hose, Liver, Safety Pin, Cylinder
H2S (Colorless, Rotten Egg small=1PPM, Smell offensive, Heavier than Air, Poisonous Gas, Highly Explosive, Flammable,
Can Kill sense of smell, Dangerous to Alcohol, Soluble in water and Drilling Fluid)
H2S poisons comes after Salide (world most high Poison)
H2S names Stink Damp, Rotten Egg Gas, Swamp Gas, Dihydrogen Sulfide, Hepatic Gas, Zwavelwaters off, Hydrogen
Sulfide, Sour Crude/Sour Gas, Sewer Gas, Hyrosulphuric Acid, and Sulphureted Hydrogen
Buddy System for H2S
H2S - 5 PPM (easily detectable by smell),
PEL is 10 PPM (eye burning can be quite– alarm starts – Worker can work for 8 hours),
STEL is 15 PPM (eye burning – alarm starts + Light cannot stop – 15 minutes work + 2 hours break = 1 hour per day work
is allowed)
IDLH – greater than 50 PPM and equal to 100 PPM
H2S LEL = 4.3% (43000 PPM) UEL = 46%
H2S Conditions: Green – Safe < 10 PPM , Yellow – Moderate = 10 to 15 PPM , Red – Dangerous > 15 PPM
H2s concentration: 0.005 – 0.13 PPM (minimum odour limit)
H2S Detectors: (1) Sense of Smell (Nose), (2) Lead Acetate, Coated Strips, (3) Colorimeter Tubes (NIOSH Certified)
(4) H2S Detectors
(4.1) FIXED at Sealer (near to main sealer/well dig, Floor bottom and Belly Bossam (Shale Shaker – return line for mud
from Well).
(4.2) Portable Detectors
(4.2.1) Personal (with uniform)
(4.2.2) Multi Gas Detector use to check H2S + O2 + LEL (Methane CH4) + Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Detector Company Name is Ventis MX4, Drager
(4.2.3) Wireless Gas Detector (report to office – these are installed at locations where worker only visits to work at; and
no person is appointed to watch location)
H2S is burned through Flyer (120 meters) H2S + O2 + Burn = SO2 (Sulphure Dioxide)
How H2S effect Individuals: (1) Time Duration (2) Frequency (3) Intensity - in PPM (4) Individual Susceptibility
SO2 is Dangerous for eyes, First Rain Drops can effect skin, Soluble in Water and pollute under Earth water.
SCBA at Rig Sites (total = 12): Rig Floor = 5, Mud Tank = 4 to 5, Mud Logging Unit = 1, Geologist Unit = 1
SCBA at Camp Area (total = 7): HSE Office = 1, Rig Manager/Tool Pusher= 1, Company Man/Mentor/Client Supervisor= 1,
Geologist Office= 1, Meeting Room = 2, Drilling Engineer = 1
SCBA at Store (2 to 5)
Drill: As soon as possible, 5 minutes to reach at Master / Assembly point by walking, not by running. POB/head count.
Visitor and workers stand in separate line
Drill Types: H2S/Gas, BOP/Well Kick, Fire, Man Down, Emergency/Threat Drill
First Aid Box at Floor, Mud Tank, Kitchen, Camp area, etc.
First Aid 3Ps – Preserve Life, Prevent Deterioration, Promote Recovery
Artificial Breathing process/ Artificial Respiration procedure (CPR - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation):
Scene observe (gas or electric shock), call casualty person, move person from shoulder or rub chest. Call help 991 or Rig
Medic,
If a pulse is present but no respiration, give 1 rescue breath every 5 seconds and recheck pulse every 2 minutes. If there
is no pulse, start the CPR cycle of 30 compressions, 2 breaths.
30 times press/thrust at man chest center, twice at air pump with mouth direct connection
Man Height (6 feet) + Lane yard – Safety Rope (6 feet) + Shock Observer (2 feet) + Safety Margin (4 feet) = 18 to 20 feet
Lane yard – Safety Rope is hocked up with Fall Raster
Anchorage - Anchor point = Person Weight (e.g. 70 Kg) * 4 = 280 to 300 Kg
3 Contacts (3 Body Parts – 2 hands and one foot)
Counter Weight (350 Kg - Vertical Safety line to ride upstairs on ladder, Derrick ladder)
Chemical Hazards type (1) Acute (2) Chronic
Excavation: Man made or machine made dig, pit: After four feet it is converted into Confined space
Confined space at rig site is Mud Tank and Sealer area.
Waste Pit – Board (for disposing the cutting)
Escape Line (To safely move Derrick man from monkey board (120 meter height) by hock and break process)
Brass Tools are used in Oil & Gas Drilling Industry because these don’t produce sparks
Present Color Code (e.g. current is White color; red color means cannot be used. It is used for ligting gears like Shackle,
slings, Web slings)
Quarantine Box (keeps red color code tools)
Drilling Consoles (1) Cyber Control Chair – Touch Screen, (2) Joy Stick
PPEs: Safety Shows, Coverall, Gloves, Goggles, Helmet, Face protector, Long rubber shoes, Face Mask – when mixing
on Costic soda or any chemical,
PTW issued for tasks like:
Hydro Test:
Pressure testing,
Rig up time to test high pressure lines (like Mud lines,
Shel shaker
Sand trap
