Rural vs urban living
Are you a city person, or do you prefer to be out in the countryside? We all have our preferences of where to
live, and we often change our minds as we get older, but there are definitely types of people who prefer one to
the other. So, there is actually no correct answer about where the ideal place to live is, as everyone has their
own idea of what is best. To help you out if you’re facing the choice of where to move to, let’s look at some
of the pros and cons of urban and rural living.
Life in the city has many advantages because everything is within easy reach by car or public transport.
Schools, shops and other amenities are never far away. Having said that, the distances in large cities can be
significant, and if there is no underground line near to where you want to go, it can be a struggle getting there
in a reasonable amount of time, especially during rush hour. However, the city does offer a lot of
opportunities for education, entertainment and culture, so it’s hard to get bored. The challenge is to actually
use the possibilities that are available, something that is not as easy as it might seem.
In the countryside, meanwhile, the most attractive aspect is the peace and quiet, with no traffic noise or trams
to disturb the silence. That’s as long as you don’t live near a farm where there is a lot of machinery, as
farmers often have to be out in the fields seven days a week. The air and water are clean though, and the sight
of greenery all around has a positive impact on our psychological well-being. It may be true that there can be
little to do in a village as entertainment venues are few and far between. But those at a later stage of life are
likely to be less interested in nightlife anyway.
So, what’s best for you? Maybe the way to approach the question is to decide what appeals to you most now,
but also to think ahead and consider what will be important to you in ten or fifteen years’ time. That way you
can make a decision, knowing that you have thought through all the options carefully.
