horizontal alignments, grading procedure, grades, vertical curves)

Week 13-14 Intersection design (intersection safety, sight distance, approach distance, safe
intersection sight distance, minimum gap distance, rural and urban intersection
treatments)

Week 16 Earthwork consideration (geotechnical consideration, earthwork balance,

material type)

Why ‘Geometric Road Design’?

 Maximise safety
 Maximise operational efficiency
 Maintain uniformity of design parameters
 Develop economic design
 Provision for future expansion with minimum reconstruction
 Maximise opportunities for all road users
 Minimise adverse environmental impacts
 Accounting community requirements
Road Safety Principles

“Humans, as road users are fallible and will continue to make mistakes, and that
the road design and operation of the road system should not penalise people
with death or serious injury when they do make mistakes.”
(Austroads-Road Design, Part 3)

Roads (and vehicles) should be designed to reduce the

incidence and severity of crashes when they inevitably occur

Designers needs to understand interactions between the

various road elements and in particular the likely crashes that
may occur for any particular road setting
Road Design Process
Features to be Considered

Cross section elements

The gradient
The intersection
The consideration of sight distance
Factors Influencing Geometric Road Design

 The characteristics of the vehicle

 The behavior of the driver
 The psychology of the driver
 Traffic characteristics
 Traffic Volume
 Traffic Speed
Alignment Control

Key issues to be considered-

 speed group  cultural heritage sites
 operating speed  environmentally sensitive sites
 terrain  geology
 cadastral boundaries  providing appropriate sight distances
 planning scheme boundaries  providing overtaking opportunities
 matching to existing roads or access points  costs
 significant stream crossings  aesthetics
 historical buildings  major utility services.
