The document discusses various properties of air, including its density, composition as a mixture, and the variability of water vapor content. It also addresses animal respiration methods, the role of oxygen in plant respiration, and the effects of temperature on air solubility in water. Additionally, it explains how air can generate electricity through windmills and the importance of the atmosphere in regulating Earth's temperature.

Q1. Does the density of the blanket of air that surrounds us get thicker or thinner as we go up?

Answer. The density of the blanket of air that surrounds us gets thinner as we go up.

Q2. Is air a mixture or a compound? Justify your answer.

Answer. Air is a mixture and not a compound. This is because air consists of indefinite composition
of different gases and this composition can vary from place to place. Moreover, the different gases
present in air show their individual properties which suggests that air is not a compound.

Q3. The percentage of water vapour in the air is always the same. Do you agree? Give reasons.

Answer. No, the percentage of water vapours in the air is not always same. This is so because the
percentage of water vapour varies from time to time and from place to place. The amount of water
vapour present in the air depends on a number of factors such as temperature and temperature
changes from one place to another.

Q1. All animals breathe in oxygen through lungs. True or False? Justify your answer.

Answer. The given statement is false. This is because animals such as fishes use gills to obtain oxygen
from the water. Moreover, some animals such as earthworms can even breathe through their skin.
Thus, all animals do not breathe through lungs.

Q2. Plants take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis during the day. Do they also use oxygen during
the day? Justify your answer.

Answer. Yes, plants use oxygen during the day. This is because the plants require oxygen for
performing respiration so that they can obtain energy. Like all living organisms, plants also require
constant supply of energy and thus, they use oxygen during the day.

Q3. How does the solubility of air in water change as the temperature increases?

Answer. The solubility of air in water decreases with an increase in the temperature.

Q4. Can air be used to generate electricity? How?

Answer. Air can be used to generate electricity through windmills. The winds generated from the
air can be used to rotate the blades of the windmills. The rotation of these blades generates
electricity through a dynamo.

Q5. Without the atmosphere, the earth would have been very hot during the day and very cold at
night. Do you agree? Give reasons.

Answer. Yes, the Earth would have been extremely cold at the night and very hot during the day if
the atmosphere was not present. The light and heat emitted by the Sun is absorbed by the
atmosphere and some part of it is reflected back. This helps to keep the day temperature to an
optimum value. During night, the heat trapped by the atmosphere helps to keep the temperature
warm which prevents excessive lowering of temperature. Thus, in the absence of atmosphere,
temperature of Earth will be very hot during the day and extremely cold during the night.
