Note: A word can be divided into parts: root and affixes (prefix + suffix). Affixes are added to the root either to alter
the meaning of the word or to change its category.

Example: the word «immeasurable» im measure able


Prefix root suffix

use (noun) + suffix “ful” useful (adj) Change in term of category

Infect (verb) + prefix “dis” disinfect (verb) Change in term of meaning


There are specific suffixes to form adjectives like: ive, ful, less, ic, ous, al, ly, lar, ate, able/ible, ed, an, ch, ese…….etc
