DOC-20250312-WA0015.

The project aims to develop a cost-effective assistive technology device for visually impaired individuals that converts printed text into audio using a Raspberry Pi and OCR technology. It addresses the challenges of high costs and lack of accessibility in existing reading devices. The project includes hardware and software requirements, a timeline for development, and references for further research.

1
Theme of Project

Assistive Technology for Visually Impaired

Goal: To enable blind individuals to read printed text by
converting it into audio using an embedded system.

2
Need Statement
Challenges Addressed:
• Lack of accessible reading devices for blind individuals
• Expensive assistive reading technologies available in the market
• Difficulty in reading printed material without Braille conversion
Solution: A cost-effective, portable reading device using Raspberry Pi and OCR
.

3
Problem Statement
Existing Problems:
• High cost of commercial assistive reading devices (e.g., Or Cam)
• Lack of affordable and portable alternatives
• Need for real-time text conversion to speech for independent reading
Proposed Solution:
• A Raspberry Pi-based OCR system that captures text and reads it aloud.
• Integration with Google Cloud Vision for text recognition.
• A simple interface using push buttons for blind-friendly usability.

4
Scope of Project
• New technologies have been invented for the blind people but still it is difficult for them to read
and write easily. So, by using the project we can help to read the text,
• Reader for blind and visually impaired people mainly aimed to assist the blind and visually
impaired people to read the document in the form of text book, mobile screen or computer
screen. even though some of the glasses are available in the market they are too costly and not
affordable to common people.

5
Introduction
The "Reader for Blind is an assistive device designed to improve accessibility for visually
impaired individuals. It uses OCR and TTS technologies to convert printed text into audio
output. By integrating AI and Raspberry Pi, the project enhances reading independence.

6
