you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

7
What’s New

Josllie is not allowed to go to school because of the pandemic. She just spends
her time reading books and watching TV. A brief flash report was aired. She saw the
announcement, “A mandatory temperature check will be done on every individual
who is going to enter any establishment. A temperature of above 37.5ºC will not be
allowed to enter.” Then she saw the video of the security guard pointing something
to the forehead of the woman. She asked her mother about what she saw, and her
mother explained about temperature and how it can be read.

8
It is difficult to tell exactly how hot or cold something is by just merely touching.
Temperature is the hotness or coldness of an object. It can be expressed in “degrees
Celsius” (ºC) or “degrees Fahrenheit (ºF).

An instrument used in measuring temperature is the thermometer.

The thermometer can be alcohol / mercurial and digital. It has two important
elements: the temperature sensor and the scale. The temperature sensor is the bulb,
while the scale shows the temperature.

Different kinds of thermometer either alcohol/mercurial or digital are used for

different purposes.
A wall thermometer measures the temperature of the room or the environment.
A clinical thermometer measures body temperature.
A kitchen thermometer measures the temperature while cooking, frying, or baking.

9
What is it

Case 1: Reading Alcohol/mercurial thermometer

A thermometer is consists of a glass attached to a glass tube with a number
scale. The two common liquids inside the scale that goes up and down as the
temperature changes are alcohol and mercury. The liquid in the bulb rises or
drops with change in the temperature.
Temperature is measured in degrees. The little symbol ° means degrees. Each
space in the number scale represents 1ºC. The numbers below 0 are written with a
minus (-) sign. The higher the number is the warmer the temperature.
To read an alcohol/ mercury thermometer, hold it between your finger and thumb
and turn until you can see the point on the scale. The top of the red bar is the
temperature reading of the body or the room.
Here is an example of a thermometer used in measuring the temperature of the
weather.

Can you tell the parts of an alcohol/mercurial thermometer?

The above thermometer is an example of alcohol/mercurial thermometer that

measures the temperature of the body. Shake the thermometer a few times to bring
the level of mercury down. To read it, keep the mercury level along your line of sight
then take the reading. The top of the red bar is pointing at 38.5, so the temperature
is 38.5°C.

10
Case 2: Reading Digital thermometer
A digital thermometer is a temperature-sensing instruments that are easily
portable, have permanent probes and a convenient digital display. The way a digital
thermometer works depends upon its type of sensor.
There are many types of digital thermometer depending upon the need of the
people.
Digital Thermometer- a widely used item of temperature-measuring
equipment that replaces the alcohol/,mercurial thermometer. They provide accuracy
and speed of temperature reading in day-to-day professional and home
applications. They are designed for taking body temperature readings in a clinical
setting.
To use the thermometer, just place it under the armpit or inside the mouth. A
signal will be heard indicating that the temperature is measured.
To read the temperature, simply read the digital numbers that will appear on
the screen.

Forehead Thermometer – uses an infrared scanner to measure the

temperature. It is used in business establishments because it can record the
person’s temperature quickly and are easily tolerated.
To read the temperature, just place the sensor at the center of the forehead.
The digital number will appear at the screen to tell the heat waves coming from
the body.

This uses infrared sensors to measure the temperature. This is commonly used
today in different venues, airports, and stores because they require no physical
contact which is important in avoiding Covid 19.

11
Case 3: Solving routine and non-routine problems
involving temperature using appropriate problem-
solving strategies and tools
Example 1 non-routine
Doctor Peter is treating sick people at Dr. Yanga Hospital. He is visiting
the hospital beds of children. He visited Lee’s room. Dr. Peter examined
him and got his temperature. Yesterday, Lee’s temperature was 38.8ºC.
Upon reading the digital thermometer he found out that Lee’s temperature
was 37.2ºC.He can go home already. What is the difference in Lee’s body
temperature?

Steps in Solving Word Problem

1. Understand
• Read and analyze the given problem.

What is asked in the problem?

What are the given facts?

2. Plan

• Plan for the correct operation/s to be used. Select your own strategy.

3. Solve

• Write the number sentence.

• Solve for the correct answer.

4. Check

Let us check if our answer is correct in the word problem

Understand.

a. What is asked?
the difference of Lee’s body temperature
b. What are the given facts?
38.8ºC- the temperature when Lee was brought to the hospital
37.2ºC- Lee’s temperature now
Plan.
What operation/s shall we use to solve the problem?
- The temperature before is 38.8ºC and the temperature now is 37.2ºC. To
find the difference of Lee’s body temperature, we must subtract.
Solve 38.8ºC
- 37.2ºC
1.6ºC
12
Check

37.2ºC
+ 1.6ºC
38.8ºC

Example 2 Routine
The temperature at 4 o’clock in the morning was read at 28ºC when looked
upon the wall thermometer. Around 10 o’clock 32ºC was registered. What is
the difference in temperature between 4 o’clock to 10 o’clock that day?
Understand

1. What is asked?

the difference in temperature from 4 o’clock to 10 o’clock

2.. What are the given facts?

28ºC temperature at 4 o’clock

32ºC temperature at 10 o’clock

Plan.

3. What operation/s shall we use to solve the problem?

-The temperature at 4 o’clock is 28ºC and the temperature at 10 o’clock is

32ºC. To find the difference in temperature of the weather, we must subtract.

Solve

4. Number sentence:

32ºC -28ºC = N

5. Answer:

4°C
