Write neatly and legibly
QUESTION ONE. Comprehension

1. In 2007, poachers in South Africa killed 13 endangered rhinos. Despite a police

force committed to anti-poaching, that number has soared since then. In 2014,
1,215 rhinos were killed for their horns, which are usually harvested while the
animal is still alive.
2. Conservation group Protect has started field trials of the Real-time Anti-Poaching
Intelligence Device (RAPID) to prevent poaching.
3. The GPS tracking collar is combined with a heart-rate monitor and video camera.
If a poacher attacks an animal armed with RAPID, the device alerts police and
records images of the poacher.
4. “We just don’t know where or when poachers might strike,” said Dean Peinke,
Mammal Ecologist for the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, South Africa.
“To effectively patrol these vast landscapes requires an army.” And even then,
poachers could find a way through. They are well-organized and equipped, and
they will find gaps in any defence because the reward is so high.”
5. RAPID broadcasts real-time data to anti-poaching police. Dr Paul O’Donoghue,
scientific advisor for Protect, says, “The heart monitor on the device triggers the
alarm the second heart rate rises or falls, the video camera confirms why, and if it
appears to be a poaching risk, the GPS confirms the location and rangers can be
on the scene via helicopter or truck within minutes, leaving poachers no time to
harvest the valuable parts of the animal or to escape.”
6. As proof of concept, Protect recently completed field trials with the device,
releasing rhino’s-eye-view footage from the tiny video camera. To Install the
device, they must find and tranquilise each rhino. They hope to expand the
programme to include elephants and tigers, with a fully functional control centre
operational as early as next year.
7. With Cecil the Lion recently killed in Zimbabwe, the plight of endangered species
is in the public eye more than ever. Protect relies on donations for RAPID to be
implemented.
8. Steve Piper, Protect director, says, “The tide has to be turned and the Protect
RAPID can do it; the only thing heading for extinction over the next decade is
poaching itself.”

Internet use for extended periods of time tends to isolate people from their friends
and family. Many people meet friends and partners online, but cyber relationships
are no substitute for socialising in real life. In fact, it is possible for internet users to
become addicted. Although this kind of addiction differs from chemical addiction, it is
a rising problem. Some people lose their jobs and suffer other negative effects from
overuse. There are many authentic websites on the net that offer factual, valid
information, however, there is also an abundance of sites overflowing with false
information. Unfortunately, many internet users find it difficult to differentiate between
them. When people use their personal information online when shopping or banking,
it creates an opportunity for hackers to gain access to private data that can be used
to steal money and even their identity. Frequent use of the internet often means your
computer is exposed to viruses that can crash your system. This can result in you
losing important files, personal information, and sometimes even destroying your
operating system. Internet users also run the risk of their children stumbling on or
seeking out inappropriate websites when using the internet at home. This can be
especially dangerous if the child accidentally shares personal information like an
address, telephone number or account numbers. Another problem with excessive
internet use is that it has allowed a large number of people to remain anonymous –
people who may access various websites, social networks, chat rooms and forums
available. This can result in perverted individuals or scammers gaining the trust of
innocent people and taking advantage of them. (adapted from eHow.com)
