\Example 3 : \ Write 8 paragraph on India as a developed nation with self sufficiency In resources.
power and technology. Express your views in two paragraphs of 100 words each.
(AU Chennai, Jan - 2010)

India is one of the most populated countries in the world. It is believed, that by the middle
of the 21st century, IQdia will have surpassed China in te~s of the number ofinhabitants. Inspite
oflndia having diverse social issues such as dialact barriers, gender inequality, levels ofpoverty
rates and severely polluted areas. India is believed to be the world's second fastest growing
economy, closely behind the US and the Republic of China. India is still striving to become a
developed nation and the key to its development lies in its agricultural economy. Though measures
have been taken to achieve the dream of equitable growth, the gap between the rural and urban
India still exists.

To reduce the gap between the Rural and Urban India, the growth of rural people is needed.
the most important component for this growth is infrastructure development. India being a
predominantly agricultural economy, the infrastructure development centering agriculture will play
a crucial role in the country's development. Communication plays a vital role in this development.
The rural India does not have proper access to information. Lack of proper education has
incapacitated them to understand the power of information. Underutilisation of this powerful source
is an impediment for the gap. So the introduction of 'Education for all' is the first step taken by
~ur Government for the ~un~'s develop~ent. It is ~o be realised that holistic primary education

resources, power and technology.

IExample 5) Write two paragraphs on Water as an invaluable natural resource that has to be
spent carefully. (Nov/Dec. 2008, AU, Tirunelveli, January, 2006)

Water is one of the most precious elements on the planet. A human being may survive
without food for several days but water deprivation can kill a person in a matter of hours.
Life is, therefore, tied to water, as it is tied to air and food. While water sustains life, it can
also cause deaths if contaminated. Some of the deadliest diseases, which kill millions every
year, are carried through unclean water. Water covers 70 per cent of the planet but more
than 97.5 percent of the surface water is ocean which, obviously, is not useable in industry,
agriculture or as drinking water. Desalination is far too .expensive for widespread adoption.
The fresh water on which the world depends is a mere 2j5 percent of available water. But
then, three quarters of' this fresh water is trapped in the foin'1 of snow and ice. So, all that is
available for human use (and, of course, for animals as well) is 0.6 percent of the surface
water. There is no more fresh water on earth today than there was 2000 years ago when
population was three per cent of its current size! About 120 crore people (20 per cent of the
global population) across 40 countries do not have access to safe water; 240 crores of people
lack adequate sanitation services. Women in Africa and Asia walk an average distance of
6km a day to collect water. Over the next 20 years, the world's population is supposed to
increase from the present 6.4 billion to an estimated 7.2 billion whereas the average supply of
water per person is expected to fall by one-third. The hardest hit will be the poorest. Fresh
water fishing, a key livelihood activity around the world, is under threat. More than 20 percent
of the world's known - 10,000 - fresh water fish species have become extinct, been threatened
or endangered in recent decades.
We have to save every drop of water today, because water shortage could well lead
to the next world war. Unless appropriate measures are taken immediately, the world would
soon face threats to global water supply; further there will be environmental damage and ongoing
health risks for millions of people lacking access to clean water. Population growth, climate
change, over use/misuse of water and pollution of available water are the principal causes of
the crisis. Conserving water or using water more efficiently, polluting less, prudently managing
supply and demand and slowing population growth collectively represent the answer to the
problem.
\Exphmationl
Paragraph writing is a genre of writing that needs .c areful planning and effort.
When communication is in the written mediwn, the idea to be presented requires thinking, rethinking,
writing and rewriting.
Continuous writing without indentations in the beginning or spacing between paragraphs
may create problem for readers. They may lose track of the central point and wander about.
Paragraphing is a method used by writers to divide materials into units. It helps the reader to
locate and comprehend the important points and paragraph strictness guides the readers through
the writer's reasoning. -

An essay is usually divided into paragraphs. A paragraph may be a single sentence or a

group of sentences revolving around~a central idea found in the topic sentence. This topic sentence
will be substantiated by supporting sentences. So a.paragraph can be defined as a unit of
composition in which one idea or thought is developed by means of examples or supporting
details. Usually the introductory paragraph of an essay will contain the thesis statement and the
subsequent paragraphs will be supporting paragraphs; The last paragraph will close the essay by
summmgup.

A paragraph should be developed by using the supplementary details in a logical order

so that there is coherence in thought. It should follow the chronological order or space order
or proceed from general to particular, or particular to general and climax. Transition words like,
'and', in addition', 'more over', 'next', 'also', 'but', 'however', 'meanwhile', ' finally', ' for
example', 'for instance', 'therefore', 'thus', 'then', 'consequently' etc., are used to mark addition,
contrast, result which help us to carry the flow of thought from ·one sentence to the n.e xt or
from one paragraph to the next.
