Wave optics
Assignment – 1
Interference:
1. State and explain the principle of superposition of waves.
2. With a ray diagram discuss the theory of thin films and derive the conditions for bright and dark fringes in the
case of reflected system.
3. Explain the formation of Newton’s rings and obtain an expression for the diameter of the dark ring, Wavelength
and radius of curvature of Plano convex lens in reflected system.

Diffraction:
4. Distinguish between interference and diffraction. .
5. Distinguish between Fresnel’s and Fraunhofer diffraction.
6. Discuss in detail Fraunhofer diffraction due to single slit with neat diagram.
7. Explain with necessary theory, the Fraunhofer diffraction due to N - slits. (Diffraction grating).

Quantum mechanics
Assignment – 2

1. Derive the expression for de-Broglie wave length.


2. Explain Heisenberg uncertainty principle.
3. Derive the time dependent Schrödinger wave equation.
4. Derive the time independent Schrödinger wave equation.
5. Derive the energy values of free particle in one dimensional box.

Electromagnetic field theory

1. Explain scalar and vector fields with example.


2. If r is the position vector of a point, then show that div r = 3.
3. State Maxwell’s equations. (Fundamental laws of electro magnetism)
4. Derive the differential form of Maxwell’s equations.
5. Explain the propagation of an electromagnetic wave through a dielectric medium.
(Derive Maxwell’s wave equation through a dielectric media)

1. Explain insulators, semiconductors and conductors based on energy band gap.


2. Distinguish between Intrinsic and Extrinsic semiconductors.
3. Write notes on drift and diffusion currents.
4. Derive the expression for electrical conductivity in semiconductors.
5. State and explain Hall Effect and derive the expression for Hall coefficient.
6. Write any four applications of Hall Effect.
7. Explain direct and indirect semiconductors.

Magnetism & Dielectrics

Magnetism:
1. Explain the terms, Magnetic permeability, Magnetic Induction and Magnetic Susceptibility.
2. Derive the relation between B, H, I and μr, χ
3. Distinguish between dia, Para and Ferromagnetism.
4. Explain the hysteresis loop observed in ferromagnetic materials. (B-H curve or I- H curve)
5. Distinguish between Soft and Hard magnetic materials.

Dielectrics:
6. Define basic principles of Dielectrics.
7. What are polar and non-polar dielectrics? Explain with neat diagram.
8. Explain Dielectrics in external field with neat diagram.
9. Explain Electronic polarization, ionic polarization and Orientational polarization.
10. Discuss the frequency dependence of polarizability.
