DESIGN OF A 8m UNIPOLE (ROOF TOP)

1.0 Introduction
This report gives the calculations for the design of a 8m Standard Unipole (roof top).
The unipole is designed to be affixed to reinforced concrete structural elements of existing builing
as provision of shear, tension and torsional restraint to the unipole.
Height of existing structure is idealized at ( base) 60 m AMSL

The unipole is designed to support maximum number of Microwave and Panel Antennas at heigth
and azimuth as tabulated below:-

2.0 Design Criteria and Specification

(a) Basic wind speed considered for the design is 120 km/h @ 33.33 m/s

(b) Basic wind speed considered for Serviceability 108 km/h @ 30.00 m/s

(c) Derivation of feasible wind loadings area done with due considerations to
recommendations suggested in CP3 : Chapter V: Part 2: 1972

(d) Structural design of steelworks shall be based on the British StandardBS 5950: Structural
use of steel work in building

(e) All steel shall be Hot-Dip Galvanized after fabrication as perBS EN ISO 1461

(f) All connecting bolts used to affix boom to existing structural elements shall strictly adhere to
bolt manufacturer's specifications and/or installation guides. NDT on existing structural elements
shall be carried out accordingly at the discretion of the Design Engineers from time to time should
it be necessary to determine the strength of the base material(s).

(g) All welding works shall comply to requirements outlined inBS EN 729

Wind loading on microwave disc will be base on value given by Supplier as shown in attached.
4.0 Analysis of Unipole

4.1 Structural Analysis

A computer model of the unipole is created and the analysis is carried out using the Structural Analysis
and Design Software known as STAAD.PRO. The loading considered for the analysis of the pole are se
weight of pole and antennas, and wind loading acting on the pole and antennas as per outlined in
section 3.0

4.2 Deflection of Unipole

The deflection of the pole is required to be checked for serviceablility condition.

The figure obtained from the analysis is shown in appendix. The lateral sway and tilt at worst case
considered at the most critical point, which is at the top of the pole area shown as below:-

Lateral sway = 9.304 mm

height 4100 mm

o

< 0.5 "PASS"

5.0 Structure Design

5.1 Existing structure checking

The proposed 8.0m Unipole will be rested on the existing RC roof slab, the live load for normal roof slab
design is 1.5KN/m2 according to BS 6399, Part 1. The weight of the new structure shall be less then
the allowable design live load.

Total weight of the whole structure including all the ancialliary and antenna,
W= 7.66 KN
Area of the base, Ab = 4x4
= 16 m
Uniform pressure on slab, w = 0.479 <1.5KN/m2 "PASS"

5.2 Uplifting and punching shear checking

Maximun uplifting, p = -3.034 KN

Provided R.C.Plinth = 1 x 1 x 0.15mm thk.
R.C.Plinth Weight= 3.6 KN < -3.034 kN, OK

Maximun point load, pu = 6.864 KN

Total Point Load = 10.464 kN
Area of contact, Ac = 1000 x 1000 mm2
Perimeter of shear, l = 4000 mm
Assume slab effective depth, d = 80 mm
punching shear stress, ps = 0.033 N/mm2 <.8Sqrt(fcu) = 4N/mm2 "PASS"

Perimeter of 1.5d, l = 4480 mm

Punching shear stress, ps = 0.029 N/mm2 <vc = 0.32 N/mm2 "PASS"
6 Conclusion

From the structure analysis, the proposed main structure and base i-beam size are satisfy the structur
design requirement. The proposed 8.0m unipole structure's loading also not exceeding the design live
load of roof slab. From the site visual inspection, the existing roof slabs are in good condition. Thus,
the existing roof slab is capable to withstand the proposed 8.0m height unipole structure.
