Matthew Carmona

BA, BArch, MA, PhD, ARB, MRTPI

Reader in Planning and Urban Design at the Bartlett School of Planning.


Head of the Bartlett School of Planning, University College, London
Matthew is an architect and a planner whose research interests in the interstices between these two
established professions. Previously he worked as a lecturer at the University of Nottingham and before that
as a researcher and architect in private practice.

His research has focused on the policy context for delivering better quality built and natural environments,
having worked on a range of research projects examining:
Design policies in local plans
Residential design policy and guidance
Delivering urban renaissance
The value of urban design
The working relationships between housing providers and planners
Measuring and managing quality in planning
Managing external public space

London, Spon Press Matthew leads teaching in urban design at the Bartlett School of Planning, though
which the linked areas of urban design 'theory' , 'process' and 'policy' are explored. In BSc II and MPhil I he
teaches courses exploring the theoretical underpinning to urb an design, as a means to appraise existing
environments and to forward practical proposals to influence the quality and liveability of urban space. In
the Diploma and MSc/MPhil II years, those wishing to follow the Specialism in Urban Design work with
Matthew to explore, first, the 'process' of urban design through a series of linked urban design projects, and
second, the potentially positive role the planning system can play in guiding, and encouraging the better
design of development.
In addition, Matthew is involved in thesis supervision at both MPhil and Diploma levels and acts as
supervisor to a small group of PhD students.

Currently, Matthew Carmona holds positions on the RTPI Council and Research and Knowledge
Committee, he is a member of the Urban Design Skilled Workers Group coordinated by CABE, he is on the
editorial board of Urban Design Quarterly and is the Book Reviews Editor for the Journal of Urban Design,
he is a visiting lecturer at the University of Nottingham. He is series editor for a series of 'Design in the Built
Environment' texts to by published by Ashgate.
