QUARTER 1 – WEEK 2 - MODULE 6

Emerging Patterns
I. Introduction

This module will help you to recognize the emerging patterns and
understand the various data patterns you can use for future planning. It
will also explain the importance of pattern recognition and how it will help
you in intelligent decision-making.

II. Objectives
Identify and explain an emerging pattern. (MCT12-Ia-b-7)

III. Vocabulary List

Emerge – to appear or coming out of something or out from behind

something Patterns – a particular way on which something is done, is
organized or happens Pattern Recognition – is the process of
recognizing patterns by using machine learning algorithm
Trends - a general development or change in a situation, or in the way that
people are behaving

IV. Pre-Test
Read and analyze the statements and choose the letter of the correct
answer. Write your answer on your notebook.

1. The ability to spot an existing emerging patterns is called.

a. Time Series Forecasting
b. Pattern Series
c. Pattern Recognition
d. Pattern Prediction
2. A pattern is said to be seasonal if;
a. There is a continuous decrease and increase in numbers over time.
b. When fluctuations repeat over fixed periods of time
c. Non-linear curved lines where the data rises or falls not at a steady
rate, but a higher rate
d. When fluctuations do not repeat over fixed periods of time and
are hence unpredictable and extend beyond a year.
3. Which best explains a linear trend?
a. Commodity prices go down during recession.
b. Consumption of ice cream is high during summer
c. People are more cautious of spending money during bad times.
d. Greeting cards increase in sales during Christmas and Valentine.

4. The basis of emerging patterns is:
a. Change c. Supply
c. Demand d. Trends
5. Which of the statement is correct about pattern?
a. Pattern tend to follow a trend
b. Pattern is a repetitive occurrence
c. Emerging patterns are basis of trends
d. Pattern follows a direction

V. Learning Activities

A trend is something that is popular on social level and people tend

to do it. In fashion, when people wear something unique and it becomes
popular, other people will jump on board with that trend, hence the term
“trendy.” While a pattern, is a broader concept that it describes
something that happens in a predictable or logical sequence. Trends do
tend to follow a sort of pattern. In a broader sense, a trend is something
that happens for a reason, while a pattern is the observation of things that
happening in a specific sequence that is predictable in some manner. A
trend always follows a direction, while a pattern is a repetitive occurrence.
Fashion trend from the past being “in” is a pattern, does the saying
History repeats itself.

In trends there are three basic types, the up, down, and the
sideways. When we are talking about patterns, it can be a downward or
upward, or mark a beginning of a new trend. Trends are basically the
basis of emerging patterns, whether it is in fashion designs, clothing,
social media, technology, industry, stock/markets, and business. Patterns
include sale volume as well as price. Trend patterns have been used in
business in order forecast the next method that they are going to develop
ahead of time. And this is called the “Time Series Forecasting.” It is used to
predict future values and based on previously observed values. This has
been helpful to business executive in future planning. There are four types
of data patterns in time series:

1. Trend classified into three:

a. Linear trend – is a continuous decrease or increase in numbers over
time
b. Exponential trend – non-linear curved lines where the data rises
or falls not at a steady rate, but a higher rate.
c. Damped trend – is a curved line that shows data values rise or
fall initially, and then suddenly stops rising or falling.
a. Seasonal pattern – when fluctuations repeat over fixed
periods of time and are hence predictable and do not extend
beyond a year. Factors in seasonal patterns include: weather,
2
vacation and holidays and usually consists of periodic,
repetitive and generally regular and predictable patterns. It
can be weekly, monthly or quarterly.

3
b. Cyclical Pattern- Patterns are called cyclical when
fluctuations do not repeat over fixed periods of time and are
hence unpredictable and extend beyond a year.
c. Random or Irregular Pattern – are fluctuations in time series
that are short in duration, erratic in nature and follow no
regularity in the occurrence pattern. Examples of these
patterns are unusual events like floods, strikes, bankruptcy,
and terrorist incidents.

Pattern Recognition

In understanding all these trends pattern, pattern recognition

technique is very important. The ability to spot existing or emerging
patterns is one of the most critical skills in intelligent decision making,
though we’re mostly unaware that we do it all the time. Combining past
experience, intuition, and common sense, the ability to recognize patterns
give us the ability to predict what will happen with some degree of
accuracy. Recognizing patterns allow us to predict and expect what is
coming. An example of this pattern recognition, is when a child goes to
school, the first thing he/she learns is to recognize various objects in the
environment and finally learn how to understand and respond to them.
Our learning ability depends on how strong our ability to identify a new
useful pattern and use it suitably. Patterns recognition works every time
our senses take in information. Whether it’s something you see, hear,
taste, touch, or smell, at the same moment as you are having the current
experience, your brain is comparing it to things you already know, and
seeing how it fits.

X. Assignment / Additional Activities

Pattern Hunt: Get your notebook. Take a look around inside your house,
garden, backyard and spaces around you. Name and list down patterns that
you see, better if you could draw and take a picture (optional) of them and
explain how these patterns important and influence your life.
