Dear Sunil,

I heartily congratulate you for the magnificent resort you have built in Goa.
Thank you for your invitation for its inaugural on 15th March.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the ceremony because I have to
attend a two day seminar in Delhi conducted by the Doctors’s Association of
India.
I will surely come to see your resort in the near future.

Yours affectionately
Ravi Anshuman.
4. Answer any five of the following questions in 40-50 words.
2x5=10M

a. Why does M Hamel tell the class that their language is the key to their
prison?
Ans: Language is not merely a means of communication. It is also a reservoir
of our cultural heritage. M. Hamel advises the class to keep their language
alive because it is a tool to freedom from enslavement. Language will
cultivate the feeling of patriotism, fraternity and unity.

b. Why does the peddler leave a rattrap as a gift for Edla Willmansson?
What does the letter convey?
Ans: The peddler wanted to thank Edla Willmansson for her kindness. He was
a poor man who had only rattraps with him. Therefore, he gifted her a
rattrap and also wrote a letter to her thanking her for her hospitality. He
expressed his gratitude to her for raising him from a petty thief to a
respectable captain and gave him a chance to redeem himself from sin and
lead an honest life in future.

c. Why was Subbu considered to be number two in Gemini studios?

Ans: Subbu was considered to be number two in Gemini Studios, next to the
boss himself because he did his best to achieve the vision of his boss, SS
Vasan for the studio. He was a gifted writer, actor and a talented artist who
could help in film production. The author Asokamitran, says that in the early
days he provided ‘direction and definition’ to Gemini Studios.

d. Why does Sophie confide more in her brother Geoff?

Ans : Sophie confides in her brother Geoff because he has seen more of the
world than her. He is three years elder to her and therefore he is able to
understand her flighty, dreamy nature better than the elders in the family.
Although he doesn't believe her fanciful stories, he is more gentle in
correcting her.

e. How does Douglas conquer the last vestiges of fear?

Ans: Douglas decides to overcome his crippling fear of water and hires a
coach to teach him swimming. The coach teaches him in a special way by
connecting a pulley through his belt and gradually lowering him into the
pool. Douglas is able to swim the length of the pool. However, he still finds
traces of his fear coming up. Therefore he swims in deep strong currents in
Warm Lake, Meade Glacier, River Tieton so that he can conquer the last
vestiges of fear.

f. According to Pablo Neruda, how does the earth teach us that there is
life under apparent stillness?
Ans: In the season of autumn, the trees begin to shed their leaves. It appears
as if nature around is dead. However, with the arrival of spring, new life
begins to sprout and the trees are covered with lush green leaves, flowers
and fruit. Similarly, once we begin to work after a brief period of stillness and
silence, our lives become more focused and meaningful.

5. Answer any two of the following questions in 40-50 words. 2x2=4M

a. Why did Sam convert all his currency to old notes and go to
Galesburg?
Ans: Sam was a city dweller who had heard Charley praise the natural
beauty of Galesburg many times. He began to like Galesburg and wanted to
settle down in the idyllic and quiet town. Although he disbelieved Charley at
first, he later started believing that the Third Level existed. He converted all
his money into old currency so that he could find the Third Level and settle
down in Galesburg of 1890s.
b. Why does a day in Antarctica make a great difference in one’s
perspective of the earth?
Ans: Even a day spent in Antarctica changes our viewpoint because we learn
a lot about the earth's history and its future. From a giant landmass named
Gondwana, the land masses separated and formed into continents. With
global warming, increasing pollution, depletion of natural resources, melting
of glaciers at the poles, the future prognosis of the earth's health isn't very
bright. People become more sensitive towards the earth after spending a few
hours in Antarctica.
c. Why does Zitkala Sa rebel against having her hair cut short?
Ans: Zitkaka Sa rebelled against having her hair cut because in her tribe,
they all had long braids. In her culture, only people in mourning and losers in
war wore their hair short. Therefore she tried her best to resist their attempt
to cut her hair.

6. Answer any one of the following in 120-150 words.

a. How does the use of vivid imagery by Adrienne Rich in “Aunt Jennifer’s
Tigers”, and by Kamala Das in “My mother at Sixt -six” contribute to the
overall theme of their respective poems?
Ans: Imagery helps in creating a vivid picture in the minds of the reader. A
poet is able to create the same mood and environment of the poem through
the use of imagery.
In the poem ‘My Mother at Sixty Six’, Kamala Das is able to convey her fear
of losing her mother through the image of her mother's wan and pale face
which is like a ‘corpse’. Her mother's face is compared to a ‘late winter's
moon’ that has lost its customary brilliance and lustre. Through the image of
the ‘young trees and merry children’ she deftly brings out the debility and
infirmity associated with old age.
In the poem ‘Aunt Jennifer's Tigers’, the poet Adrienne Rich conveys the
image of a lady trapped inescapably in an unhappy marriage. The images of
the wedding band and her ‘terrified hands’ bring out the traumatic married
life of Aunt Jennifer. Her ‘bright topaz tigers’ stand out vividly, representing
her desire for freedom. Her art becomes her refuge and sanctuary in a
hostile reality.
Thus the meaning of the poem is conveyed clearly through the skillful use of
imagery.

b. How did Gandhi’s arrival bring all-round development in Champaran?

Ans: Gandhiji came to Champaran on the entreaty of an unlettered peasant
named Rajkumar Shukla. When the sharecropping arrangement began to
escalate the tension between the British landlords and the peasants,
Rajkumar Shukla decided to approach Gandhi, and even today he is hailed as
the person who brought the Mahatma to Champaran.
After solving the Champaran issue amicably, Gandhiji continued to stay in
Champaran for almost a year in order to raise the cultural and social
backwardness. With the help of his disciples Mahadev Desai and Narhari
Pathak, their wives and his family, he set up primary schools in six villages.
He arranged for a doctor to volunteer his services. Quinine was administered
for malaria, and Sulphur was prescribed for skin problems. Castor oil was
used as a universal panacea. Kasturba Gandhi taught the women about
personal cleanliness and community hygiene. Gandhi never did anything in
half measures, so when he saw the backwardness in Champaran, he raised
the standard of the people. In everything he did, Gandhi tried to mould a
common person into a free courageous Indian.
7. Answer any one of the following in 120-150 words.
5M

a. Examine “The Tiger King” as a political satire.

Ans: ‘The Tiger king’ by Kalki Krishnamurthy is a political satire. It shows how
people in power use their position unfairly to gain personal ends. When he is
crowned, Jung Jung Bahadur decides to go on a tiger hunting spree and vows
to kill hundred tigers in order to prove the prophecy false. He acquires the
title of Tiger King. He neglects public welfare and also wastes money from
the royal treasury by spending three lakh rupees to pacify a powerful British
officer whom he had foolishly antagonized. He kills tigers indiscriminately,
thus exhausting the tiger population in his country. He marries a princess
from a kingdom having a large tiger population in order to gain access to kill
more tigers. He thus makes a mockery of the institution of marriage.
He instills fear among his subjects and is never able to gain true respect or
affection of his people as he fires his officers without reason and doubles the
taxes of the people as per his whims. He even neglects his own family in his
mindless pursuit of tigers. He doesn't care for environmental conservation
nor does he show any mercy for living creatures. After leading a meaningless
life, he ironically dies because of a toy tiger.

b. How does the lesson “The Enemy” demonstrate that compassion can
overcome prejudice and hatred?
Ans: ‘The Enemy’ highlights the values of compassion in a world torn by war
and hatred. Sadao Hoki, a Japanese doctor, has all it takes to lead a happy
life. He is a renowned doctor with a flourishing career and a happy family.
When an American soldier is washed ashore in front of his house, Sadao goes
through a moral dilemma of whether to save him or hand him over to the
army. His innate compassion drives him to operate and remove the bullet
from the prisoner's body.
By saving the American, he jeopardizes all that he has in life and he puts
himself and his family at risk. In the face of open defiance from the servants,
he continues to treat the soldier, aided by his kind wife, Hana. However, he
informs the general about the prisoner and spends three sleepless nights
expecting the general's assassins to kill the prisoner. In the end, he helps the
prisoner escape. Through a fortunate turn of events, the general forgets to
send the assassins as promised, and Sadao finds himself in a happy situation
where he can save the prisoner and even protect himself. In giving shelter to
a prisoner of war, Sadao stands unflinchingly by his moral principles.
