Introduction
A laptop computer or notebook computer, also known as
a laptop or notebook, is a small, portable personal computer (PC).
Laptops typically have a clamshell form factor with a flat-
panel screen on the inside of the upper lid and an alphanumeric
keyboard and pointing device on the inside of the lower lid. Most of
the computer's internal hardware is in the lower part, under the
keyboard, although many modern laptops have a built-in webcam at
the top of the screen, and some even feature a touchscreen display.
In most cases, unlike tablet computers which run on mobile
operating systems, laptops tend to run on desktop operating systems,
which were originally developed for desktop computers.

Laptops are used in a variety of settings, such as at work (especially

on business trips), in education, for playing games, web browsing, for
personal multimedia, and for general home computer use. They can
run on both AC power and rechargeable battery packs and can be
folded shut for convenient storage and transportation, making them
suitable for mobile use. Laptops combine many of
the input/output components and capabilities of a desktop computer
into a single unit, including a display screen (usually 11–17 in or 280–
430 mm in diagonal size), small speakers, a keyboard, and a pointing
device (namely compact ones such as touchpads or pointing sticks).
Hardware specifications may vary significantly between different
types, models, and price points.

The word laptop, modelled after the term desktop (as in desktop
computer), refers to the fact that the computer can be practically
placed on the user's lap; while the word notebook refers to most
laptops sharing a form factor with paper notebooks. As of 2024,
in American English, the terms laptop and notebook are used
interchangeably; in other dialects of English, one or the other may be
preferred. The term notebook originally referred to a type of portable
computer that was smaller and lighter than mainstream laptops of
the time, but has since come to mean the same thing and no longer
refers to any specific size.

Design elements, form factors, and construction can also vary

significantly between models depending on the intended use.
Examples of specialized models of laptops include 2-in-1 laptops,
with keyboards that either be detached or pivoted out of view from
the display (often marketed having a "laptop mode"), and rugged
laptops, for use in construction or military applications. Portable
computers, which later developed into modern laptops, were
originally considered to be a small niche market, mostly for
specialized field applications, such as in the military, for accountants,
or travelling sales representatives. As portable computers evolved
into modern laptops, they became widely used for a variety of
purposes.
Etymology
The terms laptop and notebook trace their origins to the early 1980s,
coined to describe portable computers in a size class smaller than the
mainstream units (so-called "luggable") but larger than pocket
computers. The etymologist William Safire traced the origin
of laptop to sometime before 1984; the earliest attestation
of laptop found by the Oxford English Dictionary dates to 1983. The
word is modelled after the term desktop, as in desktop
computer. Notebook, meanwhile, emerged earlier in 1982 to
describe Epson's HX-20 portable, whose dimensions roughly
correspond to a letter-sized pad of paper. Notebooks emerged as
their own separate market from laptops with the release of the NEC
Ultra Lite in 1988.

Notebooks and laptops continued to occupy distinct market

segments into the mid-1990s, but ergonomic considerations and
customer preference for larger screens soon led to
notebooks converging with laptops in the late 1990s. Now, the
terms laptop and notebook are synonymous, with laptop being the
more common term in most English-speaking territories.
Types of Laptops
There are several types of laptops available, including:

 Ultrabook’s: Thin and lightweight laptops that are

designed for portability.

 Gaming laptops: Powerful laptops that are designed

for gaming.

 Budget laptops: Affordable laptops that are designed for

basic tasks.

 Chromebooks: Laptops that run on Chrome OS and are

designed for web-based applications.

 2-in-1 laptops: Laptops that can convert into tablets.

Major Laptop Company
I. Apple: - Apple is one of the most recognizable electronics
companies in the world. Its products have become
synonymous with exceptional build quality, and the company is
well-known for its amazing customer support. Since 2020,
Apple has been producing its own chips instead of relying on
Intel, making MacBooks among the most powerful and power-
efficient laptops on the market. Another advantage of
MacBooks is their integration with other products in Apple's
ecosystem, allowing for features like Continuity Camera,
Airdrop, Handoff, etc. Gaming isn't great on MacBooks due to
the lack of compatible games, though there's some progress
on that front, as Apple has released a tool to help developers
create a macOS version of their games.

II. Acer: - Acer, a Taiwanese company, was founded in 1976 as

MultiTech and later renamed Acer in 1987. Despite its long-
term reputation for making affordable, budget laptops, the
company currently has one of the widest selections of models,
with multiple laptop lineups like the productivity-focused
Aspire and Swift, the gaming Nitro and Predator lines, the
creation-geared Concept line-up, and more. Acer is also one of
the biggest Chromebook manufacturers, producing popular
models like the Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (2020), and is also
among the first to produce gaming Chromebooks like the Acer
Chromebook 516 GE (2022).

III. Asus: - Founded in 1989 by four members who had worked at

Acer, ASUS, also known as Asustek, is one of the largest laptop
manufacturers in the world. It's also one of the best gaming
laptop brands and a regular sponsor of Esports events and
players. ASUS makes a wide range of laptops, including
ultraportable, mobile workstations, gaming laptops, and
Chromebooks. It often experiments with new form factors and
features, like dual-screen laptops, touchpads with an
integrated numpad, a customizable dial (like the ASUS Pro Art
Studio book Pro 16 OLED (2021), and 2-in-1 gaming tablets like
the ASUS ROG Flow Z13.

IV. Dell: - Dell is an American company founded in 1984 and one

of the largest laptop manufacturers. The company also makes
desktops, monitors, and a wide range of computer peripherals.
In 2006, Dell acquired Alienware, now considered one of the
best gaming laptop brands on the market. High-end Dell
laptops often have unique designs that stand out among the
crowd and generally provide a great user experience. A
common criticism of Dell is its use of proprietary parts, which
make repairs and upgrades challenging for the average user.

V. Hp: - HP, also known as Hewlett-Packard, is an American

company founded in 1939. As one of the oldest tech
companies in the world, HP has produced a wide range of
products, including calculators, digital cameras, personal digital
assistants, scanners, printers, desktop computers, and laptops.
It's currently among the top three laptop manufacturers in the
market share, releasing a multitude of productivity, content
creation, and gaming laptops every year. HP also makes many
Chromebooks, offering both budget-friendly and premium
models like the HP Chromebook 14 (2021) and the recent HP
Dragonfly Pro Chromebook.
VI. Lenovo: - Lenovo is a Chinese company and one of the largest
laptop manufacturers in the world. Lenovo's current laptop
lineup is vast and includes popular brands like IdeaPad, Legion,
Yoga, and Think Book. The company is often at the forefront of
new technology and experiments with more unique form
factors and features, like laptops with an e-ink display on the
lid, dual-screen laptops, and ultrawide laptops with a 21:9
display. Lenovo laptops are often among the best value models
you can get, whether you're looking for a cheap Chromebook
or a premium mobile workstation. A source of frustration with
Lenovo is its tendency to give the same product multiple
names, confusing the average consumer.

VII. MSI: - Micro-Star International Co. Ltd., also known as MSI, is

a Taiwanese multinational computer hardware company, that
specializes in the production of laptops, desktops,
motherboards, graphics cards, and other computer
accessories. The company is known for its high-quality gaming
laptops, which are designed for gaming applications. MSI also
produces laptops for business and professional use, as well as
laptops for general consumers. The company's products are
sold in over 160 countries worldwide through a network of
distributors, dealers, and retailers. The company has strong
global presence, particularly in the United States, China, Japan,
and Europe. Additionally, the company conducts extensive
research and development (R&D) activities on eco-friendly
initiatives and programs and promotes energy efficiency in its
manufacturing processes.

VIII. Microsoft: - Microsoft is well-known as the creator of the

Windows operating system. Although it has made computer
peripherals since the 1980s, its Surface line of personal
computers is relatively young, with the first device released
back in 2012. Microsoft has popularized the 2-in-1 tablet form
factor with its Surface Pros, and it often makes devices with
unique features, like the Surface Laptop's Alcantara-covered
keyboard deck and the Surface Book's detachable display.
Microsoft has a fairly small lineup, focusing almost solely on
productivity and media consumption devices. Its laptops are
usually well-built and provide a great user experience, but
they're more expensive than similar models from other brands.

IX. Samsung: - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is a South Korean

multinational electronics company and a major player in the
global laptop market, offering a wide range of laptops designed
for different user needs. The company's laptops are known for
their reliability, durability, and performance, making them a
popular choice among consumers and businesses worldwide.
Powered by Intel or AMD processors, Samsung laptops run
Microsoft Windows operating system and come in a variety of
sizes, from ultra-thin and light laptops to large-screen gaming
computers. The company portfolio also includes 2-in-1 laptops
that can serve as both laptops and tablets. A variety of price
points are available for Samsung's laptops, making them
affordable for a larger consumer base. The company has a
global presence, with its laptops being sold in more than 80
countries worldwide. Samsung also has a strong distribution
network and partnerships with leading retailers and online
marketplaces, thereby making its laptops easily accessible to
consumers.

Advantages of Laptop
1. Mobility: The main advantage of a laptop, as compared with a
stationary computer, is its mobility. The lightweight, compact
size, the built-in battery within the laptop allowing it to simply
move from one place to a different one. Many models are often
worn in the least times, utilized in a park, cafe, or carted during
a car.

2. Finished product: The laptop is straightforward to use without

any additional devices. It’s everything like its own keyboard,
built-in mouse (touchpad), built-in speakers, built-in
microphone, many laptops have a built-in camera.

3. Internet access: Internet access is the second advantage for the

increase in demand for the laptop because it provides the
power to access the web through wireless technology Wi-Fi.

4. Offline operation: The laptop is additionally convenient to use

for all types of presentations. In this case, you are doing not
dependent upon the technical equipment of the venue. As the
laptop can work offline from its battery so no need to connect
from the mains.

5. Instant: Usually carrying a laptop means your ticket to instant

access to information, be it personal or professional. It results
in better collaboration between co-workers or students.

Disadvantages of Laptop
1. Frequent Upgrades: The laptops are difficult to upgrade thanks
to their integrated design. The sole parts which will be
upgraded are hard disc and memory as these are the sole parts
that are accessible to the user. It’s very difficult to repair it. As
every laptop has its own proprietary design and construction,
they’re difficult to upgrade. Additionally, they need a high
maintenance cost too.

2. Higher price: The laptops are costly as compared to PC, because

the smaller components required by the laptop come costly.

3. Difficulty in customization: The laptop doesn’t offer an option

for personalization consistent with one’s requirements. The
laptop only gives access to the computer’s memory and disk
drive. The opposite components like processors, graphics cards,
and cooling systems aren’t easy to access and replace. So, when
one among the laptop’s non-customization components
becomes obsolete then you’ll need to buy a replacement laptop
to stay up with the technology.

4. Highly insecure: The laptops are generally stolen thanks to their

heavy cost. The thieves may misuse the stolen business data or
personal data which will convince be very dangerous. Hence,
both the physical protection of laptops and the safeguarding of
knowledge are very important.

5. Health issues: Prolonged use of laptops can cause RSI thanks to

their flat keyboard and trackpad pointing devices. The
integrated screen of the laptop often causes the users to hunch
for a far better view than can cause neck or spinal injuries.
6. Durability: Thanks to their high portability laptops are subject
to more wear and tear. Laptop components like screen hinges,
latches, and power jacks are susceptible to deteriorate
gradually thanks to ordinary use.

7. Video Cards: It is easier to run as many video cards as possible

on a desktop at a time, but laptops have a lot of limitations
when it comes to the use of video cards because laptops are
not compatible with the consumption of high power and may
lead to permanent damage.

Conclusion
In conclusion, laptops have both advantages and
disadvantages. While they offer mobility, convenience, and
instant access to information, they also have limitations such
as expense, difficulty of upgrading, security risks, health risks,
and limited power etc.
