1. PURPOSE:

The purpose of this plan is to describe & define the Investigation of Geotechnical nature of soil in
order to find the safe bearing capacity of determined area. This procedure deals with site
investigation for the proposed project for the purpose of assessing the suitability of the site for the
project and of acquiring knowledge of the characteristics of the site that affect the design and
construction of such work and security of neighboring land and property.

2. SCOPE:
The scope of works comprises of the following:
 Collecting information and maps particular to the project such as public services, Site plan and
land-use map.
 Collecting information about present land use, surface topography, geological Features, and
surface drainage.
 Drilling of boreholes as provided in the tender specifications to the required depths and at specified
locations and performing standard penetration tests at specified Intervals / coring in rock strata.
 Performing necessary laboratory tests on the samples. Performing engineering analysis of field and
laboratory samples.
 Developing conclusions and recommendations for foundation design and Construction.

3. RESOURSES:

A. Manpower

 Construction Manager
 Site Supervisor
 APR
 Safety officer
 Technician
 Skilled Helper
 Equipment operators

B. Materials

4. CONSTRUCTION STAGE:
Positioning Equipment:
 The mobile drilling rig will be positioned at the boring and assisted by a bank man/assistant.
 Once in operating position movement will be prevented by application of the braking system.
 The drilling tower will be placed in the upright position in preparation for drilling.
 A check of rotating equipment will be undertaking before starting operations.

Methods of drilling:
 Drilling shall be carried out under the supervision of an experienced Engineer by the following
methods appropriate to meet the nature of the works and existing soil strata, and with the
Engineer’s approval.
 Rotary Drilling with Coring.
 The rotary drilling shall be carried out using a truck mounted rotary rig. In rotary drilling, the
borehole is advanced by rotary action of a drill bit attached at the end of hollow drill rods.
 The drilling fluid which is pumped down to the bit through the hollow drill rods lubricates the bit
and flushes the drill debris up the borehole.
 The drilling fluid used is betonies.
 In sandy strata, standard penetration test shall be carried out at regular intervals.

 Rotary coring is carried out once rock is encountered.

 Rotary coring consists of cutting a cylinder of rock using a rotating double tube core barrel type
with a coring bit attached to the bottom of outer barrel. The drilling fluid is used to cool the drill bit,
remove the cuttings, and flush them up the borehole outside the core barrel.
 The cores shall be wrapped in polythene bags to prevent loss of moisture, placed in core boxes in
the sequence of depths and transported to the laboratory for testing.

Field tests and sampling.

 The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is a widely used in-situ test method for determining the
geotechnical properties of soils. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has
established standard procedures and guidelines for conducting the SPT, which are outlined in
ASTM Standard D1586.
 Test Setup: The SPT involves driving a split-barrel sampler into the ground using a drop hammer.
The sampler consists of a steel tube split into two halves, and it is driven into the ground at the
bottom of a borehole using a standard hammer with a weight of 140 pounds (63.5 kg) and a free
fall of 30 inches (762 mm).
 Borehole Preparation: Prior to conducting the SPT, a borehole is typically drilled to the desired
depth using rotary drilling or other methods. The borehole is cleaned to remove any loose
materials, and a casing may be used to prevent cave-ins or soil disturbance.
 Test Procedure: The SPT involves driving the split-barrel sampler into the ground in increments of
6 inches (150 mm) using the drop hammer. The number of hammer blows required to drive the
sampler for the first 12 inches (305 mm) is not recorded, as this section is considered seating. The
number of blows required for the subsequent 6- inch increments, known as the "standard
penetration resistance" or "N-value," is recorded.
 Sampling and Sample Recovery: After the desired depth is reached or refusal is encountered, the
split-barrel sampler is extracted from the ground. The soil sample within the sampler is carefully
removed, preserved, and sent for laboratory testing, if necessary.
 Documentation: The SPT test results are typically recorded in a field log or report.
 The recorded data includes the depth intervals, number of blows for each 6-inch increment, and
any additional observations such as soil type, groundwater level, or other relevant information.
Correction of SPT Value:
Based on field observations, it appears reasonable to standardize the field SPT number as a
function of the input driving energy and its dissipation around the sampler around the surrounding
soil. The variations in testing procedures may be at least partially compensated by converting the
measured N (30) to N1 (60) according to “DD ENV 1997-3” as follows:
N1 (60) = CN × CB × CV × CS × CR × N30
CN = Effective Unit Weight Correction. CB = Borehole Diameter Correction.
CV = Rod Factor Correction.
CR & CS = Energy ratio & Liner Correction.
