Construction Methods
Construction Methods
1. Site Preparation
Safety Precautions:
o Ensure all workers have personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, gloves, harnesses, and non-slip shoes.
o Set up scaffolding, ladders, and safety barriers around the house to prevent accidents.
o Clear the area of any obstructions or movable items such as vehicles, plants, or outdoor furniture.
o If necessary, install temporary weather protection such as tarps to cover exposed areas.
Material Delivery & Storage:
o Ensure the roofing materials, tools, and equipment are delivered to the site ahead of time and stored in a safe, dry
location.
o Organize materials close to the working area for easy access but away from the construction zone to avoid damage.
2. Roof Removal
Stripping the Old Roof:
o Start by removing the existing roof covering (e.g., shingles, tiles, etc.), using appropriate tools such as roofing
shovels or pry bars.
o Remove nails or fasteners and ensure all old materials are properly disposed of. Recycling of old materials, where
possible, should be encouraged.
o If required, inspect and remove old flashing, gutters, and vents.
Inspect the Roof Deck:
o After stripping the old roof, inspect the underlying roof deck (wood sheathing or plywood) for any signs of rot,
mold, or structural damage.
o Replace any damaged sections of the roof deck with new, suitable materials.
3. Roof Preparation
Install Underlayment:
o Lay a waterproof underlayment (felt paper or synthetic membrane) over the roof deck to protect it from moisture
and ice. Ensure proper overlap between sheets for full coverage.
o Secure the underlayment with nails or staples, ensuring that it is smooth and wrinkle-free.
Install Drip Edge:
o Install metal drip edges along the eaves and rakes of the roof to prevent water from seeping under the edges of the
roof.
1. Start at the bottom edge (eave) of the roof and work your way up.
2. Nail the shingles in place according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring correct overlap and
staggered joints for proper water flow.
3. Continue installing shingles row by row, ensuring alignment and proper nailing patterns to avoid wind
uplift.
o For Metal Roofing:
1. Align the metal panels starting from the bottom edge, ensuring they are square with the roof line.
2. Fasten the panels securely with screws, and ensure overlap between adjacent panels.
3. Install ridge caps and flashing to seal the joints between metal panels.
o For Tile Roofing:
1. Begin by installing battens (wood or metal) on the roof deck to secure the tiles.
2. Lay the tiles starting from the bottom edge and moving upward, securing each with fasteners or adhesive
where necessary.
3. Ensure tiles are uniformly spaced and fit tightly to avoid leaks.
Install Flashing:
o Flashing should be installed around roof penetrations (chimneys, vents, skylights) and in valleys to prevent water
infiltration.
Install Ridge Caps:
o Place ridge caps along the peaks of the roof to protect the seams and allow for proper ventilation.
5. Ventilation Installation
Roof Vents:
o Install ridge vents, soffit vents, or other ventilation systems to allow airflow and prevent moisture buildup in the
attic.
