Summerofseacreatures SEAHORSE
The seahorse is worked from the end of its nose to the tip of its tail in the round. Short rows give
the seahorse its shape, and knitting on the wrong side while doing short rows instead of purling
gives him his banded look. The seahorse gets a bit fiddly at times, but stick with it, and you’ll be
pleased with the result.
Materials:
1 set of 4 size US 3/3.25mm double pointed knitting needles
35 yds of Scheepjes Stone Washed in Coral, or comparable sport weight yar
1 set of size 6mm black acrylic safety eyes (available through www.6060eyes.com)
Polyester fiberfill stuffing
Yarn needle
Finished measurements:
7” tall when worked in sport weight yarn on size 3 needles
Abbreviations:
K: Knit
CO: Cast on
P: Purl
Kfb: Knit through both the front and back loops of a single stitch to increase by one
M1: Make one new stitch by picking up the bar before the next stitch and knitting into it
K2tog: Knit the next two stitches together to decrease by one
W&t: “wrap and turn,” slip the next stitch as if to knit (on the wrong side, slip as if to purl), but
instead wrap the working yarn around the stitch, place it back on the other needle, and turn
work
Notes:
I did not include instructions on when to stuff the seahorse in the knitting directions. Because
the body is so long and skinny, if you wait too long to stuff it, it will be lumpy and out of shape.
Keep a bag of stuffing near you while knitting, and every few rows, add a pinch to the seahorse
so that you can stuff him as you go.
Directions:
CO 4. Distribute over dpns and begin to work in the round.

Make sure the body is fully stuffed and
redistribute the stitches over just two of your double pointed needles. There should be 5 stitches
each on two needles, held parallel to each other. The rounds should begin and end at the
middle of the seahorse’s belly.

Cut yarn, use yarn needle to thread through remaining stitches Pull tight, tie off, and conceal
end inside tail.
Back fin:
If each purl ridge divides the seahorse into a section, your seahorse should have 17 sections.
Starting at the nose, count your sections- stop when you get to 9. You should be at the part of
the lower belly. Along the seahorse’s back, in section 9, pick up and knit 5 sts. Turn work.
