Approach Road Design for Substations

1. Introduction
Approach roads in a substation are essential for safe and efficient movement of personnel,
equipment, and heavy machinery. Proper design ensures durability, ease of maintenance, and
compliance with industry standards.

2. Road Width and Pavement Type

 The width of the approach road shall be 3.75 meters.
 The pavement type shall be bituminous (flexible pavement), designed for heavy loads.
 Proper camber and drainage slopes shall be provided to prevent water accumulation.

3. Road Drainage System

 A 100 mm diameter uPVC pipe, encased with 75 mm thick concrete (1:2:4 mix), shall
be provided below the Water Bound Macadam (WBM) layer.
 These drainage pipes shall be installed at every 100-meter interval along the road to
ensure proper water drainage and prevent damage to the pavement structure.

4. Road Shoulders
 All roads within the switchyard area, including approach roads, roads leading to the
control room building, and roads outside the switchyard fence, shall have earthen
shoulders.
 Each shoulder shall be 600 mm wide on both sides of the road to provide additional
support and stability.

5. Road Layout and Turning Radius

 Roads leading towards the Autotransformer/Reactor area shall be as short as possible
to minimize material usage and optimize access.
 Road layouts shall be prepared with an adequate turning radius to facilitate the smooth
movement of vehicles, including heavy transport trucks.
 Roads designated for carrying transformers/reactors shall have a preferred turning radius
of 19.5 meters to accommodate large vehicles safely.

6. Structural Considerations
 The pavement shall consist of multiple layers, including:
o Subgrade layer: Well-compacted soil or granular material.
o Base course: WBM or wet-mix macadam.
o Bituminous surface: Asphaltic concrete with adequate thickness for load-
bearing.
 Load-bearing capacity shall be designed to withstand substation transport vehicles.

7. Safety and Signage

 Proper road markings and reflective signboards shall be installed.
 Speed limits and cautionary signs shall be placed near sharp turns and load-sensitive
areas.
 Safety barriers or bollards shall be used at critical locations.

8. Conclusion
A well-designed approach road enhances operational efficiency and ensures safe transport within
the substation. Following these specifications ensures durability, compliance, and ease of
maintenance.
