10 Problems of ULAB That Are Needed to Be Solved 2
BUS305-1
Problems:
1. Dust: The area inside the campus is always filled with dust, and whenever wind
is present, it causes the campus to get dirty and eventually it reaches the
classrooms.
2. Transportation: The location of the campus makes it difficult for a lot of students
to travel there. Especially for those who depend on the public transportation
system. The road itself is unsafe as buses and rickshaws do not maintain lanes
and many students were robbed or mugged. And the road is always dusty. This
is not healthy for students travelling on Public Buses and Rickshaws as they are
exposed to dust. ULAB’s shuttle buses are usually full, hence a lot of students
have to opt for public transport.
3. Lack of Study zones / Quiet zones and Recreational Zones: Due to the
recent increase in students, most places are always crowded. This makes
studying challenging. People used to study in the canteen but now it is always full
of students spending recreational time with each other waiting for classes. The
library is also always full during exam times. Students seek quiet places for
studying and also places where they can do recreational activities. The location
of the campus makes it impossible for students to go out to other places between
classes hence they have to spend time in over crowded areas.
4. Uncomfortable Chairs in Classroom: The chairs provided in most classrooms
are not designed for comfort and are very cramped which causes fatigue for
students who are of average height and size or greater. The table spaces are
also insufficient for regular copies let alone books or laptops
5. Poor Quality Food and low capacity in Canteen: The canteen serves food that
appears unappetizing, lacks taste and is priced very high for the portion provided.
The food is often dry or stale. The seating capacity is also very low which makes
it difficult for students to have lunch or snacks between classes.
6. Inadequate WiFi systems: The wifi in campus is usually overloaded as the
capacity is very low in terms of number of users. It is technically unusable as
students do not get adequate bandwidth or sometimes cannot connect due to the
overload.
7. No Shed in Parking Area: The lack of shades in the parking area damages the
vehicles’ interiors and exterior due to long heat exposures under direct sunlight
8. Echo in Classrooms Of New Building: The lack of sound insulating materials
in the new classrooms make it difficult to listen to lectures.
9. Lack of Smart Classroom Equipment: In the era of automation and paperless
movements, we are still using outdated classroom equipment and formats.
10. Classroom Speakers Lack Volume: The new classrooms are very large,
however the speakers provided are not loud enough to fill the room. More
powerful speakers are required as when Teachers want to show videos, students
cannot hear the audio. The echoing nature of the rooms do not help in this matter
either.
Solutions:
1. Plants and greenery around the campus will act as a barrier for dust. Planting
grass on empty ground will keep the dust contained and also moisturize dust to
prevent them from flying around.
2. Paid shuttle services for students who live in areas further than dhanmondi. This
will lower their dependence on using personal transport and public transports.
The number of cars on the roads will also decrease. And not using public
transport in this area will make travelling safer for students from Mugging and
Assault on the roads.
3. More areas for students to study and to do recreational and productive activities
Ex: Quiet Zones, Group Study Zones, Gyms, Etc.
5. More vendors and canteen areas. This will cause competition between vendors
and they will be bound to improve food quality and portions. The seating capacity
can be increased by opening more canteens which will allow room for more
vendors as well.
6. High Capacity Wifi Routers designed for public use will solve this issue.
7. Well designed sheds that will not only protect vehicles from heat exposure but
will also allow enough ventilation.
8. Sound insulating materials on walls (soft boards, curtains, foam padded walls,
blinds on windows).
9. Modern classroom tools that allow wireless display sharing making presentations
easier for both faculties and students. The classroom PCs will not be clogged
with files as well if this is implemented.
10. Loud “PA” speakers that are designed for addressing large audiences will solve
this issue as the speakers used currently are small home/office use speakers.
