symbols. It’s like a language where you work with variables (like xxx, yyy, or zzz) and constants
(like numbers 1, 2, 3, etc.) to solve problems. Instead of just working with numbers, algebra
allows you to express relationships, patterns, and equations in a more generalized way.
1. Variables: These are symbols (often letters like xxx, yyy, or aaa) that represent unknown
or variable quantities. For example, in the equation x+5=10x + 5 = 10x+5=10, xxx is a
variable.
2. Constants: These are numbers that do not change. In the equation x+5=10x + 5 =
10x+5=10, the 5 and 10 are constants.
3. Expressions: Algebraic expressions are combinations of variables, constants, and
mathematical operations (like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). For
example, 2x+32x + 32x+3 is an expression.
4. Equations: An equation is a mathematical sentence that says two expressions are equal.
For example, 2x+3=72x + 3 = 72x+3=7 is an equation. You can solve equations to find
the value of the variable.
5. Solving for a variable: This is the process of finding the value of the variable that makes
the equation true. For example, to solve the equation 2x+3=72x + 3 = 72x+3=7:
o Subtract 3 from both sides: 2x=42x = 42x=4
o Divide both sides by 2: x=2x = 2x=2
6. Operations in Algebra:
o Addition and Subtraction: Combine like terms, such as 3x+5x=8x3x + 5x =
8x3x+5x=8x.
o Multiplication and Division: These are used to manipulate equations and
expressions, like (2x)(3)=6x(2x)(3) = 6x(2x)(3)=6x.
