Manufacturing Driver Drowsiness Detection System

Using the Design Thinking Process

1. Introduction
Driver drowsiness is a major cause of road accidents worldwide. Detecting and preventing
drowsiness can save lives. The Design Thinking process provides a user-centered approach
to developing a robust drowsiness detection system. This report follows the five stages of
Design Thinking to create an effective solution.

2. Empathize & Define

Understanding user needs is crucial. Research on driver fatigue reveals that
prolonged driving, irregular sleep, and night shifts contribute to drowsiness.
Key challenges include real-time detection accuracy, false positives, and usability
in different lighting and driving conditions.

3. Ideate & Prototype

Possible solutions include:
- Camera-based eye-tracking systems using AI to detect eye closure and yawning.
- Sensor-based solutions measuring heart rate and steering patterns.
- Wearable devices alerting drivers through vibrations or alarms.
A prototype combining AI-powered facial recognition and IR sensors is developed
for testing under various conditions.

4. Test & Implement

Testing is performed in different environments (day/night, highway/city).
The system is refined to minimize false alarms and improve reaction time.
Final implementation involves integrating it with vehicle alert systems
to ensure immediate driver notification.

Conclusion
Using Design Thinking, we developed a driver drowsiness detection system
that prioritizes user needs and real-world usability. Further improvements include
cloud integration for data analysis and machine learning refinement.
