In Critical Path Method (CPM), you encounter different types of "float" or "slack", including total

float, free float, independent float, and project float. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Here's a breakdown: [2, 5, 6, 7]

● Total Float (Total Slack): This is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without
delaying the overall project completion date. [2, 5, 6, 7, 8]
○ It's the difference between the latest finish time (LF) and the earliest finish time (EF)
or the latest start time (LS) and the earliest start time (ES). [7, 9]
○ Formula: Total Float = LF - EF or LS - ES. [7, 9]

● Free Float (Free Slack): This is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without
delaying any succeeding activity on the schedule or their early start. [3, 5, 6]
○ It's the difference between the earliest start of its successor and the earliest finish of
the activity. [3, 5]
○ Formula: Free Float = Lowest ES of successors – EF [9]

● Independent Float: This is the amount of time that one activity can be delayed without
affecting the early start times of any other activity, either preceding or succeeding it. [3, 8,
10, 11]
● Project Float: This refers to the total amount of time an entire project can be delayed
without impacting the company or client. [4]
● Negative Float (Negative Slack): Occurs when an activity's early finish time is later than
its late finish time, indicating a project delay. [12, 13]
● Zero Float: When there is no time between activities, such activities are considered
critical. [14]
