SYNOPSIS
Introduction to topic
The Bada Imambara, an architectural marvel located in Lucknow, India, stands as a
testament to the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region. Constructed in the
late 18th century under the patronage of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, the fourth Nawab of
Awadh, this grand structure was built primarily as a means to provide employment to
the local populace during a time of famine. Beyond its philanthropic origins, the
Bada Imambara is celebrated for its intricate design, stunning architecture, and its
significance as a center of religious and cultural activities.

The complex is renowned for its impressive central hall, which is one of the largest
arched constructions without support beams in the world. Measuring about 50 meters
long and 15 meters high, this remarkable space showcases the ingenuity of Mughal
architecture, reflecting both grandeur and an understanding of structural mechanics
that was ahead of its time. The hall is complemented by a series of beautifully
decorated rooms and passages, including a maze-like section that has captured the
imaginations of visitors for centuries. This labyrinth was intentionally designed to
confuse intruders and protect the Nawab’s treasures, demonstrating a blend of art and
practicality.

The Bada Imambara complex also includes the impressive Shahi Baoli, a stepwell
that not only served as a water reservoir but also as a cool refuge during the scorching
summers of Lucknow. Visitors are often enchanted by the Baoli’s intricate carvings
and the serene atmosphere it provides. The adjacent mosque, known as the Asfi
Mosque, adds to the spiritual aura of the place, with its elegant minarets and
expansive courtyard inviting both worshippers and tourists alike.
Literature review
Based on the provided information, it appears that writers have described Bada
Imambara in Lucknow as a magnificent 18th- century hall with a maze of nearly a
thousand interconnected passages. The structure was built as a major famine relief
project by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784.
One writer notes that Awadh's nawabs, hailing from Nishapur in Iran, left a lasting
impact on Lucknow through their art, culture, architecture, and Shi'ite religious
traditions. Another writer highlights the imambara's grandeur, describing its exterior
façade as monumental in scale and offering views of the city from multiple levels.
During the festival of Muharram, the Bara Imambara comes alive as believers
assemble and take out taziyas, or movable shrines. This event is described as a
testament to the imambara's architectural opulence.
Several writers, historians, and travelogues have highlighted the significance of the
Bada Imambara in Lucknow, each bringing their unique perspective to its
architectural and cultural importance. Here are some notable mentions:

1. Siddiqi, Iqbal - In his writings on Awadh and its history, Siddiqi often
references the Bada Imambara as a pivotal site, detailing its architectural
features and historical context.

2. Ghulam Nabi Khayal - This local historian has explored the Nawabi era and its
contributions to Lucknow's culture, frequently mentioning the Bada Imambara in
his works.

3. William Dalrymple - In his travel writings, Dalrymple has touched upon

Lucknow's rich heritage, including the Bada Imambara, highlighting its grandeur
and historical significance.

4. Annie Besant - In her observations during her time in India, Besant noted the
architectural beauty of the Bada Imambara, emphasizing its cultural relevance.

5. Vikram Seth - In his poetry and prose, Seth often draws inspiration from
Indian landmarks, including the Bada Imambara, celebrating its historical
essence.
6. Arvind Adiga - Although primarily known for fiction, Adiga has referenced
various Indian historical sites, including the Bada Imambara, in his explorations of
Indian society.

7. Local Folklore and Histories - Many local authors and storytellers have
documented the legends and stories surrounding the Bada Imambara, enriching its
narrative through oral traditions.
