Learning Update
School Message
This Learning Update represents a final summary of your child’s learning to date in semester 1. In addition to
descriptive feedback regarding your child’s proficiency in relation to learning standards, your child will have had
opportunities to reflect on and self-assess their learning in relation to the Core Competencies of Communication,
Thinking, and Personal and Social. We encourage you to have a conversation with your child about their learning
and the goals to focus on as next steps that will develop their learning in the year ahead. We thank you for
working with us to support your child’s growth at school.
This Learning Update may include some courses that your son/daughter is taking online through a school other
than Palmer Secondary. Please contact the online school directly if you have any questions.
Any questions about this Learning Update should be directed to the classroom teacher. Email addresses are listed
on our website.
NOTE: Please print or save this MyEd Learning Update as it will only be available for 2 weeks in your MyEd
account.
This semester, our class has completed a grammar unit, a short story unit, a history unit on the European Early
Middle Ages, and a novel study unit. Stephanie is a quiet, hardworking student who gets along with her peers. She
has displayed proficiency in both English and Social Studies. Stephanie can continue to improve by speaking more
often during class discussion as she usually has the right answer. Looking forward to another productive
semester!

Stephanie has made remarkable progress this semester. She has accumulated a sizeable vocabulary and she is
able to use the affirmative, negative and question forms in spoken and written French. Stephanie demonstrates a
solid understanding of grammar concepts masculine/feminine & singular/plural. She can conjugate regular -er
verbs and the irregular verbs avoir, être, aller and faire, using them in complete sentences. Stephanie can
accurately describe her daily school routine, including the time for each class, with an opinion about them using
"parce que" + adjectives. Finally, Stephanie displayed considerable effort and talent in her illustrated poster
assignments.Thank you for your active listening and enthusiastic speaking participation! I wish you all the best in
your future language studies!
After building computational fluency and flexibility in number sense during the first half of our semester, students
continued to focus on exploring, analyzing, and applying mathematical ideas. They developed their mathematical
understanding throughout inquiry, and problem solving practice. Our topics covered in the 2nd of semester were
1. Using discrete linear relationships to identify and make generalizations. 2. Identifying and using surface area
and volume of 3D objects to describe, measure, and compare spatial relationships. 3. Using a central tendency to
make sense of large data sets, to further apply mathematical ideas in our real world. They also learned to use
technology to explore and create patterns and relationships, and test conjectures.
Throughout the whole semester, students have been given the Canoe project, Waffle projects, Balloon project,
and Lake Fish project to connect abstract math concepts to real-life applications. Students are able to gain insight
of how math applies to their surrounding living environment.
Stephanie is attentive in class and very well prepared before coming to class. She started with relatively weak
basic math foundation skills, which prevented her from quickly grasping math concepts.
Stephanie is motivated to learn and completes her homework on time.
Stephanie has been given a second chance to rewrite the final exam, as she claimed she messed up the questions
and answers.
When solving word problems, it is strongly recommended that Stephanie clearly list the given conditions and the
question, try to create a clear logic flow chart, and develop word problem-solving skills to prepare for Math 9 in
the next school year.

games, and fitness activities. Overall a proficient effort and attitude has been demonstrated in all activities this
semester.
