3. What is safe state?
A "safe state" often refers to the state in which a system can guarantee progress or completion

such a way that the system will not enter a deadlock.
4. Define demand paging.
Demand paging is a memory management technique used in operating systems to optimize
the use of physical memory (RAM) by loading only the necessary portions of a program into
memory when they are actually needed. Instead of loading the entire program into memory at
the start, demand paging brings in specific pages of the program into RAM only when they
are requested by the executing process.
5. What is Belady’s Anomaly.
Belady's Anomaly, also known as Belady's anomaly or the FIFO anomaly, is a phenomenon

3. What is a deadlock? What are the necessary conditions which can lead to a deadlock in
a system?

resource. In other words, it's a state where a set of processes are blocked because each
process is holding a resource and waiting for another resource acquired by some other
process.

There are four necessary conditions for a deadlock to occur, known as the Coffman
conditions, named after computer scientist Edward G. Coffman, Jr. These conditions are:
1. Mutual Exclusion: At least one resource must be held in a non-shareable mode,
meaning only one process can use the resource at a time.

2. Hold and Wait: A process must be holding at least one resource and waiting to
acquire additional resources held by other processes.

3. No Preemption: Resources cannot be forcibly taken away from a process; they must
be released voluntarily by the process holding them.

4. Circular Wait: There must be a circular chain of two or more processes, each waiting
for a resource held by the next one in the chain. This creates a cycle of dependencies.

3.B. What is semaphore? Explain its use in Critical section problem.

A semaphore is a synchronization construct in computer science, particularly in concurrent


programming, that is used to control access to a shared resource by multiple processes or
threads. It was introduced by Edsger Dijkstra in 1965 as a way to address the critical section
problem.

The critical section problem arises in concurrent systems when multiple processes or threads
share a common resource, such as a variable or a piece of memory, and there is a possibility
of interference if these processes or threads access the shared resource simultaneously. The
goal is to ensure that only one process or thread can execute its critical section (the part of the
code that accesses the shared resource) at a time, to avoid conflicts and maintain data
consistency.

Semaphores come in two types: binary semaphores (also known as mutexes) and counting
semaphores.

1. Binary Semaphores (Mutex):

 A binary semaphore has two states: 0 and 1.

 It is typically used to implement mutual exclusion, allowing only one process


or thread to enter a critical section at a time.

 The basic operations on a binary semaphore are wait (P) and signal (V).

 The wait operation decreases the semaphore value by 1, and if the result is
negative, it blocks the process until the value becomes non-negative.

 The signal operation increases the semaphore value by 1, releasing a waiting


process if there is one.

2. Counting Semaphores:

 A counting semaphore can have an integer value greater than or equal to zero.
 It is used to control access to a resource with multiple instances or to limit the
number of processes or threads that can access the critical section
concurrently.

 The wait operation decreases the semaphore value, and if the result is
negative, it blocks the process until the value becomes non-negative.

 The signal operation increases the semaphore value, possibly unblocking a


waiting process.

In the context of the critical section problem, a semaphore is often used to protect the shared
resource. Before entering the critical section, a process or thread must perform a wait
operation on the semaphore. After leaving the critical section, it performs a signal operation
to release the semaphore, allowing other processes or threads to enter.

4.Write a difference between internal fragmentation and external fragmentation?


Internal fragmentation and external fragmentation are two concepts related to memory
management in computer systems, particularly in the context of memory allocation
for processes or programs.
1. Internal Fragmentation:
 Definition: Internal fragmentation occurs when memory is allocated to a

Page 2, Logical Page 1 is mapped to Physical Page 1, and so on.
4. Accessing Memory:
 When the CPU generates a memory address, the operating system uses the
page table to find the corresponding physical address.
 For example, if the CPU wants to access data at Logical Address 10, it
consults the page table to determine that Logical Page 2 is mapped to Physical
Page 3. Therefore, the actual physical address would be 3 * 4 KB + offset of
Logical Address 10 within the page.
5A. Explain the methods for handling disk scheduling and their impact on
system performance.
Disk scheduling is a crucial aspect of operating system design that manages the order
in which input/output (I/O) requests from various processes are serviced by a disk
