When does the author become bias?
Concepts
An author becomes bias when he or she persuades the reader to believe
and on his/her own stand of the issue by giving inaccurate information or false
Practicing impression even with or without the intention of misleading the reader.
New Skills
#1

IV.
PROCEDURE
S
E. Discussing Recognizing Bias
New 1. Look for loaded words- words that are charged with emotion
Concepts (whether positive or negative) can reveal an author’s opinion about
and his/her topic.
Practicing Emotional Biases
New Skills  Stem from impulse or intuition and tend to result from reasoning
#2 influenced by feelings
 Are harder to correct for because they are based on feelings ,
which can be difficult to change.
2. Watch out for stereotypes- if an author labels an entire group, the
writing is probably biased.
Examples:
 Black people to be more violent and to engage more in crimes
than the white people.
 People with tattoos are troublemaker and bad people
 Politician are all corrupt
 People with white complexion are kinder and more intelligent
and more capable than those with darker complexion.
3. Notice vague language or generalizations- if the author isn’t
using specific language this could be an indicator of bias.

Example:

Biased: Educators do not consider each child‘s particular learning style

when developing lessons.
This sentence does not acknowledge the variation within the
population of educators, implying that all educators are like this.

Better: Some educators do not consider each child’s particular learning

style when developing lessons.
This sentence acknowledges that there are some educators who
do not fall into this category, that all educators are not the same
.
4. Be on the look out for one-sided arguments- if the author
presents one side of an argument, his/her writing is probably biased.
Example:
Biased: My daughter texts constantly, which shows that teenagers use
cellphones more than they did in the past.
This statement makes an assumption about all teenagers by
just basing it on the author’s own personal experience. While personal
experiences are sometimes helpful, use them as supporting examples,
rather than the sole basis for assertions.
Better: Teenager’s use of cell phones, specifically for texting, has
increased 33% in the last 2 years (McDonald, 2011).
This sentence presents the same assertion, but uses specific
statistical data to support the idea. Rather than basing this statement on
one teenager’s behavior, it uses a study that surveyed a larger sample
of teenagers.

5. Does the author presents facts or opinion?

Facts are what they are- the truth. But opinion can be based on
feelings, emotions, or prejudices, which aren’t objective.

F. Pairing:
Developing Activity: Am I positive or negative .
Mastery Directions: Read the paragraph below. Identify the sentences

New Skills and direct observations, scientific and legal findings, and
#1 anecdotes and philosophical evidences.

Diction refers to the words or expressions that help convey the

stand of the author towards an issue. These words and
expressions may indicate a positive or negative connotation or
meaning.

The table below shows an example of a word with a positive and a

negative connotation.

Here are some guide questions to check the author’s use of evidence.

 Does the author present more positive evidences to support one side of
an issue?

 Does the author present more negative evidences to disprove one side
of an issue?

Here are some guide questions to check the author’s diction.

 Does the author use more positive words and expressions to present
one side of an issue?

 Does the author use more negative words and expressions to present
one side of an issue?

Let’s use the guide questions above when we read and examine the
paragraph below:
For the evidences:

Based on the table above, you will notice that the author has presented
more positive evidences of going to the beach than going to the
mountain.

You will also notice that there is an unfair presentation of the evidences.
The author emphasized the dangers on going to the mountain but failed
to present the dangers on going to the beach like drowning.

For the diction:

The author used more positive words such as highlighting the benefits of
going to the beach, but he/she used negative words when referring to
going to the mountain such as dangerous and danger. These words give a
negative impression to the readers making the author biased as he/she
was favoring one idea over the other. He/she also failed to present both
advantages and disadvantages about going to the beach and going to the
mountain in a more balanced and objective way.

I like soda better than juice. I prefer soda because
