(b) Explain with neat sketch the working of hydraulic braking system.
Force applied on brake pedal is transmitted to brake shoes for its actuation through a
confined liquid known as brake fluid'.
Usually the brake fluid is a mixture of Glycerin and Alcohol or Castor oil, Dehydrated
Alcohol and some additives.
The hydraulic brake fluid should possess the following characteristics:
1. It should not soften the rubber parts used in hydraulic
2. It should not corrode metallic parts used in system.
3. It should not vaporize easily.
4. It should retain flow at lower temperature.
5. It should help for lubrication.
6. It should not loose its characteristics easily.
7. It should be non-compressible.
The Hydraulic Braking system consists of –
1. Master cylinder 2. Wheel cylinder 3. Brake drum
4. Break Shoe 5. Break Fluid with Break Lines
The master cylinder is connected by tubing to wheel cylinder at each of four wheels.
The system is filled with brake fluid under light pressure when brakes are not in operation.
Each wheel consists of a brake drum, which is mounted on inner side of the wheel and
revolves with it.
Two brake shoes are mounted inside the brake drum, which does not rotate.
The brake shoes are fitted with heat and wear resisting brake lining on their surface.
The brake pedal is connected to the master cylinder piston by means of piston rod.
For application of brake, the driver presses the brake pedal, which moves the piston in
master cylinder, increasing pressure of fluid in master cylinder and in entire hydraulic
system.
This pressure is instantly transferred to all four wheel cylinders.
Piston in wheel cylinder moves outwards moving brake shoes against brake drum to
apply brakes.
When driver releases the brake pedal, the master cylinder piston returns to its original
position due to return spring, dropping fluid pressure.
Brake shoe retracting spring pulls the brake shoes from brake drum to their original
position and brakes are released.
(c) Explain the construction & working of single plate clutch with diagram.
Construction :
•The part of single plate clutch shown in Fig.
•It consist of flywheel, pressure plate, clutch plate with friction
lining/faces called friction plate, clutch pedal, thrust and ball
bearing and clutch springs.
•It has only one clutch plate, mounted on the hub which is
splined internally and free to slides over the clutch shaft.
•Flywheel is mounted on the crankshaft and rotates with it.
•The pressure plate is fixed to the flywheel through clutch
spring by means of bolts.
•The springs are arranged circumferentially to provide axial
force on pressure plate to keep the clutch in engage position as
shown in Fig.
•The friction plate held between flywheel and pressure plate
having friction facing on both side to provide two annular
friction surfaces for power transmission.
•When clutch pedal is pressed the pressure plate is moved to the right against the spring this is
achieved by means of suitable linkage and thrust bearing.
•Due to this movement of the pressure plate, the friction plate is released and clutch is disengaged and
when pedal is released the pressure plate moves to left due to clutch spring arranged circumferentially
and thus clutch again engaged
(d) Enlist various types of vehicle layouts and explain all wheel drive type.
•The vehicle based upon type of drive used are;
To increase the manoeuvrability and to make it able to move on rough roads 4WD is provided.
•All 4 wheels are driven thus entire weight of the vehicle available for traction.
•Good of hill climb if one wheel skids then other wheels will provide the traction.
•Steering is hard as compared to others.
Advantages of 4WD
•Traction is doubled.
•Handling characteristics can be configured.
•Good for rough roads.
Disadvantages of 4WD
•Manufacturing cost is high.
•More components and complicated transmission.
•Increased fuel consumption
