It is 400 miles from London to Glasgow in Scotland. The plane journey takes just over an hour, going by car or
bus takes seven hours, and the train takes four and a half hours. But which is the most eco-friendly way?
The evidence shows that you should get on a bus. Even an electric car is not as good for the environment as a
bus or a train. Trains and buses are very similar in how much they hurt the environment. Normal cars produce
three times the amount of CO2 that trains and buses do. Planes are very, very bad for the environment. The
London to Glasgow plane journey is five times worse for the environment than the bus journey.
Public transport is much better for the environment than private transport, so why don’t more people use it?
Firstly, these ways of travelling are not as comfortable. It’s also difficult to use public transport if you have
large, heavy suitcases. And people use cars a lot because public transport is often not reliable. Finally, bus or
train services are often not frequent enough to be convenient.
Public transport has to get a lot better before people will start to leave their cars at home, or even sell them!

It is 400 miles from London to Glasgow in Scotland. The plane journey takes just over an hour, going by car or
bus takes seven hours, and the train takes four and a half hours. But which is the most eco-friendly way?
The evidence shows that you should get on a bus. Even an electric car is not as good for the environment as a
bus or a train. Trains and buses are very similar in how much they hurt the environment. Normal cars produce

three times the amount of CO2 that trains and buses do. Planes are very, very bad for the environment. The
London to Glasgow plane journey is five times worse for the environment than the bus journey.
Public transport is much better for the environment than private transport, so why don’t more people use it?
Firstly, these ways of travelling are not as comfortable. It’s also difficult to use public transport if you have
large, heavy suitcases. And people use cars a lot because public transport is often not reliable. Finally, bus or
train services are often not frequent enough to be convenient.
Public transport has to get a lot better before people will start to leave their cars at home, or even sell them!
