Present Simple Tense.

Use:

Permanent or long-lasting situations


Where do you work? The store opens at 9 o'clock. She lives in New York.
Regular habits and daily routines
I usually get up at 7 o'clock. She doesn't often go to the cinema.
Facts
The Earth revolves around the Sun. Water doesn't boil at 100ºC in Mendoza.
Feelings- Opinions and states of mind
I love walking around late at night. She hates flying! I think he is a wonderful student.
Timetables and schedules
The plane leaves at 4 p.m. The train doesn't arrive until 10.35.

Structures:

affirmative negative interrogative answers


I/you/we/they I play. I do not play. Do I play? Yes, …… do
No, …don’t
he/she/it He plays He does not play. Does he play? Yes, ……. does
No, ……. doesn’t

Time expressions related to the Simple Present:


 Every day/afternoon/ night/week/month/year
 Once/twice a week/a month/ a year;
 three/four/five times a week/a month/ a year

Adverbs frequency:

Always, usually, often, sometimes, almost never, never

Adverbs of frequency answer the question: How often...?

How often do you get to work on time? I never/sometimes get on time.

How often does you boss get angry with you? He usually/never gets angry with me.

Position of Adverbs frequency:

 Before main verbs: I always have lunch at work.


 Between auxiliary and verb: I don’t usually sleep late on Saturdays.
 After the verb ‘to be’: I am never late.

Some useful linkers to talk about daily routines

first, then, after (that), finally, in the end

Example:
In the morning, I wake up at 7am. First, I get up and clean my teeth. Then I have a bath. After that
I have breakfast. I generally drink some coffee and milk with toasts. Finally, I go to school at 8.
