Unintentional Injury prevention, Safety and First Aid

QUARTER 3 - Unintentional Injury prevention, Safety and First Aid

First Aid is an immediate and temporary care given to a person who suddenly becomes ill or injured.

Objectives of First Aid:


To save lives, to alleviate suffering, and to prevent further injury.

Characteristics of a Good First Aider:


Gentle, Observant, Resourceful, Tactful, and Sympathetic

Common Unintentional injuries:

Fracture - a break or crack in a bone.


First Aid:
1. Check the vital signs.
2. Do not move the injured part.
3. Stop bleeding if there is any.
4. Apply a cold compress to reduce pain, immobilize the broken part by splinting.
5. Seek medical help immediately.

Dislocation - a displacement of the bones.


First Aid:
1. Call for help immediately.
2. Splint the affected part.
3. Do not try to move a dislocated part or force it back into place.
4. Apply a cold compress in the injured part to reduce swelling.

Wound - a break in the continuity of a tissue in the body. It may be closed in which there is no break
or damage in the skin. It is called hematoma or contusion. A wound may also be open wound in
which there is a break in the skin.

Kinds of Open Wounds:


1. Puncture - piercing wound caused by pointed objects.
2. Abrasion - caused by rubbing or scraping the skin against a rough surface.
3. Incision - a cut caused by a sharp object.
4. Laceration - a blunt breaking or tearing of soft tissues usually from mishandling tools and other
accidents.
5. Avulsion - a forcible tearing or partial tearing away of tissues.

First Aid for Close Wound: RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate)

First Aid for Open Wound:


1. Wear gloves and remove or cut clothing as necessary to expose the wound.
2. Control bleeding by applying direct pressure.
3. Elevate the injured part above the heart except for eye injury and wounds with embedded objects.
4. Cover wound with sterile dressing and bandage.
5. Care for shock.
6. Consult a physician immediately.

Written work and Performance task:

1. Why is First Aid important?


2. Can we help others through our knowledge and skills in first aid? How?

3. Write the proper first aid procedure for Sprain and strain, food poisoning, heat exhaustion,
drowning, and burns.
