COMPOSITION DU 1er SEMESTRE 2024-2025

Text: Senegal Launches its First Satellite

Senegal has achieved an important milestone* by launching its first satellite, GAINDESAT-1A.
The project started in 2019 and the satellite was sent into space on August 16, 2024, from the
Vandenberg Space Base in California, USA. This success is the result of five years of hard work by
Senegalese engineers in partnership with the University Space Centre of Montpellier in France.
5 The satellite is small but very useful. It will collect important data to help Senegal manage its
water resources better, predict the weather more accurately, and improve aviation safety. It will also
assist in taking care of lakes and rivers across the country. By using this satellite, Senegal can rely
more on its own resources to solve these issues and make progress in science and technology.
The Senegalese president expressed his pride in this achievement. He said the satellite marks a
10 big step for Senegal in gaining more control over its technology. He thanked all the engineers and
technicians who worked hard to make this dream a reality. This launch shows how determined
Senegal is to use advanced technology to solve its problems and improve its people’s lives.
Other African countries have also made progress in technology. For example, Nigeria launched its
first satellite (NigeriaSat-1) in 2003, which helps with communication and disaster management.
15 South Africa is known for its Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project, one of the world’s largest
astronomy projects. Rwanda launched its first satellite, RwaSat-1, in 2019 to improve internet access
in rural areas. These achievements show that Africa is becoming more active in using technology to
support development and innovation.
The GAINDESAT-1A launch places Senegal among the growing number of African countries
20 using space technology. The country plans to continue using this technology to support its
development and help its people. This success also shows the world what Senegal can achieve when
it invests in science, innovation, and teamwork. It is a bright step toward a stronger future.
